In this study, we investigated the perceptions of elementary school teachers on the use of analogy generation in scientifically-gifted education. The relationships among the perceptions and the self-perception as teacher for scientifically-gifted students were also investigated. A survey was administered to 119 elementary school teachers, and in-depth interviews with some teachers were conducted. The results revealed that the teachers had a relatively good understanding of the advantages/disadvantages of analogy generation in cognitive, affective, and learning environmental aspects. Their perceptions on the usability of analogy generation and their willingness to practice of it in scientifically-gifted education was also positive. They highly perceived on the various factors related to effective uses of it in scientifically-gifted education. Their self-perception as teacher for scientifically-gifted students was comparatively low, and significantly related with the perceptions on the advantages of it, the usability, the practical methods to use, and the various factors related to effective uses in scientifically-gifted education. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kindergarten and elementary school teachers' perception on the gifted children and the education for the gifted and the talented. One hundred and fifteen kindergarten teachers and 116 elementary school teachers participated in this study as subjects. Teachers perceptions on the gifted children were generally right, except the relationships between the giftedness and birth order, the domain-specificity of the creativity, and the physical growth, sense of humor, and the socio-economic status of the gifted children. Since 1998, an elementary teacher education institute in Korea has hosted the center for the gifted education. The institute hired undergraduate students to escort and liaison each class of the gifted student participants with assisting classroom activities. These liaison teachers observed the gifted classroom activities and evaluated them by using a given checklist and filling out pre-made evaluation forms. Currently this system is being transferred from part-time jobs for students to earn allowance into well organized pre-service teacher program focusing on the gifted education. In other words, the purpose of system is being shifted from how liaison teachers facilitate the gifted program to how the system helps the liaison teachers to be quality teachers for the gifted who can understand what the gifted are and how to facilitate them. Analyzed were the self reports of the liaison teachers regarding their perceptions and beliefs of the gifted and their education program. It was found participant liaison teachers purposed to have more live experiences with getting along with students as well. Liaison teachers’ perceptions on establishing a gifted teacher professional education sequence were reported in this study. The potential scaffolding of the pre-service teacher education program model of the gifted education was provided as a consequence of this study.
The purpose of this study was to examine the status and science teachers' perceptions of classes for those gifted in science in elementary school. For this purpose, a number of questions were posed to teachers : 27-item-questionnaires were given to 38 teachers of students gifted in science in elementary schools located in Incheon province. The results of this study were as follows : 1. most elementary teachers were in charge of classes containing students gifted in science, but this was the case with only a few secondary teachers. Therefore, it appears to be more necessary to educate elementary teachers who majored in science content and gifted education. 2. In addition, most teachers had positive perceptions of the needs, attitudes and environments needed for gifted education. Most of them attended 60-hour training programs on gifted education. They thought that it was helpful in understanding the characteristics of gifted students, but they wanted to learn more about actual pedagogical methods through such programs. 3. The teaching methods used in classes for those gifted in science were mainly experimental activities, but there were few opportunities for creative problem solving and project learning. This may be due to limited class time of about one hour every two weeks in this class. 4. When the materials used in class were first developed, they mainly used materials made by the city board of education and selected the theme of interest by themselves. Therefore, there may be problems of duplication of materials or systems regarding the science contents for one year. 5. Furthermore, the themes of the materials used were mostly related in terms of the contents of textbooks than more generally. When planning and managing the classes for those gifted in science, the above points should be considered in order to improve the education of those students gifted in science.

This study compares the perceptions of elementary gifted child and science teacher in a science class for the gifted. In order to explore the research problem, students and teachers answered a written semi-structured questionnaire and participated in interviews regarding the gifted science class. The data was collected and analyzed. Science teachers recognized the characteristics of a good science class, especially in terms of educational content and teaching methodology. First, they suggested promoting inquiry skills, presenting a challenging task in atypical topic selection, student-centered curriculum, and controlling the pace of learning to recognize individual differences. Second, in terms of the science class skills and attitudes category, teachers recommended raising mutual satisfaction through vigorous interaction within a permissible atmosphere. Finally, science teachers need to strive for continued professional growth. Gifted children, meanwhile, want to investigate a wide range of topics without time constraints. Additionally, they may have to explore challenging topics further. They prefer to act like scientists in that they enjoy group activities, communication and cooperation. In particular, they want to be evaluated by others in a totally embedded assessment. Gifted children also expect teachers to understand the life circumstances and needs of the students. In addition, they asked for teachers to respect individual experiments and to show them how to safely use new equipment or research methods. As a result, gifted children and science teachers have to recognize the differences of opinion concerning a good science class for the gifted. This study can help formulate strategies to establish quality management of materials in gifted science classes.
This research examined to seek managing the way of effectiveness for training through the teachers' perceptions and the current status of in-service training for the gifted in arts. Conclusions based on the results of the analysis are as follow. First, it is analyzed that about 49.4 percent of respondents do not have any experiences of in-service training related to the gifted education in arts and there are also teachers who teach with no experiences of in-service training. Moreover, it is also analyzed that in-service training is generally being conducted with revolving to basic courses and the opportunities that teachers are able to develop programs for themselves are offered insufficiently. Second, in terms of management of in-service training, it is implied that accessibility to the training site and the active promotion of program, as well as sufficient provision of information, have to be considered in advance. Third, teachers have recognition that it is important to secure the diversification of training types, professionalism of instructors and managing directors for the effectiveness of in-service training. Forth, in terms of program, teachers show that the provision of educational programs, the diversification of training contents and the differentiated opportunities for developing programs according to basic, advanced courses, which can be applied to the field of gifted education in arts are most important. Furthermore, the convenience of transportation and the amenity of training facility are said to be important elements. Therefore, we suggest that, for increasing the effectiveness of in-service training for teachers of the gifted in arts, not only differentiated in-service training model and curriculum which can be applicable to the field, but also efficient environment suitable for the characteristics of the gifted education in arts.
