  • The purpose of this study was to offer suggestions for students, teachers, and parents, respectively, to develop effective gifted education programs in Korea by examining the programs from Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth (PTY) at Tennessee in the USA. The method is based on the analyses of PTY web pages, recent materials on programs from PTY, interviews with the executive director of PTY, participation in the endorsement program, and observation in SAVY(Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young) program. In order to improve gifted education programs in Korea, the results indicate as follows: in respect to students, early identification and education, interdisciplinary humanities curriculums, integrated curriculum models, and information of individual learning plans are essential; in regards to teachers, tailored gifted teacher programs and gifted endorsement programs are necessary; in consideration of parents, programs for supporting parents' groups with professional gifted educators are indispensible.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of STS by science gifted and talented students. A multiple-choice format questionnaire HS-VOSTS was administered to 134 science gifted and talented students. We found that most of students had possessed the tentativeness of scientific knowledge. Science gifted and talented students mainly agreed that government should not control scientists' researches. Science gifted and talented students emphasized that scientists should consider the positive and negative influences of research products. There was no significant difference according to the gender in the view of science gifted and talented students on the definition of science, the external and internal sociology of science, and epistemology. This study would provide implication for the development of gifted students' program and curriculum.

  • Since the Gifted and Talented Education Promotion Law was enacted 15 years ago, in Korea, gifted education in Korea has continued rapid and quantitative growth. The number of gifted classes or institutes for the gifted have increased, as well as the number of gifted education teachers increasing their participation in professional development training and educational activities. However after 2014, gifted education is somewhat shrinking. Due to the controversy of private education and expansion of social welfare in Korea, administrative and financial support for gifted education is being reduced. This study reviewed the gifted education policies promoted by successive governments and analyzed the relationship between politics and support for gifted education efforts by the government. In addition, the phenomenon of the recently shrinking gifted education in Korean society was analyzed in various aspects. These aspects include: decreasing quantitative growth due to the weakening of administrative and financial support from central and local governments on gifted education, regulations on suppressing private education, social inequality to gifted education access, and lack of solidarity in the gifted education scholastic community. Based on this analysis of gifted phenomenon, ways of developing the ideological and practical aspects of future-oriented gifted education were suggested. In the ideological dimension, it was emphasized that gifted education must move away from insularity and the adhesive perspective of Korean society on the concept of giftedness, the concept of intelligence and the recognition of the legitimacy of gifted education. On the other hand, in the practical dimension, the following points were identified: the collection of empirical data on the economic impact of gifted education, gifted education amendment of the statutes, adaptation of the gifted education program with gifted identification, diversification of gifted education service system, and actively promoting new research topics in relation to the Gifted and Talented Education.

  • The gifted Education has been grown up a lot although it has several problems in terms of the quality of the gifted education programs after legislated the Promotion of Education for the Gifted and Talented Law during the last ten-year period. So the purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' perceptions of the national standards gifted education program and the problems in managing of the gifted education program. The conclusions according to the analysis are as follows. First, it has analyzed that gifted teachers recognize the lack of teaching and learning materials, regional level difference of the gifted children, Redundancy of program in the grade and school levels in managing of the gifted education as the problems. Second, it was found that perception of most gifted teachers about necessity of the National Standards Gifted Education Program development was very positive. Also, it has shown that gifted teachers expect the education with the overlapped contents and teaching methods would be managed differently, the difficulty of the topic selection could be resolved, and the quality of the gifted education by the programs development of various aspects would be increased. Especially, gifted teachers expect that the problem from the lack of gifted education continuity of school levels could be resolved by development of the National Standards Gifted Education Program. Therefore, for the improving quality of gifted education with resolving the problem from the Contents Redundancy and the lack of gifted education continuity of school levels, the national standards gifted education program should be studied developed as soon as possible.

  • The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over. Types of the tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving task. Also levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be divided into the level of lower than grade 5, level of grade 6, and level of more than grade 7. Three tasks developed and practiced are reported in this article.

  • This study compared levels of mathematically talented students' statistical thinking with those of non-talented students in statistical modeling and sampling distribution understanding. t tests were conducted to test for statistically significant differences between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. In case of statistical modeling, for both of elementary and middle school graders, the t tests show that there is a statistically significant difference between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. Table of frequencies of each level, however, shows that levels of mathematically gifted students' thinking were not distributed at the high levels but were overlapped with those of non-gifted students. A similar tendency is also present in sampling distribution understanding. These results are thought-provoking results in statistics instruction for mathematically talented students.
