Five hundred seventeen farmers(214 males and 303 females), over age 30 and living in Suh San County, Unsan township, were examined to determine the prevalence of peasants syndrome. Using the health interview questionnaire, the farmers were asked whether they had any of eight subjective symptoms during the past one month before the survey, October 1979. Those symptoms reported were scored based on a pre-determined point system. The farmers with high symptom scores(7 points or more) were further examined by the liver function test. In addition, all the sample(517 cases) were subjected to the examination of urinalysis and blood pressure. The liver function test is also undertaken for those farmers with high symptome scores(7 points or more) and those with abnormal findings in urinalysis and blood pressure. The results are summarized below: 1) 156 out of 517 farmers(30.2%) have had seven points or more of the symptom scores. Among the eight major symptoms, 72% of the farmers complained of lumbago. 2) The prevalence of peasant's syndrome were higher among females and the older age group. The symptom scores of this syndrome were slightly higher among women who have had many children (e. g. 4 or more). 3) The prevalence of peasant's syndrome was also related to the level of one's education-the lower education groups were found to have higher symptom scores of this syndrome. This may be due to the fact that the lower education groups are more exposed to manual labor. 4) The points of the peasants syndrome were higher in hypertensive farmers and those with abnormal findings of urinaly sis. 5) It was reported, in Japan, that those with high scores of the syndrome are more likely to have an abnormal findings in the liver function test. However, in this study it was observed that there was no significant difference between those with high scores of the syndrome (7 points or more) and those with low score of the syndrome(6 points or less) in the prevalence of abnormal liver function. As this study indicates that the point system given for the peasant's syndrome is closely related to the high bleod pressure and abnormal urinalysis(and to some extent to the abnormal liver function), there is a need to study peasant's syndrome more extensively. Such an effort will serve to detect varonic disease conditions among farmer's towards better management of farmer's health, which is vitally important for rural development in Korea.
In April of 2003, the gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea was occured in zinnia seedlings grown in greenhouse at Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and farmer's nursery. The symptoms of infected plants were started with water-soaking lesions in flower bud, leaves and stems. The lesions gradually expanded and infected plants became withered and discolored to gray or dark from the tip. The conidia and mycelia of the pathogen were appeared on flowers, leaves and stem. The conidia were gray, 1-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were 5${\sim}$16 ${\times}$ 4${\sim}$8 ${\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophores were 12${\sim}$28 ${\mu}m$ in size. The pathogenic fungi formed sclerotia abundantly on potato dextrose agar. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of Zinnia elegans caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.
Blister blight was occurred on tea (Thea sinensis) in a farmer's tea garden located in Sicheon-myon, Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam province, Korea. The typical symptoms of the disease were appeared on the leaves and bud. The early symptom were started with small yellowish spots then infected area became upheave and covered with white blister which the hymenium de.veloped from under neath of epidermis. Generally, the infected leaves and buds were appeared like rice cake. Colonies formed on PDA were developed white, later turned milk white. Basidia were 2 sterigma, and 30${\sim}$53 ${\times}$ 3.1${\sim}$5.8 ${\mu}m$ in size. Basidiospores were ellipsoid curved, coloriess, 1-celled and 11${\sim}$14.7 ${\times}$ 4${\sim}$5.4 ${\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was about $25^{\circ}C$ on PDA and PSA. This is the first report on the blister blight of tea caused by Exobasidium vexans in Korea.
Black root rot (BRR) caused by Lasiodiplodia theobromae is an alarming disease of mulberry that causes tremendous economic losses to sericulture farmers in India and China. Successful control of this disease can be attained by screening germplasm and identifying resistant sources. Seventy four diseased root samples were collected from farmer's fields belonging to four major mulberry growing states of South India. Based on morpho-cultural and scanning electron microscopy studies, 57 fungal isolates were characterized and identified as L. theobromae. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated internal transcribed spacer and β-tubulin sequences revealed variation of the representative 20 isolates of L. theobromae. Following the root dip method of inoculation, pathogenicity studies on susceptible mulberry genotypes (Victory-1 and Thailand male) recognized the virulent isolate MRR-142. Accordingly, MRR-142 isolate was used to evaluate resistance on a set of 45 diverse mulberry accessions. In the repeated experiments, the mulberry accession ME-0168 which is an Indonesian origin belonging to Morus latifolia was found to be highly resistant consistently against BRR. Eight accessions (G2, ME-0006, ME-0011, ME-0093, MI-0006, MI-0291, MI-0489, and MI-0501) were found to be resistant. These promising resistant resources may be exploited in mulberry breeding for developing BRR resistant varieties and to develop mapping populations which successively helps in the identification of molecular markers associated with BRR.
