Admitting the Renzulli's enrichment triad model and three dmensional scienctific factors as context, process and content, the snow ball program was explored. Identification methods and science education cumculum of enrichment learning for the science gifted were presented. In the snow ball program, it was presented that each factor of three dimensional scienctific factors was focused in the different ways due to the levels or the ages of students. • The purpose of this study is to verify empirically whether or not the linguistically creative problem-solving ability progress by developing and applying an enrichment learning program for the verbally gifted elementary school students. The total number of the verbally gifted students who participated in this study were 60 children. Half of them were subjects for evaluating the appropriateness of the enrichment learning program and the verbally creative problem-solving ability test developed by the researcher. The other half were divided into three groups for applying the teaching materials by Korean Educational Development Institute, the enrichment learning program by the present researcher, and the textbook enrichment program. The data were analyzed by the statistical method of repeated measures ANOVA. The results were as follows: First, the enrichment learning program developed by this researcher has greatly contributed to the advancement of verbally creative problem-solving ability. The program was especially effective in reading and writing, but not in speaking. second, the sub-category of reading includes factual, inferential·critical, and imaginary understanding. Among them, factual and imaginary understanding had not significantly advanced, while inferential·critical understanding had significant progression. Third, it was found that both logical and creative expression did not improve significantly by the enrichment learning program developed by the present researcher. Speaking is difficult to instruct. In conclusion, it was found that the systematic enrichment learning program was effective in developing language skills of the verbally gifted elementary school children. It was also proved to be more effective to teach them reading and writing together in everyday life. Also, it was turned out that continuous development of the enrichment learning program for the verbally gifted students is needed.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of the enrichment program for the gifted on gifted childrens development of the logical thinking and science process skills. The enrichment program consists of 200 enrichment courses in language arts, mathematics, sciences, social sciences and thinking for children at the age of 30 months to Grade 8. Enrichment programs are characterized as process-oriented, student-choice available, activities-oriented, open-ended, and interdisciplined. Subjects were 123 gifted children from Grade 1 to 3 at the Korean Academy of Gifted Education (KAGE), whose IQ scores were above 130 at their entry point to KAGE. Children were divided into two groups depending the duration of the program participation. Older Group participated in the program for longer than 13 months, while Newer Group did for shorter than 12 months. Mean of IQs of the two groups were not significantly different. They were tested on Logical Thinking Test and Integrated Process Skills Test revised by KEDI into Korean version in 1991. Descriptive statistics were calculated and group differences were analyzed with t-test, and scheffe test. The main finding were as follows: There were not significant differences between gender. Children in higher grades showed higher level of development. Older groups showed significantly higher level of logical thinking level of development. Older group showed significantly higher level of logical thinking and process skills than the Newer group inspite of the similar IQ levels to each other. The longer the gifted child participate in the enrichment program, the higher the development of childrens thinking skills.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a social competence enrichment program for institutionalized children in early childhood. The program was developed to enhance institutionalized children's social competence. The program consists of sixteen 30-minute sessions. 19 institutionalized children (11 boys and 8 girls) participated in this program. The effect of this program was evaluated by institutionalized preschool children's emotional knowledge and interpersonal problem solving strategy. Assessment of emotional knowledge consists of identification and situation task. Interpersonal problem solving strategy includes forceful, prosocial, and manipulative strategy. Results showed that there was a significant experimental effect for emotional knowledge. Experimental children showed higher scores of emotional knowledge than control children. Also, there was a significant experimental effect for prosocial and forceful strategy. Experimental children showed higher ratio of prosocial strategy and lower ratio of forceful strategy than control children. The results of program evaluation revealed that this program was helpful for promoting institutionalized children's social competence.

  • Purpose: As population of elderly people continues to grow, successful aging has risen to the top of the nursing science agenda. The successful aging includes maintenance of the cognitive and physical functions, as well as emotional well-beings. This study was carried out to evaluate effects of the environmental enrichments on cognition of institutionalized elderly. Method: The population was selected among the elderly aging over 65 residing at two of institutions. A quasi experimental design was used with non-equivalent control group. Study subjects were thirteen for each group. For the experimental group, physical, social and symbolic environmental enrichment program was provided for six weeks. The data were analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA and repeated measure ANCOVA using SPSS Win 11.0. Result: Compared to control group, the experimental group showed a significant difference on DSF(F=3.29, p=.046), and TMTA(F=4.76, p=.013) of cognitive function, and depression (F=5.56, p=.007) of emotional distress after 1 and 12 weeks of environmental enrichment program. Conclusion: Findings indicate that physical, social, and symbolic environmental enrichment was effective to partially prevent from cognitive decline, and to decrease emotional distress of elderly. As a nursing intervention, environmental enrichment program for elderly should be expanded for nursing practice to promote healthy aging and to offer support to the growing population of elderly. Further research should be conducted to evaluate the effect on the community elderly.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an environmental enrichment program on barrier, benefit, confidence, and compliance of breast self-examination in women at 3 months after instruction. Methods: Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was conducted among 62 healthy women. Data were collected through the self-reported questionnaires from December 2008 to March 2009. Women were assigned to one of two treatment groups: (a) no-support of environmental enrichment with the instruction control group; (b) the support of environmental enrichment with the instruction experimental group. All women received the same instruction on breast self-examination once a week for two weeks. Data were analyzed with paired t-test, McNemar test and ANCOVAs of controlling for age run using SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: The experimental group was significantly lower than control group on perceived barrier (F=5.91, p=.02) and higher than control group on compliance of breast self-examination (F=4.57, p=.04) after environmental enrichment program. However the environmental enrichment program did not make significant differences on benefit (F=0.01, p=.91) and confidence (F=0.77, p=.38). Conclusion: Findings suggest that the environmental enrichment should be needed to support women's breast self-examination and expanded for compliance of breast self-examination to promote the secondary prevention of women breast cancer.
