  • Recently, several vector hysteresis models such as vector Preisach, vector Jiles-Atherton and dynamic E&S model have been proposed to describe vector magnetic properties of electrical steel sheets. However, it is still difficult to find an adequate vector hysteresis model in finite element application for both the Non-oriented and Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets under alternating and rotating field conditions. In this paper, an improved E&S vector hysteresis model is suggested to describe the vector magnetic properties of both Non-oriented and Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets under various magnetic field conditions including alternating and rotating magnetic field conditions. The validity of the proposed model is tested through comparisons with the experimental results under various magnetic field conditions.

  • Since 1970, herbicides have been widely used in the crop production, especially in paddy field in Korea. In 1978, both preemergence and postemergence type herbicides are applied in the approximately 70% of total paddy field and 15% of upland to control weeds. Most herbicides control annual weeds effectively, but perennials have been problems in the paddy field. Under upland conditions, effectiveness of herbicides varies depending on many environmental conditions (soil moisture, soil physical properties, temperature, etc.) as well as uniform application of appropriate amounts of herbicides. In Korea, many research works have been concentrated on the screening of new herbicides in terms of herbicide effectiveness and yield or phytotoxicity of crops, and especially on the paddy field. However, physiological aspects of herbicidal action in plant and interaction of herbicides with the environments have not been studied approximately. Therefore, researches on the uptake of herbicides and the influence of herbicides on the physiological phenomena such as photosynthesis, respiration, nutrient uptake etc., to control troublesome perennial weeds in the paddy field are needed in future. Also some researches are needed to improve effectiveness of herbicirdes under upland conditions.

  • In this paper, we obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for the Reeb vector field of a trans-Sasakian 3-manifold to be minimal or harmonic. We construct some examples to illustrate main results. As applications of the above results, we obtain some new characteristic conditions under which a compact trans-Sasakian 3-manifold is homothetic to either a Sasakian or cosymplectic 3-manifold.

  • This Paper describes an algorithm for the design of axi-symmetrical spacer under specified field conditions. The electric field alas been calculated by combination method of Integral Equation Method(IEM) and Charge Simulation Method(CSM). The contour of spacer is represented with NURB(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline) curve of which effectiveness has been proved. This algorithm introduces a design process in the aspect of electrical field, when a spacer in airtight cylinder is designed. Also various field conditions for obtaining optical shapes have been proposed. Due to the algorithm, the entire process shows a stable convergence. Both tangential and total electrical field are taken into consideration as specified field criteria.

  • In 1994, an abnormal rice growth was observed in a 0.5-ha scale farmer's field located at Chogye-Myeon, Hapcheon-Gun, Gyeongnam Province where rice cv. Hwayeongbyeo was seeded directly in dry paddy field conditions. The major symptoms were less stands per acreage, short leaf length, and hypertrophy of root tip portion. The disorder was identified as rice seeding bight caused by Rhizopus sp. The average plant stand per m2 in the infested field was 108, while it was 375 in the normal field, and leaf growth was retarded to less than one-third of healthy plant. The average leaf lengths of infected and healthy seedlings were 12.8cm and 38.9cm, respectively. When the infected seedlings were transplanted to pots, flooded-soil conditions developed no new root growth but upland conditions allowed 11.2 new roots emerging. The length of newly emerged root in infested soil was 5.3cm in upland and 7.1cm in intermediate flooding conditions. However, it was 10.9cm in non-infested soil with intermediate flooding conditions. When the plants were matured, the stem length of infected plants was reduced slightly as compared to normal plants, whereas the length of panicle was not significantly different between infected and healthy plants. The number of panicle per plant, however, greatly different with variation of infection degree. Grain quality such as the number of complete and incomplete grains per panicle, the complete grain weight per panicle, and the weight of 1000 grains was not significantly different.

  • A finite element based on the efficient higher order zig-zag theory with multiple delaminations Is developed to refine the predictions of frequency and mode shapes. Displacement field through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions including delaminated interfaces as well as free hounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. Thus the proposed theory is not only accurate but also efficient. This displacement field can systematically handle the number, shape, size, and locations of delaminations. Throught the dynamic version of variational approach, the dynamic equilibrium equations and variationally consistent boundary conditions are obtained. Through the natural frequency analysis and time response analysis of composite plate with multiple delaminations, the accuracy and efficiency of the present finite element are demonstrated. The present finite element is suitable in the predictions of the dynamic response of the thick composite plate with multiple delaminations.

