  • The purpose of this study was to compare the 5 OEs of Korean gifted elementary students and non-gifted and to find out the gender difference in gifted and non-gifted to clarify the best predictor of giftedness in gender group. The total subjects of this study were 372 Korean third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary school children. One hundred sixty six children of them belonged to a gifted group, and 206 were non-gifted group. Two hundreds one out of 372 subjects were boys and 171 were girls. The Overexcitability Questionnaire II(OEQII) used in this study was developed by Falk, Lind, Miller, Piechowski, & Silverman in 1999. The OEQ II is consisted of 50 Likert-type items, classified into five subscale: psychomotor, sensual, imaginational, intellectual, and emotional. And it was translated into Korean. It was administered in group sessions during the winter of 2008. Data were analyzed with SPSSWin 12.0. MANOVA was conducted to determine statistical differences by giftedness and by gender. The results revealed that the level of 5 OEs of gifted elementary children was higher than non-gifted(normal) children. The intellectual OE showed the most powerful explanation among the 5 forms of OEs. This study also found the gender difference within the gifted group as well as with the whole subjects. The mean scores of sensual, imaginational and emotional OEs were higher in girls than in boys. Based on the gender difference within the gifted group and the whole group, it is assumed that imaginational OE may be the best predictor of gifted girls among school-age children.

  • This study aimed to assess whether the gender of the dental practitioner affects operative techniques in class 2 and class 5 resin composite restorations. In 2008, a nationwide survey was given to Korean dentists. Total 12,193 e-mails were distributed, 2,632 were opened by recipients, and 840 responses were collected. Of the respondents, 78.9% were male and 21.1% were female. The gender distribution in the age groups between respondents and the total population did not differ (p > 0.05). A chi-square test was used to compare technical differences between female and male dentists. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between gender and operative techniques in resin composite restoration. For class 2 resin composite restoration, female dentists were 1.87 times more likely than male dentists to do multiple incremental fillings (four layers or more) and 2.72 times more likely than males to spend 30 minutes or more for the treatment (p < 0.05). For class 5 resin composite restoration, female dentists were 2.69 times more likely than their male counterparts to use a cavity base or liner, 1.83 times more likely to do multiple incremental fillings (four layers or more) and 1.63 times more likely to spend 20 minutes or more for the procedure (p < 0.05). The gender factor was influential to individual operative techniques in restorative treatment.

  • The purpose of the study is 1) to investigate the reciprocal relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms and 2) to examine whether there is gender difference in this mutual relationship. The uniqueness of the current study is in its investigation on the simultaneous reciprocal relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms, which is different from previous studies examining unidirectional relationship. Subjects were 3,511 individuals aged 65 and over who participated in the first and second wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Non-recursive structural equation modeling identified the reciprocal relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms, with poorer cognitive functioning leading to higher depressive symptoms and higher depressive symptoms resulting in poorer cognitive functioning. Multi-group analysis showed the gender difference in the relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms. Specifically, cognitive functioning was the significant predictor of depressive symptoms for females, whereas the depressive symptoms was the significant predictor of cognitive functioning for males. These findings indicate that the reciprocal relationship and gender difference should be considered when we development practice implications for prevention and treatment related to depression and cognitive functioning. Based on these findings, implications for theory and practice were discussed.

  • Objectives Alcohol is metabolized to acetaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme in the liver and then acetaldehyde is metabolized to acetone by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) in the liver. There are two main ALDH enzymes which metabolize the acetaldehyde produced during ethanol oxidation. In particular, in the presence of the ALDH2 1*2 allele, the activity of the ALDH 2 enzyme is lowered. As a result, acetaldehyde metabolism is slowed down and acetaldehyde accumulates in the body compared to the ALDH2 1*1 allele. There are many studies that have investigated the blood acetaldehyde concentration according to the ALDH2 genotype, but there are few studies to compare this with age. So we investigated the blood acetaldehyde concentration according to ALDH2 genotype, age and gender. Methods According to the ALDH2 genotype, we divided the group by gender and age. We divided the age group in to three groups which ranged from 20 to 34 years old, from 35 to 49 years old, and lastly from 50 to 64 years old. And then we collected blood samples after 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 2 hr, 3 hr, 4 hr, 5 hr and 15 hr of after drinking to measure the blood acetaldehyde concentration. Results In ALDH2 1*2 allele group, there are significant differences of the blood acetaldehyde concentration between the age groups. In ALDH2 1*2 allele and male group, there are significant differences of the blood acetaldehyde concentration between the age groups. Conclusions There are significant differences of the blood acetaldehyde concentration between the age groups according to ALDH2 genotype. Also, there are significant differences of the blood acetaldehyde concentration between the age groups with male gender and ALDH2 1*2 allele. Studies about other factors that may influence the blood acetaldehyde concentration are needed.

