For a sailing ship, the frictional resistance exerted on the hull of ship is due to viscous effect of the fluid flow, which is proportional to the wetted area of the hull and moving speed of ship. This resistance can be reduced through air bubble lubrication to the hull. The traditional way of introducing air to the wetted hull consumes extra energy to retain stability of air layer or bubbles. It leads to lower reduction rate of the net frictional resistance. In the present paper, a novel air bubble lubrication technique proposed by Kumagai et al. (2014), the Winged Air Induction Pipe (WAIP) device with opening hole on the upper surface of the hydrofoil is numerically investigated. This device is able to naturally introduce air to be sandwiched between the wetted hull and water. Propulsion system efficiency can be therefore increased by employing the WAIP device to reduce frictional drag. In order to maximize the device performance and explore the underlying physics, parametric study is carried out numerically. Effects of submerged depth of the hydrofoil and properties of the opening holes on the upper surface of the hydrofoil are investigated. The results show that more holes are favourable to reduce frictional drag. 62.85% can be achieved by applying 4 number of holes.

To prevent the percolation of leachate through the bottom of waste landfills, the liner system of various layers, such as compacted clay, geomembrane, geonet, geotextiles, and geocomposite is designed. Since the friction angle between a geomembrane and other geosynthetics is usually lower than that of the soil alone, the interfaces between soil and geosynthetic or geosynthetic-geosynthetic may become a possible plane of weakness, which leads to potential instability of the system under load of waste at side slopes. In this study, large triaxial tests are carried out with samples of remoulded wastes and direct shear interface friction tests are carried out to understand the frictional properties of geosynthetic-geosynthetic interfaces, which are required for analyzing the safety of side-slope liner systems.

Metal matrix composites had generated a lot of interest in recent times because of significant in specific properties, it was also highlighted as the material of frontier industry because strength, heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant were superiored. In recent years, the study of metal matrix composite has increased by aluminum alloy. The study is based on the tribological properties of AC4CH that is a part of the mechanical property of metal matrix composites. Metal matrix composite that is produced from matrix material AC4CH and reinforcement SiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$ and TiO$_2$ are added to the metal matrix composite fur strength so binding among the whisker can take place. Each metal matrix composite is produced using the squeeze casting method. To test for tribe a pin-on-disk machine and lubricant is used without paraffine 8.2CST at room temperature which is 40$\^{C}$. As the results of this study, the tribological properties of each specimen are more improved than AC4CH. The variation of coefficient resistance is more stable at the AC4CH and TiO$_2$, but the variation rates are higher at the inanimate binder.
In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the stress induced by the volume change of an electrode during charge-discharge processes may often cause the mechanical integrity of the electrode to degrade. Polymer binders with enhanced mechanical properties are preferred for improved mechanical integrity and cycling stability of the electrode. In addition, given that sliding and shearing between the polymer binder and components in the electrode may readily occur, frictional and adhesion characteristics of the polymer binder may play a critical role in the mechanical integrity of the electrode. In this study, frictional and adhesion characteristics of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were investigated using a colloidal probe atomic force microscope. Friction loops were obtained under various normal forces ranging from 0 to 159 nN in air and electrolyte and then the interfacial shear strengths of PAN and PVDF in air were calculated to be $1.4{\pm}0.5$ and $1.3{\pm}0.3MPa$, respectively. The results show that in electrolyte, interfacial shear strength of PAN decreased slightly ($1.2{\pm}0.2MPa$), whereas that of PVDF decreased drastically ($0.06{\pm}0.01MPa$). Decreases in mechanical properties and adhesion in electrolyte may be responsible for the decrease in interfacial shear strength in electrolyte. The findings from this study may be helpful in developing polymer binders to improve the mechanical integrity of electrodes in LIBs.