Black spot disease on sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. Fuyu) was found from the farmer's refregerated ware house located in Dong-eup, Changwon city, Gyeongnam province, Korea, 2002. The typical symptoms of the disease was appeared black spot on surface of fruits. Colonies of causal fungus were developed velvety and later turned olivaceous black to sooty black in color on PDA. Conidia were pale brown to golden brown in color and ovoid, obclavate to obpyriform, rarely ellipsoid in shape. and were 12∼46 ${\times}$ 6∼12 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Septa were 3∼5 transvers, 1∼2 longitudinal or oblique. Conidia were mostly beakless and generated chains by means of secondary conidiophores. Conidiophores were pale to mid brown in color and 42∼95 ${\times}$ 3∼5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was about 25∼3$0^{\circ}C$. This is the first report on the black spot of sweet persimmon caused by Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler in Korea.
A destructive collar rot disease was found on broad bean (Vicia faba) in several farmer's field located in Changseon-myon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do in 2001. The typical symptoms of the disease were stem rot, crown rot, wilt or blight. Upper parts of the infected stems were mostly blighted and white mycelial mats were spread over lesions and the sclerotia were formed on the stems near soil line. The infection rates of the disease in the surveyed area were ranged from 28.6 to 42.8%. The sclerotia of the fungus readily formed in artificial media such as PDA at $30^{\circ}C$ and its shape was globoid or irregular and size was $1.0{\sim}3.7{\times}1.0{\sim}2.8\;mm\;(av.\;1.0{\sim}2.3\;mm)$ and was brown or dark brown in color. The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was about $30^{\circ}C$. The typical clamp connections were found in the hypha of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenecity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the collar rot of broad bean caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.

Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus(BaYMV) is responsible for ane of the most improtant disease in malting Barley in Korea. It is transcitted by soil borne fungus, Polymyza graminis To estimate the occurrence pattern of BaYMV by the physio-chemical property of soil collected from farmer's sield, this study was conducted. The rate of didsease occurrence to BaYMV investigated at 19 spots of 10th regions. The sample soil was collected by 20 pots among an ifected field and analyzed th soil characters in 2002. The rate of disease occurrence to BaYMV was about 79%,60%,65% in Sacheon, Kosung and Hadong areas, respectively, which is malting Barley growing regions but Pohang, Yeongduk, Euesung, Gunwee, which are growing Covered Barley doesn't infected BaYMV. The tested of RT-PCR was showed that the BaYMV, BMMV.SBWMV. were identified in Milyang but the others regions was infected only to BaYMV. The physio-chemical property of soil collected from infected soil show various range such as pH(4.98~8.05), EC(0.44~2.7%),OM(1.61~6.85), P2O5958~519), K(0.22~1.82), Ca(2.3~9.7), Mg(0.5~2.6), Na(0.14~0.43) The correlation coefficient between physio-chemical property fo the infected soil and infection rate shows significant to pH at 5% level. Although OM and Ca were high scores, it doesn't significant at 5% but it need to be more study in future.
In May of 2002, the gray mold disease occurred severely on broad bean (Vicia faba) grown in farmer's fields located in Changseon-myon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam provice, Korea. The infected leaves, at first, discolored to gray or dark from the tip, and eventually died. Conidia of the fungus in mass were hyaline or gray, 1-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid and sized 6~22$\times$4~16 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Thick conidiophores were formed on PDA with 15~37 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in width. The sclerotia were readily formed potato-dextrose agar and optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was 2$0^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea based on its mycological characteristics. This is tile first report on gray mold of broad bean (Vicia faba) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.
The disease development of Anthracnose of sweet persimmon in relation to release of conida of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were observed in a farmer's field located in Jinju from 1998 to 2002. The conidia started to release from early April and reached maximum in June to late July. The amount of conidia production reduced drastically from early August. The number of conidia trapped was closely related to amount of precipitation at the same period and number of new infections on the emerging branches and young fruits in orchard. The conidia released during the April was not effected to disease occurrence of persimmon tree but the spores produced from inoculum source after early May significantly important to the infection of the pathogen on emerging branch and this infection was directly related to infections on young fruits. Consequently the early infections on the branches brought severe occurrence of Anthracnose in the orchard. Most of the infected fruits were dropped in unripe state. The earlier infection caused the earlier fruit drop. The rate of fruit drop was reached up to 84.1% in August when the disease was occurred severely. Anthracnose of sweet persimmon also occurred in market shelf and storage warehouse. The anthracnose fruits are presumed to be infected while in orchard. Because the symptom formed on the fruit was too tiny to eliminate, the infected fruits were involved in storage boxes and anthracnose gradually developed in storage condition. The rate of diseased fruit observed in Jinju area were 1.2 to 1.6%.

Powdery mildew and leaf mold were major diseases in organic cultured tomatoes. $NaHCO_3$ and $KH_2PO_4$ were selected as control agents for controlling tomato powdery mildew. Control effect of the selected control agents was increased when they were treated with oil-egg yolk mixtures (OEYO). Also four organic materials used commercially including copper hydroxide and sulfur, showed high control effect more than 90% in green house. Also two organic matters, copper hydroxide and sulfur showed high control effect in farmer's field. When tomatoes were cultivated in plastic house installed with circulation fan, incidence of powdery mildew and leaf mold was reduced by 56% and 60%, respectively.