  • This secondary analysis study used the 2015 Korea Health Panel data to identify the difference of factors affecting the quality of life (QoL) of Korean adults with diabetes mellitus (DM). The data from 1,343 subjects who met the criteria for screening was analyzed by multiple linear regression and quantile regression analyses. As a result, the average QoL of the subjects was .86 (±.14). The factors affecting the QoL of the subjects were age, gender, education level, spouse, economic activity, type of health insurance, and regular physical activity (all p<.05). However, there were differences of the results when dividing the subjects into three groups according to their QoL level. The factors for the lower 25% group were age, gender, education level, spouse, economic activity, type of health insurance, and regular physical activity, and those factors for the middle 50% group were age, gender, education level, spouse, type of health insurance, and regular physical activity, and those factors for the top 75% group were spouse, economic activity, household income, type of health insurance, and duration of DM. Based on these results, it is important to develop and provide a differentiated intervention strategy that considers the influential factors in order to improve the QoL of Korean adults with DM.

  • Although technological advances have allowed the efficient collection of large amounts of microbiome data for microbiological studies, proper analysis tools for such big data are still lacking. Additionally, analyses of microbial communities using poor databases can lead to misleading results. Hence, this study aimed to design an appropriate method for the analysis of big microbial databases. Bacteria were collected from the fingertips and personal belongings (mobile phones and laptop keyboards) of individuals. The genomic DNA was extracted from these bacteria and subjected to next-generation sequencing by targeting the 16S rRNA gene. The accuracy of the bacterial matching percentage between the fingertips and personal belongings was verified using a formula and an environment-related and human-related database. To design appropriate analysis, the bacterial matching accuracy was calculated based on the following three categories: comparison between qualitative and quantitative analysis, comparisons within same-gender participants as well as all participants regardless of gender, and comparison between the use of a human-related bacterial database (hDB) and environment-related bacterial database (eDB). The results showed that qualitative analysis, comparisons within same-gender participants, and the use of hDB provided relatively accurate results. This study provides an analytical method to obtain accurate results when conducting studies involving big microbiological data using human-derived microorganisms.

  • Objectives: This study is to research delay time comparison for later defibrillation after hands off according to the changes in defibrillation electrodes. Study purpose: In defibrillation treatment that is the only way for cardiac arrest by arrhythmia, it is to find defibrillator device which can minimize late defibrillation delay time after important affect of hands off. Study object and method: After hands off according to the defibrillator device, we collected total 40 people for emergency medicine doctor, internal medicine doctor, general surgeon, nurse, emergency medical technician who are working at 2 CN, CS University hospitals in Gwangju Jeollanamdo district to find out hand off shock interval(HOSI). We then researched their general properties like occupation sector, experiences in clinic, gender, completion of AHA ACLS-P training and more. Then 40 participants continued ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest simulation training (using human-model mannequin) designed by researcher and performed their roles as defibrillation operator. Each of participant used manual paddle and performed 4 times of defibrillation (150J) during 8 minutes of CPR and in 8day, the defibrillator devices were replaced from manual paddle to self-adhesive electrodes pads and 4 times of defibrillation (150J) under same simulation condition as manual paddle were performed. Study result: In comparison for delay time of later defibrillation after hands off of manual paddle and self adhesive electrodes pad, the self adhesive electrodes pad ($7.0{\pm}0.5sec$) seemed to reduce delay time of later defibrillation significantly (p<0.05) compared to manual paddle ($10.0{\pm}0.9sec$). The self adhesive electrodes pad, according to the general properties of participants, had no particular change in delay time after later defibrillation for the statistics (p>0.05) but the manual paddle had statistically significant differences for the occupation sector, experiences in clinic and gender (p<0.05). Conclusion: In defibrillation, the self adhesive electrodes pad($7.0{\pm}0.5sec$) showed short HOSI compared to manual paddle ($10.0{\pm}0.9sec$) significantly (p<0.05) and it applied identically for both existence and non-existence of ACLS-P training completion, experiences in clinic, gender and occupation sector. The manual paddle had also significant difference in experiences in clinic and occupation sector (p<0.05). which means the effect on HOSI according to the job mastery. Therefore, if the clinic experience is short or in case for the occupations without frequent defibrillation treatment has a danger of lowering success rate for the defibrillation using manual paddle. Therefore, it is true that using self adhesive electrodes pad for defibrillation electrodes when performing manual defibrillation in pre-hospital as well as in-hospital steps can generally minimize delay time of later defibrillation after hands off.

  • The main purpose of this comparative study is to analyze the impact of uncertainty avoidance on the potential entrepreneurship of five developing countries through results of survey implemented to under- and postgraduate students of five developing countries such as Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal, Peru and Rwanda. Futhermore, it is another purpose to compare the results of respondents by gender and scrutinize what impacts of the uncertainty avoidance have on male and female students' entrepreneurial orientation. First of all, the survey was conducted to under- and postgraduate students of five countries. Questions of the survey were composed of three parts: Locus of Control and Innovativeness for the individual entrepreneurial orientation and Uncertainty Avoidance for the cultural variable. The result of this study shows that the variable of entrepreneurial orientation is getting higher when Uncertainty Avoidance variable is becoming higher. On top of that, this is shown even in the gender comparison. It is the totally different result from precedent studies that shows correlation of entrepreneurship and culture. On the other hand, men's entrepreneurial orientation of five countries higher than women's according to the gender comparison.
