  • In this study, we develop numerical model using the elliptic mild-slope equation for waves propagating around axis-symmetric topographies where the water depth varies arbitrarily having zero at the coastline. The entire region is divided into three regions. In the both of inner and outer regions, an existing analytical solutions are used. In the middle region, the finite element technique is applied to the governing equation. To get the solution, the methods of separation of variables, Frobenius series are used. Developed solution is validated by comparing with previously developed analytical solution. We also investigate various cases with different bottom topographies.

  • A discontinuous Galerkin method with interior penalty terms is presented for linear Sobolev equation. On appropriate finite element spaces, we apply a symmetric interior penalty Galerkin method to formulate semidiscrete approximate solutions. To deal with a damping term $\nabla{\cdot}({\nabla}u_t)$ included in Sobolev equations, which is the distinct character compared to parabolic differential equations, we choose special test functions. A priori error estimate for the semidiscrete time scheme is analyzed and an optimal $L^\infty(L^2)$ error estimation is derived.

  • A three-dimensional calculation is presented on the basis of Wu's theory of quasi-three-dimensional flow in turbo impellers. For the calculation of flow on the Blade-to-Blade stream surface, the finite element method is applied. In this work it is shown that the Kutta condition and the periodicity can be satisfied rationally by the technique of combining a basic through flow in the flow passage and a circulating flow around the blade. The results of numerical calculation are compared with those of the exact solution of the Gostelow's straight cascade and of the experimental results of pressure distribution on the rotating blade surface. It is found that the numerical solutions are in good agreement with the theoretical solution and the experimental results.

  • Bolted joint assembly for nuclear power plants consists of various components : cover plate, retainer plate, manway flange, gasket and stud bolts/nuts. To guarantee the soundness of the joint, it is important to prevent leakage through the gasket and reduce the stress concentration factor at the thread root. In this paper, Submodeling technique for the finite element method is proposed to accurately compute three dimensional contact stresses which govern the sealing performance and the maximum contact stresses at the threads root. For verification of global solutions used as boundary conditions of submodel solution, the stresses on the cover plate and the manway flange are measured by strain gages when internal pressure is applied to the bolted joint assembly. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results.

  • A new approach to die shape optimal design in extrusion is presented. The approach consists of a FEM analysis model to predict the value of the objective function a design model to relate the die profile with the design variables and a genetic algorithm based optimaization procedure. The approach was described in detail with emphasis on our modified micro genetic algorithm. Comparison with theoretical solutions was made to examine the validity of the predicted optimal die shapes. The approach was then applied to revealing the optimal die shapes with regard to various objective functions including those for which the design sensitivities can not be deter-mined analytically.

  • A seven-port impedance and admittance matrices of multilayered piezoelectric beam are derived for the analysis of piezoelectric AFM ( atomic force microscope) cantilever that is partially covered by the piezoelectric layer. The variational principle is used for deriving the extensional and flexural motional equations and the conjugate parameters. Overall impedance matrix of AFM cantilever can be obtained by combining two impedance matrices of the covered and the non-covered. she resonance and antiresonance frequencies and the effective electromechanical coupling factors are calculated using the derived matrices. The results and the three dimensional finite element solutions are compared with the experimental results in other publication.

  • The governing equation of flow in porous media is developed on the bases of the continuity equation of fluid for transient flow through a saturated-unsaturated zone, and substitution of Darcy's law. The numerical solutions are obtained by finite element method based on the Galerkin principles weighted residuals. The analysis are carried out by using the unsteady storm data observed and rainfall intensities which are obtained by using the rainfall excess model in considering of the initial losses. The functional relationships between the hydraulic conductivity, capillary pressure head and volumetric water content are applied to the flow of water through unsaturated soil varied with changes of water content.

  • Section design of vehicle structure has been developed by two methods. One is the section property method which uses section property as a design variable. This method shows the tendency of an optimum section approximately. The other method is the section shape method which utilizes geometric parameter of section as a design variable. Practical solutions are obtained by this method. However, it is very expensive for large-scale problems due to the large number of geometric parameters. These two methods are compared through several sample problems. The finite element method is used for the structural and sensitivity analyses. The results are analyzed based on the number of function evaluations, the quality of cost function, the complexity of programing, and etc. The applications of both methods are also discussed.

  • This paper presents a design and analysis solutions for the general class and control parameter estimation of slotted iron-cored Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor with Halbach magnetization stator and 3-phase winding mover. In our design and analysis, stator consisting of permanent magnets and slotted iron-cored coil mover are treated in a uniform way via magnetic vector potential. For one such motor structure, we give analytical formulas for its magnetic field, back electromotive force and trust force. Moreover, the detent force are calculated by the relative permeance function. In good agreement with the estimated values from the analyses, the experimental results and Finite Element Method (FEM) confirm the validity of the design and analysis framework.

  • This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM), with segmental rotor structure, using finite element method in which the moving mesh technique is considered. The focus of this paper is the sensorless vector control parameters estimation of SynRM under saturation and iron loss. Comparisons are given with dynamic characteristics of normal single B-H nonlinear solutions and those of proposed FEM & Preisach model of synchronous reluctance motor, respectively.
