  • In this paper, a new technique and theory are proposed which correct the orientation (inclination of a vertical axis) of a cylinder in vertical-micro positioning device. An algorithm for determining the orientation of the cylinder with a pair of displacement sensor units is derived and two types of the correction methods are described. To assess the performance and efficiency of the developed correction technique, the compensation errors originated from the correction algorithm and the machined characteristics of cylinder surface are evaluated from the geometrical considerations and the statistical techniques. Based upon the evaluation results, the maximum compensation error is estimated for the orientation of cylinder and the optimum correction technique is derived.

  • The use of infrared range-finder sensor as the environment recognition system for mobile robot have the advantage of low sensing cost compared with the use of other vision sensor such as laser finder CCD camera. However, it is not easy to find the previous works on the use of infrared range-finder sensor for a mobile robot because of the non-linear characteristic of that. This paper describes the error due to non-linearity of a sensor and the correction of it using neural network. The neural network consists of multi-layer perception and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is applied to learning it. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified from experiment.

  • To improve performance over noisy wireless channels, mobile wireless networks employ forward error correction(FEC) techniques. The performance of static FEC algorithms, however, degrades by poorly matching the overhead of their correction code to the degree of the fluctuating underlying channel error. This paper proposes an adaptive FEC technique called FECA(FEC-level Adaptation), which dynamically tunes FEC strength to the currently estimated channel error rate at the data link layer. FECA is suitable for wireless networks whose error rate is high and slowly changing compared to the round-trip time between two communicating nodes. One such example network would be a sensor network in which the average bit error rate is higher than $10^{-6}$ and the detected error rate at one time lasts a few hundred milliseconds on average. Our experiments show that FECA performs 15% in simulations with theoretically modeled wireless channels and in trace-driven simulations based on the data collected from real sensor networks better than any other static FEC algorithms.

  • For better performance over a noisy channel, mobile wireless networks transmit packets with forward error correction (FEC) code to recover corrupt bits without retransmission. The static determination of the FEC code size, however, degrades their performance since the evaluation of the underlying channel state is hardly accurate and even widely varied. Our measurements over a wireless sensor network, for example, show that the average bit error rate (BER) per second or per minute continuously changes from 0 up to $10^{-3}$. Under this environment, wireless networks waste their bandwidth since they can't deterministically select the appropriate size of FEC code matching to the fluctuating channel BER. This paper proposes an adaptive FEC technique called adaptive FEC code control (AFECCC), which dynamically tunes the amount of FEC code per packet based on the arrival of acknowledgement packets without any specific information such as signal to noise ratio (SNR) or BER from receivers. Our simulation experiments indicate that AFECCC performs better than any static FEC algorithm and some conventional dynamic hybrid FEC/ARQ algorithms when wireless channels are modeled with two-state Markov chain, chaotic map, and traces collected from real sensor networks. Finally, AFECCC implemented in sensor motes achieves better performance than any static FEC algorithm.

  • WSN acts as an effective tool for tracking the large scale environments. In such environment, the battery life of the sensor networks is limited due to collection of the data, usage of sensing, computation and communication. To resolve this, a mobile robot is presented to identify the data present in the partitioned sensor networks and passed onto the sink. In novel data collection algorithm, the performance of the data collecting operation is reduced because mobile robot can be used only within the limited range. To enhance the data collection in a changing environment, Non Linear Error Identifier (NLEI) algorithm has been developed and presented in this paper to configure the robot by means of error models which are non-linear. Experimental evaluation has been conducted to estimate the performance of the proposed NLEI and it has been observed that the proposed NLEI algorithm increases the error correction rate upto 42% and efficiency upto 60%.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for the correction of major radiometric errors shown in MEIS (Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System) images on board KITSAT-3. MEIS images contain various radiometric errors as also shown in the images obtained from other remote sensing sensors. This paper introduces the two major radiometric error sources shown in MEIS images and the corresponding correction algorithm. The proposed algorithm was integrated to an operational preprocessing software and validated by applying the algorithm to several tens of MEIS images. This algorithm will therefore applied operationally to raw MEIS images before they are distributed to users.

  • This paper proposes a 10-b SAR ADC. To increase the conversion speed and reduce the power consumption and area, redundant cycles were implemented digitally in a capacitor DAC. The capacitor DAC algorithm was straightforward switching, which included digital error correction steps. A prototype ADC was implemented in CMOS $0.18-{\mu}m$ technology. This structure consumed $140{\mu}W$ and achieved 59.4-dB SNDR at 1.25MS/s under a 1.8-V supply. The figure of merit (FOM) was 140fJ/conversion-step.

  • A GPS sensor is widely used in many areas such as navigation, or air traffic control. Particularly, the car navigation system is equipped with GPS sensor for locational information. However, when a car goes through a tunnel, forest, or built-up area, GPS receiver cannot get the enough number of satellite signals. In these situations, a GPS receiver does not reliably work. A GPS error can be formulated by sum of bias error and sensor noise. The bias error is generated by the geometric arrangement of satellites and sensor noise error is generated by the corrupted signal noise of receiver. To enhance GPS sensor accuracy, these two kinds of errors have to be removed. In this research, we make the road database which includes Road Database File (RDF). RDF includes road information such as road connection, road condition, coordinates of roads, lanes, and stop lines. Among the information, we use the stop line coordinates as a feature point to correct the GPS bias error. If the relative distance and angle of a stop line from a car are detected and the detected stop line can be associated with one of the stop lines in the database, we can measure the bias error and correct the car's location. To remove the other GPS error, sensor noise, the Kalman filter algorithm is used. Additionally, using the RDF, we can get the information of the road where the car belongs. It can be used to help the GPS correction algorithm or to give useful information to users.

  • This paper proposes a numerical method based on domain decomposition to find approximate solutions for one-dimensional convection-diffusion equations with Neumann boundary conditions. First, the equations are transformed into convection-diffusion equations with Dirichlet conditions. Second, the author introduces the Prediction/Correction Domain Decomposition (PCDD) method and estimates errors for the interface prediction scheme, interior scheme, and correction scheme using known error estimations. Finally, the author compares the PCDD algorithm with the fully explicit scheme (FES) and the fully implicit scheme (FIS) using three examples. In comparison to FES and FIS, the proposed PCDD algorithm demonstrates good results.