In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.
The problem of determining the discharge rates of gases from pressurized vessels through pressure relief devices was dealt with comprehensively. First, starting from basic fluid flow equations, detailed modeling procedures were presented for isentropic nozzle flows and frictional flows in a pipe, respectively. Meanwhile, physical explanations were given to choking phenomena in terms of the acoustic velocity, elucidating the widespread use of Mach numbers in gas flow models. Frictional flows in a pipe were classified into adiabatic, isothermal, and general flows according to the heat transfer situation around the pipe, but the adiabatic flow model was recommended suitable for gas discharge through pressure relief devices. Next, for the isentropic nozzle flow followed by adiabatic frictional flow in the pipe, two equations were established for two unknowns that consist of the Mach numbers at the inlet and outlet of the pipe, respectively. The relationship among the ratio of downstream reservoir pressure to upstream pressure, mass flux, and total frictional loss coefficient was shown in various forms of MATLAB 2-D plot, 3-D surface plot and contour plot. Then, the profiles of gas properties and velocity in the pipe section were traced. A method to quantify the relationship among the pressure head, velocity head, and total friction loss was presented, and was used in inferring that the rapid increase in gas velocity in the region approaching the choked flow at the pipe outlet is attributed to the conversion of internal energy to kinetic energy. Finally, the Levenspiel chart reproduced in this work was compared with the Lapple chart used in API 521 Standatd.
This study investigates the sound properties of fabric frictional sound (SPL, ${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}f$) according to the film type of PTFE laminated vapor-permeable water-repellent fabrics in order to understand the relationship between SPL and the basic properties of fabrics such as layer, yarn type, and thickness of fiber. This study accesses their mechanical properties and determines how to control them to minimize SPL. Eight PTFE laminated water-repellent fabrics, composed of four different film types (A, B, C, D) and with two different fabrics, were used as test specimens. Frictional sounds generated at 1.21m/s were recorded by using a fabric sound generator and SPLs were analyzed through Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The mechanical properties of fabrics were measured by KES-FB. The SPL value was lowest at 74.4dB in film type A and highest as 85.5dB in type D. Based on ANOVA and post-hoc test, specimens were classified into less Loud Group (A, B) and Loud Group (C, D). It was shown that SPL was lower when 2 layer (instead of 3 layer), filament yarn than staple, and thin fiber than thick were used. In Group I, shearing properties (G, 2HG5), geometrical roughness (SMD), compressional properties (LC, RC) and weight (W) showed high correlation with SPL however, elongation (EM) and shear stiffness (G) did with SPL in Group II.

The demand for PU coated synthetic leather is increasing as a high fashion material. But it has some faults of water vapor permeability surface tacky property and static electricity. Therefore the purpose of this study was the produce of PU coated fabric added collagen with hydrophilic property and soft touch. In the PU coated fabric water vapor permeability water vaper absorption and frictional electronic voltage were investigated surface bending and compression properties were also examined by the use of KES-FB System. The followings were the results of this study. 1. There was no Cr in the collagen so that Cr was not treated in the collagen. 2. The surface and cross sectional layer of PU coated fabric with collagen were highly developed by micro porous structure. 3. The water vapor permeability of PU coated fabric was increased as collagen concentration increased. 4. The water vapor absorption of PU coated fabric was increased as collagen concentration increased. 5. The frictional electronic voltage of PU coated fabric was decreased in accordance with the increase of collagen concentration. Especially it effectively decreased by the use of only 5% collagen concentration. 6,. The bending and compression properties of PU coated fabric were increased in accordance with the increase of collagen concentration so that it became stiff. 7. The Value of MIU, SMD was decreased in accordance with the increase of collagen concentration so that the PU coated fabric became smooth.

Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.
The sliding contact interface of machine components such as bearings, gears frequently operates in lubrication at the inception of sliding failure under high loads, speed and slip. The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. Most surface failure in sliding contact region result from frictional heat generation. However, it is difficult to measure temperature rise experimentally. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. The surface temperature rise is related in contact pressure, sliding speed, material properties and lubrication thickness. Though roughness, load, ect all of the condition, are same, film thickness varies with velocity. In this study, surface temperature rise due to frictional heating in lubrication is calculated with various velocities. Surface film shearing and dry solid asperity contact are used to simulate the change of frictional heat in lubricated contact
