  • The caisson-type breakwaters have been widely used in the area of harbor construction. Because of the importance of the breakwaters, structural health monitoring in the breakwaters by using appropriate methods is of great needs. In this study, a caisson-type breakwater that has fatigue cracks due to wave-impact is investigated. First, a signal-based structural health monitoring method is proposed for the breakwaters structures. Excitation and sensor systems are designed on finite element model and monitoring categories are also selected. Structural health monitoring was realized by using measured dynamic response signals and analyzed information.

  • Precise concept analysis has been neglected be-cause of a lack of understanding of its necessity and a lack of conceptual analytic knowledge. Concept analysis is the mental work of examining parts, phenomenon and the interrelated whole of a thing. Focus in this article is to extract the critical attributes of hardiness and make an operational delinition. The process of concept analysis is illustrated and documented using the analytic approach described by Walker and Avant (1983). To explore the explicit or implicit meanings of hardiness, existing literature was reviewed. The evolution of hardiness and the dictionary definitions were also added. Hardiness can be defined as follows : A condition of being inured to fatigue or hardship which has three subcomponents-challenge, control and commitment. Critical attributes of hardiness were extracted that may be used in naming the occurrence of the phenomenon. Model case, contrary case, borderline case and related case were described. Antecedents and consequences were explored. The defining critical attributes of hardiness are : 1. Resistance-hardiness involves resistance of stress or hardship. 2. Hardiness involves appraisal of change as a chance. 3. Hardiness implies interpretation of events and self as influential,. 4. Hardiness requires active involving reaction Implications for nursing and for further study are added.

  • When a wheel profile of a train-tram is designed, both train and tram tracks should be considered. This study designed a wheel profile that enables high-speed driving(200km/h) on the train track and low speed driving on the tram track with multiple sharp curves. The study used the approximation optimization method to reduce cost and time, used the sequential quadratic programming method as the optimized algorithm, and the central composite design and response surface method as an approximate model. The optimized wheel shape based on this approximation optimization method reduced wear of the initial wheel showed a better performance in terms of derailment and lateral force.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the vibration and acoustic pressure radiation from a thin isotropic flat plate stiffened by a rectangular array of beams, and excited by a time harmonic point force. These constructions on aircraft and ship structures are often subjected to fiequency dependent pressure fluctuations and forces. Forces from the these excitations induce structural vibrations in a wide range of fiequencies, which may cause such things as acoustic fatigue and internal cabin noise in the aircraft. It is thus important that the response characteristics and vibration modes of such periodic structures be horn. From this theoretical model, the sound pressure levels(SPL) in a semi-infinite fluid(water) bounded by the plate with the variation in the locations of an external time harmonic point farce on the plate can be calculated efficiently using three numerical tools such as the Gauss-jordan method the LU decomposition method md the IMSL numerical package.

  • Nonlinear harmonic waves generated at cracked interfaces are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A compact tension specimen is fabricated and the amplitude of transmitted wave is analyzed as a function of position along the fatigued crack surface. In order to measure as many nonlinear harmonic components as possible a broadband Lithium Niobate ($LiNbO_3$) transducers are employed together with a calibration technique for making absolute amplitude measurements with fluid-coupled receiving transducers. Cracked interfaces are shown to generate high acoustic nonlinearities which are manifested as harmonies in the power spectrum of the received signal. The first subharmonic (f/2) and the second harmonic (2f) waves are found to be dominant nonlinear components for an incident toneburst signal of frequency f. To explain the observed nonlinear behavior a partially closed crack is modeled by planar half interfaces that can account for crack parameters such as crack opening displacement and crack surface conditions. The simulation results show reasonable agreements with the experimental results.

  • For commercial vehicles with a manual transmission, the pneumatic and fluid pressure servo-device is widely used for transmitting large torque. However, the pneumatic and fluid pressure servo-device usually results in non-linear variation of foot-efforts, also such characteristics tend to increase physical fatigue of drivers who drive commercial vehicles for a long time. Thus, vehicle manufacturers consider the hysteresis loops in the Clutch Actuation System (CAS) design when a new vehicle model is being developed. In this study, we numerically simulate the hysteresis loops for predictable CAS design, and the experimental results confirm the simulation results.

  • The rotating Rayleigh-Timoshenko beam element based on B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) is constructed to discrete short shaft and stiffness disc. The crack is represented by non-dimensional linear spring using linear fracture mechanics theory. The wavelet-based finite element model of rotor system is constructed to solve the first three natural frequencies functions of normalized crack location and depth. The normalized crack location, normalized crack depth and the first three natural frequencies are then employed as the training samples to achieve the neural networks for crack diagnosis. Measured natural frequencies are served as inputs of the trained neural networks and the normalized crack location and depth can be identified. The experimental results of fatigue crack in short shaft is also given.

  • In order to transport cargo rapidly and safely from the trans-Korean railway to the trans-Siberian railway having a different gauge, a gauge-changeable freight wagon can be used. Because the wagon is expected to run in South Korea, North Korea and Russia, it should have good dynamic performance in these railways. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a gauge-changeable freight wagon was analyzed numerically using ADAMS/Rail in each condition of the railways having different gauges and rail profiles. The wagon makes use of load sensitive friction damping and has highly nonlinear behaviour, which is modeled in detail as the full nonlinear dynamic model. It is shown that the running behaviour of the wagon is sensitive to changes in the rail gauge and profiles, however the assessment quantities from the point of view of safety, track fatigue and running behaviour are less than the limit valves.

  • An accelerated life test (ALT) is used to estimate the reliability of machinery parts and system with a design specification as soon as possible. However, accelerated life test results with simple and severe conditions are inconsistent with physical phenomena in real service condition. Therefore, to assure the safety of the machinery system, it is necessary to establish the appropriate test condition of the ALT of machinery element. In this study, fatigue analysis of the spur gear as a part of the gear box system in the rolling stock was performed. Moreover, based on the results, appropriate test condition of the ALT is developed using both the probabilistic model of the linear damage rule and accelerated durability analysis simulation.

  • Vibration localization characteristics of mistuned repeated structures are investigated. The mistuning often creates significant response discrepancies among subcomponents of a repeated structure. As the result of the discrepancies, critical fatigue often occurs in a repeated structure. Therefore, it is of great importance to predict the vibration response of the mistuned repeated structures accurately. In this paper, a simplified model is employed and dimensionless parameters that influence the localization characteristics are identified. Through parameter study, two localization phenomena are investigated and compared.
