  • Purpose: This study of this study was to identify factors influencing the burden of main family caregivers who take care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases. Methods: This was conducted as descriptive research and data were collected from 255 main family caregivers who were taking care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases from 4 hospitals in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. Stepwise-multiple regression was used to identify the influencing factors of burden felt. Results: As the score of burden felt by the main family, economic, social, physical, interdependent and emotional burdens were high in order. Factors influencing burden felt by main family care givers taking care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases were changed relation with patient after hospitalization, daily life ability, marital status, education and family caregiver's personality (explanatory power of 24.6%). Family caregivers felt a heavier burden when their relation with the patient was changed negatively or when the patient's activity of daily living was low. Conclusion: Based on these results, we need to develop coping measures and interventional programs for reducing the burden felt by the main family caregivers of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases.

  • The study attempts to explore factors which affect life satisfaction of the elderly, and thereby to identify the most efficient strategy to enhance their happiness and satisfaction with life by means of a family support system. Previous research suggests that the family is the main origin from which emotional and ecionomic satisfacton of the aged evolves, and satisfaction is facilitated by societal assistance for the family to financially support old persons. These theoretical antecedents are incorporated into a causal model for empirical verificatio. To this end, interviews were conducted in Seoul with 300 individuals who are 60 years old or over. The major findings of this study support the theoretical assertions of previous studies. They are summarized as follows : 1. Family solidarity is highly correlated with life satisfaction of the elderly. 2. Family solidarity is raised by the intensity of their social association, satisfaction with housing, and financial resources. 3. Eduation, income and marital status as exogenous variables do not directly affect life satisfaction and family solidarity, despite their strong overall correlation. Casual effects of each variable are linked to family solidarity and then to life satisfaction through a family support system for the elderly.

  • Using data from the 2015 Korea Welfare Panel Study, we examined the predictors of psychological well-being (life satisfaction and depression) of single elderly people living alone across development stages (young-old, mid-old, and old-old) and suggested implications for elderly policy. For this purpose, we selected 1,364 elderly people who lived alone but preserved their family relationships, and were 65 years of age or older. Separate analyses were conducted for the three groups of single elderly people living alone. Overall, the psychological well-being of single elderly people living alone was higher than moderate level, and they were generally satisfied with their everyday lives and less depressed. However, there were group differences: the young-old group was more satisfied than the old-old group with in their everyday lives and less depressed than the mid-old and old-old groups. In the young-old group, life satisfaction was significantly associated with subjective health, non-physical conflict with family, disposal income, house ownership, dietary deficiency, cost of living, and public pension. In addition, depression was significantly associated with subjective health, non-physical conflict with family, dietary deficiency, and physical conflict with family. In the mid-old group, life satisfaction was significantly associated with subjective health, housing non-physical conflict with family, disposal income, and dietary deficiency. Depression was significantly associated with subjective health, housing deficiency. In the old-old group, life satisfaction was significantly associated with subjective health and non-physical conflict with family. Depression was significantly associated with subjective health. Therefore, 'health'and 'family'are important key concepts to consider when making elderly policy.

From the working types, self-employed/employer and unpaid family worker, moderate the indirect effect of self-esteem on depression through family relations satisfaction. Conclusions: In practical intervention of elderly depression reduction, efforts to increase family relations satisfaction is effective when it is difficult to us address satisfaction. • The study analyzed the characteristics of the daily life and the living arrangements use of the elderly with literature review after the modernization period based on the daily life perspectives. The changes in the ideology, social system, and family system, which influenced the society and families, also affected the status of the elderly and their daily lives. Consequently, they had been facing conflicts, acceptance, and internal differentiations. The characteristics of the changes in the daily lives of the elderly in different periods were as follows. The contents were written from three different perspectives, phenomenological, symbolic interaction, and Marxist. During the modernization period, the family system and the hierarchy within a family had been reformed. However, the elderly were still considered as the symbolic leader and the respected figure of the family. From a phenomenological perspective, elderlies teach the next generations and influence the family's lives. On the other hand, from a perspective of symbolic interactions, spatial adjustment behaviors toward the largest room between the elderly and the next generation were detected. The actual authority was given to the next generation. However, the elderly were still treated as the symbolic authority. Yet, as the society became more industrialized, conflicts aroused about the support of the elderly. Those, who were neglected from the family, even spent their daily time at the elderly center or the community center. The daily lives from the Marxist perspectives suggested that modernization caused the young generations, who were well-educated and had financial powers, to have initiatives. The role of the elderly was reduced and they became negligible people, who spend meaningless daily lives. The interested the Third Ages is a new perspective on the elderly, who were neglected from the industrialized society. From a phenomenological perspective, the Third Ages are the generations that seek and demand for new housing.

Data were collected through structured questionnaires from July 20 to September 30, 2015. The SPSS/WIN program was used for data analysis. Results: The HRQoL of the elderly living alone was much lower than the other groups. The most influential factors on the HRQoL include self-rated health and depressive symptoms in all three groups. Social activities and skipping meals were associated with the HRQoL of the elderly living alone and living with their spouses, while marital status, number of chronic disease, and instrumental activities of daily living were associated with the HRQoL of the elderly living with their family. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of successful ageing and the influencing factors focusing on social support from family and friends to improve elderly's quality of life. The 300 respondents, all participants in programs at facilities for the elderly, were interviewed via a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results are as follows. First, the average score for successful ageing among the participants was above average. Second, the level of successful ageing varied according to income and religion. Third, the common variables affecting active or emotionally successful ageing were support from friends, subjective health conditions, and gender. It is suggested that the community should be informed of the importance of support from family through educational programs, as the elderly still want the support of family despite family's reduced role.

  • This research has attempted to investigate the perception of elderly women on self esteem, psychological well-being and the moderating effect of family support on self esteem and psychological well-being. Two-hundred and six of elderly women who used senior welfare centers had been participating in the research, and their questionnaires had been filled out during personal interviews. The collected data had been analysed by using SPSS Win 15.0 and the results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the level of self-esteem perceived by elderly women was a little bit higher than middle level and the level of psychological well-being appeared to be moderate. Secondly, it was found that the self esteem of elderly women affected psychological well-being and that the higher the participants perceived self esteem, the higher the level of psychological well-being. Thirdly, family support appeared to have a moderating effect in relation to self esteem and psychological well-being. As it were, the higher the perception level of elderly women was, the higher impact of their self esteem on their psychological well-being. Therefore, there needs to be a re-consideration of the importance of family support which is being weakened due to family nuclearization as well as mechanisms for improving family support.
