  • The several functional properties of freeze-dried powder of Aloe vera gel was examined as influenced by pre-concentration degrees of the gel solution. As a pre-treatment prior to freeze drying, the gel solution was vacuum-concentrated by three levels (unit: g-water/g-solids) - high (H), 76; medium (M), 119; low (L), 159. In FT-IR spectra, the sample H showed the highest absorbance in the range of 1600-1550 $cm^{-1}$ and 1450-1400 $cm^{-1}$, which corresponded to level of the acetyl group in glucomannan. The sample H of freeze-dried powder was the highest in polysaccharide content, jack bean urease inhibition rate, and FAC (fat adsorption capacity). It could be inferred that the sample H had an effect on Helicobacter pylori inhibition and fat adsorption suppression according to urease inhibition rate and FAC, respectively.

  • This paper searched the affect of Water dropwort and Tumeric on radiation exposure. By experimenting 50 male mouse, ICR type 5 weeks old male 25~30g, 5 mouse was divided in to each group respectively. A : 3 Gy control group, B : 5 Gy control group, C : 3 Gy, FW, D : 5 Gy FW, E : 3 Gy LW, F : 5 Gy LW, G : 3 Gy FT, H : 5 Gy FT, I : 3 Gy LT, J : 5 Gy LT FW : Ate Water dropwort before the radiation exposure. FT : Ate Tumeric before the radiation exposure. LW : Ate Water dropwort after the radiation exposure. LT : Ate Tumeric after the radiation exposure. During the 7 day radiation, Control group (A, B) received physiological saline (500mg/kg/day) in oral administration, LW and LT group (E, F, I, J) respectively received Water dropwort or tumeric (500mg/kg/day) in oral administration after the radiation, FW and FT group (C, D, G, H) respectively received Water dropwort or tumeric (500mg/kg/day) in oral administration before the radiation. As a result, an average leukocyte rate on 5 mouse was 200K/${\mu}L$ on group A. 6.46K/${\mu}L$ on group C which was in normal rate range (1.8-10.7 K/${\mu}L$). An average leukocyte rate was 23.33K/${\mu}L$ on group G. which was not normal rate, but compare to 200K/${\mu}L$, it was closer to normal rate. An average lymphocyte rate was 118.87K/${\mu}L$ on Group A. 1.51K/${\mu}L$ on Group G. which was in normal lymphocyte rate range (0.9-9.3K/${\mu}L$). An average thrombocyte rate was 4000K/${\mu}L$ on Group A. 1107 K/${\mu}L$ on Group C. 2759.6 K/${\mu}L$ on Group G. which was in normal thrombocyte rate range (592-2972 K/${\mu}L$). From this result, it was found that when exposed to radiation, Water dropwort and Tumeric have defensive effect in a preventive level. Also from an animal experiment, it was found that blood corpuscle rate returns to a normal rate. Based on this experiment, diverse research on this field should be conducted.

  • Fission-track (FT) thermochronological records from SE Korean Cretaceous-Paleogene granitic plutons in different fault-bounded blocks reveal contrasting cooling and later thermal histories. Overall cooling patterns are represented by a monotonous (J-shaped) curve in most plutons except some Cretaceous granites retaining a complicated (N-shaped) path due to post-reset re-cooling. Discriminative cooling rates over different temperature ranges can be explained for individual plutons with respect to relative pluton sizes, differences in initial heat loss depending on country rocks, and the presence and proximity of later igneous activity. Even within a single batholith, cooling times for different isotherms were roughly contemporaneous with respect to positions. Insignificant deviations in cooling ages from two different plutons in succession across the Yangsan fault may suggest their contemporaneity before major horizontal fault movement. The extent of later thermal rise recorded locally along the Yangsan and Dongnae fault zones were reached the Apatite Partial Stability Zone ($70-125^{\circ}C$), but did not exceed $200^{\circ}C$. Thermal alteration from fractured zones in the Yangsan-Ulsan fault junction may suggest a thermal reset above $290^{\circ}C$ resulting a complete reset in FT sphene age (31 Ma), caused by a tectonic subsidence in Early Oligocene. A consistency in FT zircon/apatite ages (24 Ma) may imply a sudden rapid cooling over $200-105^{\circ}C$, plausibly related to the abrupt tectonic uplift of the Pohang-Gampo Block including the fault junction in Late Oligocene. A remarkable trend of lower cooling ages for $300-200-100^{\circ}C$ isotherms (i.e., 19% for FT sphene and K-Ar biotite; 20% for FT zircon; 27% for FT apatite) from the east of the Ulsan fault (Pohang-Gampo Block) comparing to the west of the fault may be attributed to retarded cooling times from the Paleogene granites and also reflected by their partially-reduced apatite ages due to later thermal effects.

