  • The design of an axial piston pump for electro-hydrostatic transmission systems requires accurate information where and how much the internal friction and flow losses are produced. This study is particularly focused on the friction losses of a bent-axis type hydraulic piston pump, aiming at finding out which design factors influence its torque efficiency most significantly. To this end, the friction coefficients of the pump parts such as piston heads, spherical joints, shaft bearings, and valve plate were experimentally identified by a specially constructed tribometer. Applying the experimental data to the equations of motion for pistons as well as to the theoretical friction models for the pump parts, the friction torques produced by them were computed. The accuracy of the computed results was confirmed by the comparison with the practical input torque of the pump. In this paper, it is shown that the viscous friction forces on the valve plate and input shaft bearing are the primary source of the friction losses of the bent-axis type pump, while the friction forces and moments on the piston are of little significance.

  • The research described in this paper investigates the seismic behaviour of lightly reinforced concrete (RC) bearing sandwich panels, heavily conditioned by shear deformation. A numerical model has been prepared, within an open source finite element (FE) platform, to simulate the experimental response of this emerging structural system, whose squat-type geometry affects performance and failure mode. Calibration of this equivalent mechanical model, consisting of a group of regularly spaced vertical elements in combination with a layer of nonlinear springs, which represent the cyclic behaviour of concrete and steel, has been conducted by means of a series of pseudo-static cyclic tests performed on single full-scale prototypes with or without openings. Both cantilevered and fixed-end shear walls have been analyzed. After validation, this numerical procedure, including cyclic-related mechanisms, such as buckling and subsequent slippage of reinforcing re-bars, as well as concrete crushing at the base of the wall, has been used to assess the capacity of two- and three-dimensional low- to mid-rise box-type buildings and, hence, to estimate their strength reduction factors, on the basis of conventional pushover analyses.

  • Aiming at widely used high-pier bridges in Sichuan-Tibet Railway, this paper presents an investigation to design and evaluate the seismic vibration reduction effects of several measures, including viscous damper (VD), friction pendulum bearing (FPB), and tuned mass damper (TMD). Primarily, according to the detailed introduction of the concerned bridge structure, dynamic models of high-pier bridges with different seismic vibration reduction (SVR) measures are established. Further, the designs for these SVR measures are performed, and the optimal parameters of these measures are investigated. On this basis, the vibration reduction effects of these measures are analyzed and assessed subject to actual earthquake excitations in Wenchuan Earthquake (M=8.0), and the most appropriate SVR measure for high-pier bridges in Sichuan-Tibet Railway is determined at the end of the work. Results show that the height of pier does not obviously affect the performances of the concerned SVR measures. Comprehensively considering the vibration absorption performance, installation and maintenance of all the employed measures in this paper, TMD is the best one to absorb vibrations induced by earthquakes.

  • Four microalloyed steels containing B were investigated in terms of hardenability, mechanical properties and microstructure depending upon the cooling rates in order to develop the steel grade for the cold forged fasners. The alloy with the largest DI value among 4 alloys, which contains $0.12\%\;C,\;1.54\%\;Mn,\;0.65\%\;Cr,\;0.11\%V,\;0.040\%Ti\;and\;0.0033\%B$, showed the larest shift to the right hand side in the TTT diagram, implying the wide allowable cooling rate range subsequent to hot rolling in long bar processing, Mechanical tests indicated that yield strength are dependent upon the DI value in water quenched specimens but other properties showed almost the same values. In the same grade of steel, the increase in cooling rates causes the decrease in elongation but the increase in strength, reduction of area and Charpy impact values. Microstructural examination in steel grade with the larest DI values revealed martensitic structure In the water quenched state, a mixture of martensite and bainite in the oil quenched, and ferrite + pearlite in the air cooled and the forced air cooled but the latter showed finer microstructure.

