In this paper, vibration and flow-induced flutter instability analysis of cantilever multiwall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Non-classical effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extend Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Cantilevered carbon nanotubes are damped with decaying amplitude for flow velocity below a certain critical value, however, beyond this critical flow velocity, flutter instability may occur. Variations of critical flow velocity with both radius ratio and length of carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

This paper deals with the dynamic stability and vibration of a discontinuous cantilevered Pipe conveying fluid. The present model consists of two segments with different cross-sections. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The critical flow velocities and stability maps of the pipe are obtained by changing ratios of second area moment of inertia and mass ratios. Finally, the vibrational modes associated with flutter are shown graphically.

In this study, the effect of planform curvature on the stability of coupled flow/structure vibration is examined in transonic and supersonic flow regions. The aeroelastic analysis for the frequency and time domain is performed to obtain the flutter solution. The doublet lattice method(DLM) in subsonic flow is used to calculate unsteady aerodynamics in the frequency domain. For all speed range, the time domain nonlinear unsteady transonic small disturbance code has been incorporated into the coupled-time integration aeroelastic analysis (CTIA). Two curved wings with experimental data have been considered in this paper MSC/NASTRAN is used for natural free vibration analyses of wing models. Predicted flutter dynamic pressures and frequencies are compared with experimental data in subsonic and transonic flow regions.

This paper discussed on the effect of an intermediate support on the stability of elastic material subjected to dry friction force. It is assumed in this paper that the dry frictional force between a tool stand and an elastic material can be modeled as a distributed follower force. The elastic material on the friction material is modeled for simplicity into an elastic beam on Winkler-type elastic foundation. The stability of beams on the elastic foundation subjected to distributed follower force is formulated by using finite element method to have a standard eigenvalue problem. The first two eigen-frequencies are obtained to investigate the dynamics of the beam. The eigen-frequencies yield the stability bound and the corresponding unstable mode. The considered beams lose its stability by flutter or divergence, depending on the location of intermediate support.

In this paper a dynamic behavior(natural frequency) of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to follower force is presented. In addition, an analysis of the flutter and buckling instability of a cracked cantilever beam subjected to a follower compressive load is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's equation. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter instability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Besides, the effect of the crack's intensity and location on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.

Multiple tuned mass dampers are proposed to suppress the vertical and torsional buffeting and to increase the aerodynamic stability of long-span bridges. Each damper has vertical and torsional frequencies, which are tuned to the corresponding frequencies of the structural modes to suppress the resonant effects. These proposed dampers maintain the advantage of traditional multiple mass dampers, but have the added capability of simultaneously controlling vertical and torsional buffeting responses. The aerodynamic coupling is incorporated into the formulations, allowing this model to effectively increase the critical speed of a bridge for either single-degree-of-freedom flutter or coupled flutter. The reduction of dynamic response and the increase of the critical speed through the attachment of the proposed dampers to the bridge are also discussed. Through a parametric analysis, the characteristics of the multiple tuned mass dampers are studied and the design parameters - including mass, damping, frequency bandwidth, and total number of dampers - are proposed. The results indicate that the proposed dampers effectively suppress the vertical and the torsional buffeting and increase the structural stability. Moreover, these tuned mass dampers, designed within the recommended parameters, are not only more effective but also more robust than a single TMD against wind-induced vibration.

Equation of motion of non conservative system considering mass matrix, elastic stiffness matrix, load correction stiffness matrix by circulatory force's direction change and Winkler and Pasternak foundation stiffness matrix is derived. Also stability analysis due to the divergence and flutter loads is performed. And the influence of internal and external damping coefficient on flutter load is investigated applying the quadratic eigen problem solution. Additionally the influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping and Winkler and Pasternak foundation on the critical load of Beck's and Leipholz's and Hauger's columns are investigated.

To study the wake influence of an upstream bridge on the wind-resistance performance of a downstream bridge, two adjacent long-span cable-stayed bridges are taken as examples. Based on wind tunnel tests, the static aerodynamic coefficients and the dynamic response of the downstream bridge are measured in the wake of the upstream one. Considering different horizontal and vertical distances, the flutter derivatives of the downstream bridge at different angles of attack are extracted by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and discussed, and the change in critical flutter state is further studied. The results show that a train passing through the downstream bridge could significantly increase the lift coefficient of the bridge which has the same direction with the gravity of the train, leading to possible vertical deformation and vibration. In the wake of the upstream bridge, the change in lift coefficient of the downstream bridge is reduced, but the dynamic response seems to be strong. The effect of aerodynamic interference on flutter stability is related to the horizontal and vertical distances between the two adjacent bridges as well as the attack angle of incoming flow. At large angles of attack, the aerodynamic condition around the downstream girder which may drive the bridge to torsional flutter instability is weakened by the wake of the upstream bridge, and the critical flutter wind speed increases at this situation.

The paper deals with the flutter of a cantilevered beam subjected to a rocket thrust generated by a solid rocket motor. It is saaumed that the rocket thrust is to be a constant follower thrust, and produced by the installation of a solid rocket motor to the tip end of the cantilevered beam. The rocket motor is considered to be a rigid body having finite sizes, but not a mass point as it has been assumed so far. Governing equations are derived through the extended Hamilton's principle, and finite element method is applied to obtain the theoretical prediction for critical follower thrust. The maximum follower thrust is also calculated through the change of shear deformation parameter of the beam in the numerical simulation. The theoretical prediction for flutter or stability is verified by experiment. The experimental results show that critical follower thrust in theory agrees well with the experimental value taking account of the magnitude, rotary inertia of the rocket motor and the distance from the tip end of the beam to the center of gravity of the rocket motor.

In this paper, the stability of a rotating cantilever pipe conveying fluid with a crack is investigated by the numerical method. That is, the influences of the rotating angular velocity, mass ratio and crack severity on the critical flow velocity for flutter instability of system are studied. The equations of motion of rotating pipe are derived using the Euler beam theory and the Lagrange's equation. The crack section of pipe is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. Generally, the critical flow velocity for flutter is proportional to the angular velocity and the depth of crack. Also, the critical flow velocity and stability maps of the rotating pipe system as a function of mass ratio for the changing each parameter are obtained.
