The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) applied into the neural line of a power system, which can limit the unsymmetrical fault current from the single-line ground fault or the double-line ground fault, was reported to be the effective application location of the SFCL in a power system. However, the limiting operation for the symmetrical fault current like the triple line-ground fault is not effective because of properties of the balanced three-phase system. In this paper, the limiting method of the symmetrical fault current in a power system with a SFCL applied into neutral line was suggested. Through the short-circuit experiments of the three-phase fault types for the suggested method, the fault current limiting and recovery characteristics of the SFCL in the neutral line were analyzed and the effectiveness of the suggested method was described.
In this paper, we analyzed the operational characteristics of the fault current limiting according to the amplitude of the fault current for the transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). If the fault current happens, the superconducting element connected to the secondary coil is occurred quench and the fault current is limited. When the larger fault current occurs, the superconducting element connected to the third coil is occurred additional quench and the peak fault current is limited. We found that the fault current can be more effectively controlled through the analysis of the fault current limiting and the short-circuit tests.
The aim of this study is to improve the fault decision ability of FRTU (Feeder remote terminal unit) in DAS (Distribution automation system). FRTU uses the FI (Fault indicator) algorithm based on fault current pickup and operation of the protection device. Even if the inrush current flows or the protection device is sensitive to the transient current, FRTU may indicate incorrect fault information. To address these problems, we propose an improved fault recognition algorithm that can be applied to FRTU. We will detect a specific wave that is indicative of a fault, and use this information to identify a fault wave. The specific wave-detection algorithm is based on the duration and periodicity of the voltage, current, and harmonic variations. In addition, we propose fault recognition algorithms using voltage factor variation analysis and DWT (Discrete wavelet transform). All the wave data used in this study were actual data stored in FRTU.
In this paper, the limiting characteristics of the fault current in a power system with a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) applied into neutral line of main transformer in a distribution power line were analyzed. The SFCL applied into the neutral line of main transformer power system can limit the unsymmetrical fault current from the single-line ground fault or the double-line ground fault. In addition, it could be decreased a number of SFCL and a load. This method could be expected to reduction of a power loss in the neutral line, because of a neutral line current is zero in ordinary times.
We simulated the current limiting characteristics of a resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for a single line-to-ground fault in the 22.9 kV system. The transient current during the fault increased to 6.33 kA, 5.80 kA and 3.71 kA without SFCL at the fault angles 0$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$, respectively, a resistive SFCL limited effectively the fault current to 2.27 kA in a half cycle without any DC components. The maximum quench resistance of an SFCL, 16Ω was suggested to be appropriate to limit the fault current in the 22.9 kV distribution system, considering the operating cooperation of a protective relay and the current limiting performance of an SFCL.
We investigated the unbalanced characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased about 6 times of transport currents after the fault onset but was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unbalanced rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unbalanced rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault onset. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the balanced component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault onset but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase balanced state in about 60 ms after the fault onset at the three-phase system.
When the accident occurred in power distribution system, it needs to control efficiently the fault current according to the fault angle and location. The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) can quickly limit when the short circuit accidents occurred and be made the resistance after the fault current. The flux-lock type SFCL has a single triggering element, detects and limits the fault current at the same time regardless of the size of the fault current. However, it has a disadvantage that broken the superconductor element. If the flux-lock type SFCL has separated structure of the triggering element and the limiting element, when large fault current occurs, it can reduce the burden of power and control fault current to adjust impedance. In this paper, this system is composed by triggering element and limiting element to analyze operation of limiting current. When the fault current occurs, we analyzed the limiting and operating current characteristics of the two triggering current level, and the compensation characteristics of bus-voltage sag according to the fault angle and location.
In this paper, the power burden of High-TC superconducting (HTSC) module comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two triggering currents during the fault period was analyzed. The short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the SFCL in the different fault positions, which were expected to affect the amplitude of the fault current, were carried out. Through the comparative analysis on the power burden of the HTSC modules, the proposed flux-lock type SFCL was confirmed to be effective to divide into two power burdens according to the amplitude of the fault currents.
According to the continuous demand for power and the growth of electric power utilities, the electric power transmission capacity was increased. The increase of the electric power transmission capacity results in an increase of the fault current level a fault happened. So the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) has been reached as the countermeasure for the reduction of the fault current. In this paper, we investigate the fault currents characteristics of resistive type SFCL according to fault angles when AC power source applied. As the fault angles increase, the first peak value of fault current decreased lower. On the other hand, the power burden of SFCL increased.
When the current of the superconducting element exceeds its critical current by the fault occurrence, the quench of the high-$T_C$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC) comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) occurs. Simultaneously, the magnetic flux in the iron core induces the voltage in each coil, which contributes to limit the fault current. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL as well as the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics according to the flux-lock type SFCL's winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the flux-lock type SFCL were carried out. The flux-lock type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault occurs and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding.