  • The infill walls, whose contribution to the earthquake resistance of a structure is generally ignored due to their limited lateral rigidities, constitute a part of the lateral load bearing system of an RC frame structure. A common method for improving the earthquake behavior of RC frame structures is increasing the contribution of the infill walls to the overall lateral rigidity by strengthening them through different techniques. The present study investigates the influence of externally bonded perforated steel plates on the load capacities, rigidities, and ductilities of hollow brick infill walls. For this purpose, a reference (unstrengthened) and twelve strengthened specimens were subjected to monotonic diagonal compression. The experiments indicated that the spacing of the bolts, connecting the plates to the wall, have a more profound effect on the behavior of a brick wall compared to the thickness of the strengthening plates. Furthermore, an increase in the plate thickness was shown to result in a considerable improvement in the behavior of the wall only if the plates are connected to the wall with closely-spaced bolts. This strengthening technique was found to increase the energy absorption capacities of the walls between 4 and 14 times the capacity of the reference wall. The strengthened walls reached ultimate loads 30-160% greater than the reference wall and all strengthened walls remained intact till the end of the test.

  • This paper presents a faults diagnosis technique of induction motors based on a neural network. Only stator current is measured, transformed by using FFT and normalized for the training. Healthy, bearing fault, stator fault and rotor end-ring fault motors are prepared to obtain the learning data and diagnose the several faults. For more effective diagnosis, the load rate is changed by 100%, 60%, 30% of full load and the obtained are applied to the teaming process. The experimental results show the proposed method is very detectable and applicable to the real diagnosis system.

  • Between June 1989 and may 2004 Ipsilateral vascularized fibular transposition was performed on nine patients with segmental tibial defects combined with infection following trauma. Ipsilateral vascularized fibular graft was performed on two or three stage according to the degree of infection. Initially free vascular pedicled graft was done followed by ipsilateral vascularized fibular graft. Type of free flap used is scapular free flap 3 cases, latissimus dorsi free flap 5 cases and dorsalis pedis flap 1 cases. The patients were followed for an average of 3.4 years. the average time to union was 6.7 months, and in all patients the graft healed in spite of complication. Complication was free flap venous thrombosis in 1 cases, persistent infection in 1 cases, delayed bony union at the distal end of fibular graft in 2 cases. The results showed that more faster bony union was seen in which cases firmly internally fixated and more faster hypertrophy of graft in which cases was permitted to ambulate on early weight bearing and more faster healing in which cases debrided more meticulously. Reconstruction of tibia defect with free flap followed by Ipsilateral fibular transposition is a useful and safe method to avoid the potential risk of infection for patients with tibial large bone defect and soft tissue defect associated with infection.

  • We investigated the toxicity of zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel to abalone Haliotis discus hannai via changes in the gill and hepatopancreas using histological and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Experimental groups were composed of one control and four exposure conditions (direct or indirect exposure to zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel). In the control group, aluminum exposure groups (direct and indirect), and indirect zinc exposure group, abalone mortality was not observed until the end of the experiment, and no histopathological changes were observed in the gill and hepatopancreas. However, the direct zinc exposure group exhibited 100% mortality. Ultrastructural analysis of the cytoplasm of ciliated and microvilli-bearing epithelial cells from gill filaments revealed electron-dense vesicles near the cell membrane and disruption of the nuclear membrane. We also observed swollen mitochondria and a loss of mitochondrial cristae. The hepatopancreas showed similar changes, and we detected highly electron-dense particles within the vesicles. These results suggest that abalone exposed directly to zinc hot-dip galvanized sheet steel experience acute toxicity, causing damage to cell organelles in the gill and hepatopancreas and, finally, inducing mortality.

  • A severe pink mold rot on matured melon fruits occurred under a glass tunnel cultivation in Chinju at Kyeongasngnam-do Agricultural Research and Extention Services on May of 1998. Basal portion of the fruits toward blossom end was preferably infected and colonized by the fungus. The causal fungus consistently isolated from the lesions was identified as Trichothecium roseum based on following mycological characteristics. Conidia were hyaline or brightly colored, 2-celled, ovoid or elipsoid, characteristically held together zi-zag chains. Conidiophore was long, slender, simple, septate, bearing conidia-meristem arthrospores-apically, singly when young and successively by slight growth of conidiphore apex. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth and conidial germination was recorded at 20~$25^{\circ}C$. However, over 48% of the fungal conidia were germinated at 15$^{\circ}C$ and mycelial growth was only slightly slower than $25^{\circ}C$. The temperature profiles and high humidity available during the cultivation were considered favorable for the pathogen as showing 22% infection rate on matured melon fruits cv. Saros. This is the first report of pink mold rot of melon caused by T. roseum in Korea.