  • To certify the protective effect of herbal medicine against oxygen free radical-induced myocardiotoxicity, cytotoxicity was measured using MTT, LDH activity and Beating rate assay in the presence of Guaruhaebaekbanha-tang(GHBT) extracts or single constituents of this prescription. Myocardial toxicity was evaluated in neonatal rat myocardiocytes in cultures. In the present study, xanthine oxidase/hypoxanthine(XO/HX) resulted in a decrease in cell viability, increases in LDH activity in culture medium and decreases in beating rate in cultured myocardial cells. In the effect of GHBT extract, it showed the prevention from the XO/HX-induced cardiotoxicity by the increases of cell viability and beating rate as well as the decrease of LDH activity. In the protective effect of Fructus Trichosanthis(FT), Bulbus Allii Macrostemi(BAM) and Rhizoma Pinelliae(RP), all the extracts were significantly effective in the protection of XO/HX-induced cardiotoxocity in cultured myocardial cells by the increase of beating rate as well as th decrease of LDH activity. From these results, they show that XO/HX is cardiotoxic in cultured myocardial cells derived from neonatal rat, and it suggests that GHBT, FT, SAM, RP extracts are positively effective in the blocking in XO/HX-induced cardiotoxicity.

  • A new photochemically bifunctional epoxy and dimethacrylate compounds were synthesized for investigating the photosensitivity under UV irradiation. Photosensitivity of the synthesized chalcone-based compounds was investigated by using UV-visible absorption and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. The result of spectroscopic analysis substantiated that the two chalcone-based compounds have functions of both photocrosslinking and photopolymerization by UV exposure in the presence of photoinitiator. Two kinds of photochemical reactions proceeded competitively during UV exposure. Particularly, we studied the effect of photopolymerization on the rate of photocrosslink due to cycloaddition in the two oligomeric compounds.

  • The kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and water gas shift reactions over a precipitated iron catalyst were studied in a 5 channel fixed-bed reactor. Experimental conditions were changed as follows: synthesis gas $H_2$/CO feed ratios of 0.5~2, reactants flow rate of 60~80 ml/min, and reaction temperature of $255{\sim}275^{\circ}C$ at a constant pressure of 1.5 MPa. The reaction rate of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was calculated from Eley-Rideal mechanism in which the rate-determining step was the formation of the monomer species (methylene) by hydrogenation of associatively adsorbed CO. Whereas water gas shift reaction rate was determined by the formation of a formate intermediate species as the rate-determining step. As a result, the reaction rates of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for the hydrocarbon formation and water gas shift for the $CO_2$ production were in good agreement with the experimental values, respectively. Therefore, the reaction rates ($r_{FT}$, $r_{WGS}$, $-r_{CO}$) derived from the reaction mechanisms showed good agreement both with experimental values and with some kinetic models from literature.

  • This study was focused on analyzing the headway of various types of trailer in Pusan city with the high heavy vehicle rate. Then Passenger Car Equivalent(PCE) was calibrated in order to identify the impact of trailers in the traffic flow at the signalized intersections. To fulfill this goal types of trailer were classified into five categories such as full trailer semi-trailer unloaded semi-trailer semi-trailer loaded with 20ft container and semi-trailer loaded with 40ft container and Passenger Car Equivalents were identified. the Results are as follows: 1) The PCE’s were 2.64, 1.51, 2.09, 2.16 and 2.23 respectively. 2) The saturation flow rate on the signalized intersection was lower than that on the multi-lane highway in the big city of Korea. 3) The start-up delay on the thru lane was similar to the average value in our country but the start-up delay on the left-turn lane was longer than the average value in our country by the impact of container Vehicles.

