The electrical/thermal stabilities and magnetic field controllability of a no-insulation (NI) high-temperature superconducting magnet are characterized by contact resistance between turn-to-turn layers, and the contact resistance characteristics are determined by properties of conductor surface and winding tension. In order to accurately predict the electromagnetic characteristics of the NI coil in a design stage, it is necessary to control the contact resistance characteristics within the design target parameters. In this paper, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of a rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) conductor were measured to analyze the effects of surface treatment conditions (roughness and oxidation level) of the copper stabilizer layer in REBCO conductor. The test samples with different surface roughness and oxidation levels were fabricated and conductor surface analysis was performed using scanning electron microscope, alpha step surface profiler and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of the samples were measured using the four-terminal method in a liquid nitrogen impregnated cooling environment. Compared with as-received REBCO conductor sample, the contact resistance values of the REBCO conductors, which were post-treated by the scratch and oxidation of the surface of the copper stabilizer layer, tended to increase, and the critical current values were decreased under certain roughness and oxidation conditions.

Mineral electrical insulating oil, which is widely used in transformers, exhibits excellent cooling performance and transformer efficiency. However, given that it is composed of petroleum-based components, it is weak in terms of biodegradability. This causes environmental problems in case of leakage and a low flash point, which is a factor that would cause great damage in the event of a fire in a substation. In this context, the use of eco-friendly electric insulating oil composed of bio-based vegetable oil and synthetic ester, which has excellent biodegradability and flame retardancy performance, has recently been expanded to the field of electric power, and various research and development (R&D) studies are in progress. According to different research results, vegetable oil and synthetic ester manufacturing technology, thermal stability, oxidation stability, property change, and quality control, which are characteristics of eco-friendly electrical insulating oils, are major factors affecting the maintenance of insulating oil properties. In addition, power companies have established and operated quality control standards according to the use of eco-friendly electrical insulating oil as they expand the exploitatoin of renewable energy in electricity production. In particular, deterioration and oxidation characteristics were jointly identified in R&D as an important influencing factor according to the content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids present in vegetable oils and synthetic esters in power transformer applications.

Geothermal energy is gaining wide attention as a highly efficient renewable energy and being increasingly used for heating/cooling systems of buildings. The standing column well (SCW) is especially efficient, cost-effective, and suitable for Korean geological and hydrological conditions. However, a numerical model that simulates the SCW has not yet been developed and applied in Korea. This paper describes the development of the SCW numerical model using a finite-volume analysis program. The model, through hydro-thermal coupled analyses, simulates heat transfer through advection, convection, and conduction. The accuracy of the model was verified through comparisons with field data measured at SCWs in the U.S. and Korea. Comparisons indicated that the SCW numerical model can closely predict the performance of a SCW. The numerical model was used to perform a comprehensive parametric study in the companion paper.

Beam position measurement system can not only provide the beam position monitoring, but also be used for global orbit correction to reduce beam loss risk and maximize acceptance. The Beam Position Monitors (BPM) are installed along the synchrotron to acquire beam position with the front-end electronics and data acquisition system (DAQ). To realize high precision orbit measurement in the main heavy ion synchrotron and cooling storage ring of heavy-ion research facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSRm), a series of alignment and calibration work has been implemented on the BPM and its DAQ system. This paper analyzed the tests performed in the laboratory as well as with beam based on the developed algorithms and hardware. Several filtering algorithms were designed and implemented on the acquired BPM raw data, then the beam position and resolution were calculated and analyzed. The results show that the position precision was significantly improved from more than 100 ㎛ to about 50 ㎛ by implementing the new designed filtering algorithm. According to the analyzation of the measurement results and upcoming physical requirements, further upgrade scheme for the BPM DAQ system of CSRm based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology was proposed and discussed.

The Small Punch Test (SPT) was developed to evaluate the softening and embrittlement of materials such as power plants and nuclear fusion reactors by taking samples in the field. Specimens used in the SPT are very thin and small disk-shaped compared to specimens for general tensile test, and thus have economic advantages in terms of miniaturization and repeatability of the test. The cryogenic SPT can also be miniaturized and has a significantly lower heat capacity than conventional universal test machines. This leads to reduced cooling and warm-up times. In this study, the cryogenic SPT was developed by modifying the existing room temperature SPT to be cooled by liquid nitrogen using a super bellows and a thermal insulation structure. Since the cryogenic SPT was first developed, basic experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of it. For the validation, aluminum alloy 6061- T6 specimens were tested for mechanical properties at room and cryogenic temperature. The results of the corrected tensile properties from the SPT experiment results were compared with known room temperature and cryogenic properties. Based on the correction results, the effectiveness of the cryogenic SPT test was confirmed, and the surface fracture characteristics of the material were analyzed using a 3d image scanner. In the future, we plan to conduct property evaluation according to the development of various alloy materials.
The use of geothermal energy has increased for economically and environmentally friendly utilization, and a geothermal heat pump (GSHP) system for space heating and cooling is being used widely. As ground thermal properties such as ground thermal conductivity and ground thermal diffusivity are substantial parameters in the design of geothermal heat pump system, ground thermal conductivity should be obtained from in-situ thermal response test (TRT). This paper presents an experimental study of ground thermal properties of U and 2U type ground heat exchangers (GHEs) measured by TRTs. The U and 2U type GHEs were installed in a partially saturated dredged soil deposit, and TRTs were conducted for 48 hours. A method to derive the thermal diffusivity as well as thermal conductivity was proposed from a non-linear regression analysis. In addition, remolded soil samples from different layers were collected from the field, and soil specimens were reconstructed according to the field ground condition. Then equivalent ground thermal conductivity and ground thermal diffusivity were calculated from the lab test results and they were compared with the in-situ TRT results.

