This paper presents a summary of the Scientific Research Training (SRT) in Liaocheng Teachers University, which is a representative of normal universities and teachers' colleges in China. There is a survey on the situation of SRT in China systematically and historically. Tentative ideas about SRT in future are targeted at the teachers and heads of departments in China.
In the present paper we highlight the importance and need of professional development of mathematics teachers at all levels. The pre-service professional development and technology Proficiency of mathematics teachers are discussed in details. New strategies for professional development are enlisted for discussion and a list of references is also given in the end.
The purpose of this study is to analyze and present what aspects of the concept of function prospective mathematics secondary teachers emphasize when designing a class that introduces the concept of function using curriculum and textbooks. For this purpose, virtual instruction and reflections on virtual instruction were analyzed. The results are as follows. The prospective mathematics secondary teachers consider and introduce the concepts of function as correspondences and processes. Their conception of function was consistently observed during virtual instruction and reflections on virtual instruction. The prospective mathematics secondary teachers' conception of function was closely related to the form of expressing functions. These results provi e implications for prospective mathematics secondary teachers' education for introducing the concept of function based on the dependent relation between variables presented in the 2015 revision of the national mathematics curriculum.
This study investigated the prospective teacher's noticing of students' mathematical thinking from the perspective of how the prospective teacher pays attention to, interprets, and responds to the student's responses related to variables. The prospective teachers were asked to infer the students' thinking from the variables related to the tasks and suggest feedback accordingly. An analysis of the responses of 26 prospective teachers showed that it was not easy for prospective teachers to pay attention to the misconception of variables and that some of them did not make proper interpretations. Most prospective teachers who did not attend and interpret were found to have failed to provide an appropriate response due to a lack of overall understanding of variables. even though prospective teachers who did proper attend and interpret were found to have failed to respond appropriately due to a lack of empirical knowledge, even with proper attention and interpretation.
In this study, I investigated prospective mathematics teachers' perceptions of activities using Wax-paper, a hands-on material (manipulatives), and GeoGebra, a technological tool, in teaching quadratic curves. Twenty prospective mathematics teachers in the Mathematics Education Department of a local university participated in a survey on their perception of the use of hands-on materials and technological tools in teaching quadratic curves. According to the results of this study, prospective mathematics teachers generally preferred the use of technological tools for learning and teaching quadratic curves. Additionally, mathematics teachers thought that the tool helped students develop intuitive thinking through visualizing quadratic curves, enabling the exploration of various mathematical properties, assisting the comprehension of various concepts, and increasing students' interest levels. However, they were concerned about the immature use of technological tools by students or teachers, and recognized that the advantages and disadvantages of using hands-on material and technological tools were complementary. Based on these findings, it is suggested that hands-on material and technological tools should be used complementally in mathematics classes, and the development and dissemination of class materials that are not affected by students' or teachers' ability to use technological tools is important.
This study analyzed the perception of prospective elementary school teachers in relation to using the history of Korean mathematics. The results of this study showed that the pre-service teachers realized using the history of Korean mathematics more importantly than the history of mathematics. They thought that the contents of the history of Korean mathematics should be increased in mathematics education and pre-service teacher education. The participation experience in teacher education about the history of Korean mathematics had a positive effect on the perception of pre-service teachers. Finally, this paper asserted that teacher education is the key to the teacher perception on and using of the history of Korean mathematics.
When taught the precise definition of ${\pi}$, students may be simply asked to memorize its approximate value without developing a rigorous understanding of the underlying reason of why it is a constant. Measuring the circumferences and diameters of various circles and calculating their ratios might just represent an attempt to verify that ${\pi}$ has an approximate value of 3.14, and will not necessarily result in an adequate understanding about the constant nor formally proves that it is a constant. In this study, we aim to investigate prospective teachers' conceptual understanding of ${\pi}$, and as a constant and whether they can provide a proof of its constant property. The findings show that prospective teachers lack a holistic understanding of the constant nature of ${\pi}$, and reveal how they teach students about this property in an inappropriate approach through a proving activity. We conclude our findings with a suggestion on how to improve the situation.
This study analyzed the characteristics of prospective teachers' Horizon Content Knowledge(HCK) related to understandings of an inverse function symbol. This study aimed to deduce implications of developing HCK in terms of the means which would enhance mathematics teachers' professional development. In order to achieve the aim, this study identified features of HCK by examining the previous literature on HCK, which has conformed Ball & Bass(2009) and exploring the research in AMT, including Zazkis & Leikin(2010) which has emphasized cultivating AMT through university mathematics education. In addition, a questionnaire was developed regarding the features of HCK and taken by 57 prospective teachers. By analyzing the data obtained from the written responses the participants presented, this study delineated the specific characteristics of the teachers' HCK with regard to an inverse function symbol. Additionally, several issues in the teacher education for improving HCK were discussed, and the results of this research could inspire designing and implementing a teacher education program relevant to HCK.
This study examined the potential teaching strategies of prospective elementary teachers and their perceptions of the procedural/conceptual nature of examples. Fifty-four prospective teachers participated in this study, engaging in two-phase tasks. Analysis of data indicated that: (a) Overall, the participants' perceptions were geared toward putting emphasis on conceptual understanding rather than procedural understanding; but (b) Generally, procedure-oriented strategies were more frequently incorporated in participants' potential teaching plans. This implied that participants' preconceived ideas regarding math examples were not always reliable indicators of their potential teaching strategies. Implications and suggestions for mathematics teacher preparation are discussed.
We analyzed errors committed by Korean prospective elementary teachers in finding and interpreting quotient and remainder within measurement division of fractions. 65 prospective elementary teachers were participated in this study. They solved a word problem about measurement division of fractions. We analyzed solutions of all participants, and interviewed 5 participants of them. The results reveal many of these prospective teachers could not tell what fractional part of division result means. Thses results suggest that teacher preparation program should emphasize interpreting calculation results within given situations.