  • Although continuous casting process has highly developed, there still remain many problems to be considered. Specifically, two vortex flows resulting from impingement against narrow walls make a flow field unstable in a mold, and it is directly related to internal and external defects of steel products. To cope with this instability, EMBR (Electromagnetic Brake Ruler) technique has been lately studied for the stability of molten steel flow, and it is revealed that molten steel flow in a mold can be controlled with applied magnetic field. However, it is still difficult to clarify flow pattern in an EMBR caster due to complex correlations among variables such as geometric factors, casting conditions, and the place and the intensity of charged magnetic field. In the present study, flow field in a mold is focused with different conditions of electromagnetic effect. To accurately analyze the case, three dimensional low Reynolds turbulent model and appropriate boundary conditions are chosen. To evaluate the electromagnetic effect in molten steel flow, dimensionless numbers are employed. The results show that the location and the intensity of the applied magnetic field significantly influence the flow pattern. Both impingement and internal flow pattern are changed remarkably with the change of the location of applied magnetic field. It turns out that an insufficient magnetic force yields adverse effect like channeling, and rather lowers the quality of steel product.

  • The vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) analysis might be cumbersome and computationally expensive in bridge engineering due to the necessity of solving large number of coupled system of equations. However, VBI analysis can provide valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of highway bridges under specific loading conditions. Hence, this paper presents a numerical study on the dynamic behavior of a conventional highway bridge under strong near-field and far-field earthquake motions considering the VBI effects. A recursive substructuring method, which enables solving bridge and vehicle equations of motion separately and suitable to be adapted to general purpose finite element softwares, was used. A thorough analysis that provides valuable information about the effect of various traffic conditions, vehicle velocity, road roughness and effect of soil conditions under far-field and near-field strong earthquake motions has been presented. A real-life concrete highway bridge was chosen for numerical demonstrations. In addition, sprung mass models of vehicles consist of conventional truck and car models were created using physical and dynamic properties adopted from literature. Various scenarios, of which the results may help to highlight the different aspects of the dynamic response of concrete highway bridges under strong earthquakes, have been considered.

  • The structural phase transformations of $0.7Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-0.3PbTiO_3$ (PMN-0.3PT) were studied using high resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD) as a function of temperature and electric field. A phase transformational sequence of cubic (C)${\rightarrow}$tetragonal (T)${\rightarrow}$rhombohedral (R) phase was observed in zero-field-cooled conditions; and a $C{\rightarrow}T{\rightarrow}$monoclinic $(M_C){\rightarrow}$ monoclinic ($M_A$) phase was observed in the field-cooled conditions. The transformation of T to $M_A$ phase was realized through an intermediate $M_C$ phase. The results also represent conclusive and direct evidence of a $M_C$ to $M_A$ phase transformation in field-cooled conditions. Beginning from the zero-field-cooled condition, a $R{\rightarrow}M_A{\rightarrow}M_C{\rightarrow}T$ phase transformational sequence was found with an increasing electric field at a fixed temperature. Upon removal of the field, the $M_A$ phase was stable at room temperature. With increasing the field, the transformation temperature from T to $M_C$ and from $M_C$ to $M_A$ phase decreased, and the phase stability ranges of both T and $M_C$ phases increased. Upon removal of the field, the phase transformation from R to $M_A$ phase was irreversible, but from $M_A$ to $M_C$ was reversible, which means that $M_A$ is the dominant phase under the electric field. In the M phase region, the results confirmed that lattice parameters and tilt angles were weakly temperature dependent over the range of investigated temperatures.

  • This paper presents the analysis and experiment results on the electrical and thermal characteristics of metal insulation (MI) REBCO racetrack coil, which was wound with stainless steel (SS) tape between turn-to-turn layers, under rotating magnetic field and conduction cooling system. Although the field windings of superconducting rotating machine are designed to operate on a direct current, they may be subjected to external magnetic field due to the unsynchronized armature windings during electrical or mechanical load fluctuations. The field windings show the voltage and magnetic field fluctuations and the critical current reduction when they are exposed to an external magnetic field. Moreover, the cryogenic cooling conditions are also identified as the factors that affect the electrical and thermal characteristics of the HTS coil because the characteristic resistance changes according to the cryogenic cooling conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of external magnetic field on the electrical and thermal characteristics of MI-SS racetrack coil for further development reliable HTS field windings of superconducting rotating machine. First, the major components of the experiment test (i.e., HTS racetrack coil construction, armature winding of 75 kW class induction motor, and conduction cooling system) were fabricated and assembled. Then, the MI racetrack coil was performed under liquid nitrogen bath and conduction cooling conditions to estimate the key parameters (i.e., critical current, time constant, and characteristic resistance) for the test coil in the steady state operation. Further, the test coil was charged to the target value under conduction cooling of 35 K then exposed to the rotating magnetic field, which was generated by three phrase armature windings of 75 kW class induction motor, to investigate the electrical and thermal characteristics during the transient state.
