Characteristics of transfer responses for arrays like triangle, hexagon and semicircle were investigated. To characterize the site near Izmit city with ambient noise measurement, dispersion curves of surface waves were derived with using array technique like F-K, High resolution F-K, MSPAC and H/V ratio was calculated. Also, MASW was surveyed to get the high frequency part of dispersion curves. The transition from fundamental mode to first high mode of surface waves for dispersion curve was observed. Dispersion curve of fundamental mode of ambient noise and first higher mode of MASW was used in inversion to get S-wave velocity structure of subsurface. None-unique problem of results of surface wave inversion was solved with comparison of result of refraction tomography performed with first arrivals of MASW data.

An approximate analysis method is proposed to predict the dynamic amplification of shear forces in ordinary reinforced concrete shear walls as a preliminary study. First, a seismic design for three groups of ordinary reinforced concrete shear walls higher than 60 m was created on the basis of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Causes for the dynamic amplification effect of shear forces were investigated through a detailed evaluation of the nonlinear dynamic analysis result. A new modal combination rule was proposed on the basis of that observation, in which fundamental mode response and combined higher mode response were summed directly. The fundamental mode response was approximated by nonlinear static analysis result, while higher mode response was computed using response spectrum analysis for equivalent linear structural models with the effective stiffness based on the nonlinear dynamic analysis result. The proposed approximate analysis generally predicted vertical distribution of story shear and shear forces of individual walls from the nonlinear dynamic analysis with comparable accuracy.

A new modified command voltage of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter is proposed to control the inverter in overmodulation mode. The third harmonics injected PWM has a extended linear region compared with the sine PWM. But it still has a maximum voltage about 90% compared with the six step inverter. By analyzing the relationship between the modulation index and the peak of the fundamental component of the modified reference voltage, we can settle the problem in over modulation mode without iteration. Then we can increase the maximum fundamental component of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter comparative to six-step inverter continuously in over modulation mode. The simulation results of the inverter-induction motor system shows the validity of this method.
The dispersion and attenuation of Lamb and Leaky Lamb waves propagating in a 1 mm-thick steel plate were investigated. For acquiring a long(or large) range inspection capability, the fundamental symmetric and anti-symmetric wave modes(S0 and A0) over law frequencies were studied. Based on the dispersion curves, as well as pitch-catch and multi-mode simulations, it was shown that the S0 mode over law frequencies is the proper mode to minimize the dispersion and attenuation. In addition, it was shown that the S0 mode couldbe easily distinguished under multi-mode simulation since it has a larger group velocity than the A0 mode.

Particle displacement distributions of the fundamental mode and overtone modes in an energy-frapped single resonator and an energy-trapped double acoustically coupled filter using the thickness shear vibration were calculated. And the effects of the width of a pair of partial electrodes, the width of the gap between two pairs of partial electrodes and the magnitude of the plate back on the displacement distributions of the symmetric vibration mode and anti-symmetric vibration mode of the resonators and the filters were investigated.

The purpose of study is to propose numerical assessment methods of lateral deformation shape under lateral loads for regular high-rise buildings. The normalized 1st mode shape is used to assess lateral deformation shape. The assessment method are mass participation factor, representative value by RMS, the mean value, median of the nomalized 1st mode shape. These methods are able to know a fundamental lateral deformation shape of the building and effects of interactive systems numerically. Generally the characteristics of normalized 1st mode shape for various models coincide with numerical assessment results.
We propose a design and optimization method for a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide using a genetic algorithm. This structure consists of a polymer ridge on top of two layers of substrate and gold film. The thickness, width and refractive index of the ridge are designed to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The modal analysis combined with the effective index method shows that the designed waveguide exhibits a fundamental propagation mode with high mode confinement while ensuring that the propagation loss remains relatively low.
Fundamental period is one of the most critical parameters affecting the seismic design of buildings. In this paper, a very simple approach is presented for estimating the fundamental period of multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures. The basic idea behind this approach is to replace the complicated MDOF system with an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. To realize this equivalence, a procedure for replacing a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) system with an SDOF system, known as a two-to-single (TTS) procedure, is developed first; then, using the TTS procedure successively, an MDOF system is replaced with an equivalent SDOF system. The proposed approach is expressed in terms of mass, stiffness, and number of stories, without mode shape or any other parameters; thus, it is a very simple method. The accuracy of the proposed method is investigated by estimating the fundamental periods of many MDOF models; it is found that the results obtained by the proposed method agree very well with those obtained by eigenvalue analysis.

Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is a method for extracting bases for modal decomposition from the ensemble of dynamic signals. Using the POD method, we analyzed the proper orthogonal modes (POMs) of AFM microcantilevers in dynamic mode operations such as Tapping Mode. The POMs and POVs (proper orthogonal values) were computed through MATLAB simulation for the 5-mode model of the microcantilever. We found that the POV portion of the higher POMs of the tapping microcanilever slightly increased in comparison with no tapping. This implies that the modal energy in the fundamental mode can be transferred to the higher modes during tapping.
In this study, the researchers compared the S-wave velocity structures obtained by two kinds of dispersion curves: phase and group dispersions from a tidal flat located in the SW coast of the Korean peninsula. The ${\tau}-p$ stacking method was used for the phase velocity and two different methods (multiple filtering technique: MFT and continuous wavelet transform: CWT) for the phase velocity. It was difficult to separate higher modes from the fundamental mode phase velocities using the ${\tau}-p$ method, whereas the separation of different modes of group velocity were easily achieved by both MFT and CWT. Of the two methods, CWT was found to be more efficient than MFT. The spatial resolutions for the inversion results of the fundamental mode for both phase and group velocities were good for only a very shallow depth of ${\sim}1.5m$. On the other hand, the spatial resolutions were good up to ${\sim}4m$ when both the fundamental and the 1st higher mode poop velocities obtained by CWT were used for S-wave inversion. This implies that the 1st higher mode Rayleigh waves contain more information on the S-wave velocity in deeper subsurface. The researchers applied the CWT method to obtain the fundamental and the 1st higher mode poop velocities of the S-wave velocity structure of a tidal flat located in SW coast of the Korean peninsula. Thea the S-wave velocity structures were compared with the borehole description of the study area.
