  • The authors apply the transfer influence coefficient method to the 3-dimensional vibration analysis of beam with multi-joints and formulate a general algorithm to analysis the longitudinal, flexural and torsional coupled free vibration. In this paper, the structure, which is mainly founded in the robot arms, cranes and so on, has some crooked parts, subsystems and joints but has no closed loop in this system. It is modeled as the beam of a distributed mass system with massless translational, rotational and torsional springs in each node, and joint elements of release or roll at which node the displacement vector is discontinuous. The superiorty of the present method to the transfer matrix method in the computation accuracy was confirmed by the numerical computation results. Moreover, we confirmed that boundary and intermediate conditions could ve controlled by varying the values o the spring constants.

  • Recently, arches are used structurally because of their high in-plane stiffness and strength, which result from their ability to transmit most of the applied loading by axial forces actions, so that the bending actions are reduced. On the other hand, the resistances of arches to (out-of-plane,) flexural-torsional behavior depend on the rigidities EI/sub y/, for lateral bending, GJ for Uniform torsion, and EI/sub w/ for warping torsion which are related to axial stress for flexural-torsional behavior. The resistance of an arch to out-of-plane behavior may be reduced by its in-plane curvature, and so it may require significant lateral bracing. Thus. it is supposed that In-plane preloading which cause an axial stress, have an effect on out-of-plane free vibration behavior of arches. Because axial stresses caused increase or decrease out-of-plane stiffness. But study about this substance is insufficient. In this thesis, We will study an effect of preloading on lateral free vibration of arches, using finite element method based on Kang and Yoo's curved beam theory (about curved beam element have 7 degree of freedom including warping) with FORTRAN programming.

  • The study deals with the vibration of a beam whose flexural and centroidal axes are not coincident. The elementary bending-twisting theory is employed to derive the equation of motion, in which the effects of rotary inertia are added to the bending displacements and the effects of warping are added to the twist. Bending translation is restricted to one direction so that one bending equation is used instead of two. The equations of motion are solved by using the boundary value problem. The exact natural frequencies are fund from the frequency equation, which is obtained from the condition that the homogeneous system of algebraic equations representing the spatial solution shall not yield a trivial solution. The orthogonal conditions are established, and the principal mode equations of forced vibration are derived. As an example, the cantilevered beam is chosen and the first some natural frequencies and their modal shapes are found.

  • Dynamic characteristics of smart laminated composite plates with passive constrained layer damping have been investigated to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fur flexural vibrations of symmetrical, multi-layer laminated plates. The damping ratio and modal damping of the first bending and torsional modes are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. (omitted)

  • In this paper, the influence of a crack on the natural frequency of cracked cantilever L-shaped beam with coupled bending and torsional vibrations by analytically and experimentally is analyzed. The L-shaped beam with a crack is modeled by Hamilton's principle with consideration of bending and torsional energy. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth-order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first, second and third mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The theoretical results are validated by a comparison with experimental measurements. The maximal difference between the theoretical results and experimental measurements of the natural frequency is less than 7.5% in the second vibration mode.

  • A study on the dynamic mechanical properties of the high strength carbon fiber epoxy composite beam was carried out. The macromechanical model was used for the theoretical analysis of the symmetric laminated composite beam. The anisotropic plate theory and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory were used to predict the effective flexural elastic modulus and the specific damping capacity of laminated composite beam. The free flexural vibration and torsional vibration tests were carried out to determine the specific damping capacities of the unidirectional laminated composite beam. The vibration tests were performed in a vacuum chamber with laser vibrometer system and electromagnetic hammer to obtain accurate experimental data. From the computational and experimental results, it was found that the theoretical values with the macromechanical analysis and the experimental data of symmetric laminated composite beam were in good agreement.

  • Nonlinear models for a thin ring rotating at a constant speed are developed. The geometric nonlinearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton’s principle, the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from the nonlinear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the behavior of the rotating ring.

  • This paper deals with flexural-torsional free vibrations of the circular strip foundation with the variable breadth on Pasternak soil. The cross-section of the strip foundation is chosen as the rectangular one with the constant thickness and variable breadth, which is symmetrical about the mid-arc. Also, the foundation that supports the circular strip is modeled as the Pasternak soil with the shear layer. Ordinary differential equations accompanying the boundary conditions are derived. In the governing equations, the transverse, rotatory and torsional inertias are included. These equations are solved numerically and four lowest frequencies are obtained. In the numerical results, the effects of foundation parameters on frequencies are extensively investigated. It is expected that the theories and numerical results of this study can be used in the dynamic design of strip foundations.

  • In this paper, the natural frequency of a cracked cantilever L-beams with a coupled bending and torsional vibrations is investigate by theory and experiment. In addition, a method for detection of crack in a cantilever L-beams is presented based on natural frequency measurements. The governing differential equations of a cracked L-beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. Futher, the dynamic transfer matrix method is used for calculation of a exact natural frequencies of L-beams. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during vibrations. In this study, the differences between the actual and predicted positions and sizes of crack are less than about 10 % and 39.5 % respectively.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of wave transmission through various junctions in coupled beams. The in-plane vibration as veil as the out-of-plane vibration are generated due to the wave conversion at the junctions in the coupled beams. The out-of-plane vibration is associated with propagation of out-of-plane waves (flexural waves). The in-plane vibration is associated with propagation of in-plane waves (longitudinal and torsional waves). In order to effectively reduce vibration and structure-borne noise, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of wave conversion at various junctions in the coupled structures. The numerical results in this paper have showed the characteristics of wave transmission through various junctions in coupled beams. Those could be helpful to designer to develop the idea to reduce vibration and structure-borne noise.