  • Bio-CaCO3 is a blowout environment-friendly materials for soil improvement and sealing of rock fissures. To evaluate the chemical characteristics, shape, size and productivity of soybean urease induced CaCO3 precipitates (SUICP), experimental studies were conducted via EDS, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, BET, and SEM. Also, the conversion rate of SUICP reaction at different time were determined and analyzed. The Bio-CaCO3 product obtained by SUICP is comprehensively judged as calcite based on the results of EDS, XRD and FT-IR. The SUICP calcite precipitates are detected as spherical or ellipsoidal particles 3-6 ㎛ in diameter with nanoscale pores on their surface, and this morphology is novel. The median secondary particle size d50 is 39-88 ㎛, indicating the agglomeration of the primary calcite particles. The Bio-calcite decomposes at 650-780℃, representing a medium thermal stability. The conversion rate of SUICP reaction can reach 80% in 24h, which is much more efficient than microbially induced CaCO3 precipitation. These results reveal the knowledges of SUICP, and further direct its engineering applications. Moreover, we show an economic channel to obtain porous spherical calcite.

  • Fission track (FT) thermochronological analyses on Mesozoic granites provide new information about cooling and uplift histories in Southeast Korea. Twenty-nine new FT sphene, zircon and apatite ages and seven track length measurements are presented for eleven granite samples. Measured mineral ages against assumed closure temperatures yield cooling rates for each sample. Relatively rapid (7-$15^{\circ}C$/Ma) and simple cooling patterns from the middle Cretaceouss (ca. 90-100 Ma) granites are caused mainly by a high thermal contrast between the intruding magma and country rocks at shallow crustal levels (ca. 1-2.5 km-depths). On the contrary, a slow overall cooling (1-$4^{\circ}C$/Ma) of the Triassic to Jurassic granites (ca. 250-200 Ma), emplaced at deep depths (>>9 km), may mainly depend upon very slow denudation of the overlying crust. The uplift history of the Triassic Yeongdeog Pluton in the Yeongyang Subbasin, west of the Yangsan Fault, is characterized by a relatively rapid uplift (~0.4 mm/a) before the total unroofing of the pluton in the earliest Cretaceous (~140 Ma) followed by a subsidence (~0.2mm/a) during the Hayang Group sedimentation. Stability of original FT zircon ages (156 Ma) and complete erasure of apatite ages suggest a range of 3 to 5.5 km for the basin subsidence. Since 120 Ma up to present, the Yeongyang Subbasin has been slowly uplifted (~0.04 mm/a). The FT age patterns of Jurassic granites both from the northeastern wing of the Ryeongnam Massif and from the northern edge of the Pohang-Kampo Block indicate that the two geologic units have been slowly uplifted with a same mean rate (~0.04 mm/a) since early Cretaceous. Estimates of Cenozoic total uplifts since 100 Ma are different: Ryeongnam Massif (~6 km)=Pohang-Kampo Block (~6 km)>Yeongyang Subbasin(~4 km).

  • Objective: This study conducted a preliminary examination of the effects of three-area laser-assisted zona thinning (LAZT) during the cleavage stage of embryo development on the hatching process in human in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) with subjects of advanced female age or frozen-thawed (FT) embryos. Methods: Eight-cell stage embryos were treated with LAZT in three areas of the zona pellucida at $120^{\circ}$ intervals. The control group was embryos without LAZT. Of the 72 consecutive fresh cycles and the 28 FT embryo transfer cycles, the patients in 55 fresh cycles and 17 FT cycles declined LAZT, and those cycles were defined as the control group. Results: In the fresh cycles, the pregnancy rates were similar in the LAZT and control groups. However, in the FT cycles, the pregnancy rate was significantly higher in the LAZT group than in the control group (45.5% in the LAZT group vs. 23.5% in the control group, p< 0.05). Conclusion: These results show that multi-area LAZT resulted in significantly improved pregnancy outcomes in human 8-cell embryos compared to controls.