Objectives: The genus Legionella is common in aquatic environments. Some species of Legionella are recognized as potential opportunistic pathogens for human, notably Legionella pneumophila that causes, Legionellosis. Thus, we investigated the contamination of Legionella pneumophila on water supply systems in Seoul, including cooling towers, public baths, hospitals and fountains. Methods: The existence of 16S rRNA and mip gene of L. pneumophila was confirmed in the genome of the isolated strains by PCR. Results: During the summer season of 2010 and 2011, Legionella pneumophila were detected from 163 samples (21.1%) out of 772 samples collected. Among the 163 strains of L. pneumophila, eighty one isolates belonged to serogroup 1 (57.4%), 23 isolates were serogroup 5 (16.3%), 21 isolates were serogroup 6 (14.9%), 8 isolates were serogroup 2 (5.79%), and 8 isolates were identified in serogroup 3 (5.7%). Through PFGE (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis) analysis using Sfi I, genetic types of L. pneumophila were classified into five (A to E) patterns by the band similarity with excess of 70% from public baths. Conclusions: The PFGE patterns of the serotypes showed a tendency for diversity of L. pneumophila. Our results suggest the existence of serological and genetic diversity among the L. pneumophila isolates.

The positions of Kr atoms encapsulated in the molecular-dimensioned cavities of fully dehydrated zeolite A of unit-cell composition Cs3Na8HSi12Al12O48 (Cs3-A) have been determined. Cs3-A was exposed to 1025 atm of krypton gas at 400 $^{\circ}C$ for four days, followed by cooling at pressure to encapsulate Kr atoms. The resulting crystal structure of Cs3-A(6Kr) (a = $12.247(2)\AA$, R1 = 0.078, and R2 = 0.085) has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Pm3m at $21(1)^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. In the crystal structure of Cs3-A(6Kr), six Kr atoms per unit cell are distributed over three crystallographically distinct positions: each unit cell contains one Kr atom at Kr(1) on a threefold axis in the sodalite unit, three at Kr(2) opposite four-rings in the large cavity, and two at Kr(3) on threefold axes in the large cavity. Relatively strong interactions of Kr atoms at Kr(1) and Kr(3) with Na+ ions of six-rings are observed: Na-Kr(1) = 3.6(1) $\AA$ and Na-Kr(3) = $3.08(5)\AA.$ In each sodalite unit, one Kr atom at Kr(1) was displaced $0.74\AA$ from the center of the sodalite unit toward a Na+ ion, where it can be polarized by the electrostatic field of the zeolite, avoiding the center of the sodalite unit which by symmetry has no electrostatic field. In each large cavity, five Kr atoms were found, forming a trigonal-bipyramid arrangement with three Kr(2) atoms at equatorial positions and two Kr(3) atoms at axial positions. With various reasonable distances and angles, the existence of Kr5 cluster was proposed (Kr(2)-Kr(3) = $4.78(6)\AA$ and Kr(2)-Kr(2) = $5.94(7)\AA$, Kr(2)-Kr(3)-Kr(2) = 76.9(3), Kr(3)-Kr(2)-Kr(3) = 88(1), and Kr(2)-Kr(2)-Kr(2) = $60^{\circ}).$ These arrangements of the encapsulated Kr atoms in the large cavity are stabilized by alternating dipoles induced on Kr(2) by four-ring oxygens and Kr(3) by six-ring Na+ ions, respectively.

Many companies have tried to develop wind power generators with a larger capacity, smaller size and lighter weight. High temperature superconducting (HTS) generators are more suitable for wind power systems because they can reduce volume and weight compared with conventional generators. However, the HTS generator has problems such as huge vacuum vessel and the difficulty of repairing the HTS field coils. These problems can be overcome through the modularization of the HTS field coil. The HTS module coil require a current leads (CLs) for deliver DC current, which causes a large heat transfer load. Therefore, CLs should be designed optimally for reducing the conduction and Joule heat loads. This paper deals with a structural design and thermal analysis of a module coil for a 750 kW-class HTS generator. The conduction and radiation heat loads of the module coils were analysed using a 3D finite element method program. As a result, the total thermal load was less than the cooling capacity of the cryo-cooler. The design results can be effectively utilized to develop a superconducting generator for wind power generation systems.
