  • This paper investigates the dynamic response of structures during earthquakes and provides a clear understanding of soil-structure interaction phenomena. It analyses various parameters, comprising ground shear wave velocity and structure properties. The effect of soil impedance function form on the structural response of the system through the use of springs and dashpots with two frequency cases: independent and dependent frequencies. The superstructure and the ground were modeled linearly. Using the substructure method, two different approaches are used in this study. The first is an analytical formulation based on the dynamic equilibrium of the soil-structure system modeled by an analog model with three degrees of freedom. The second is a numerical analysis generated with 2D finite element modeling using ABAQUS software. The superstructure is represented as a SDOF system in all the SSI models assessed. This analysis establishes the key parameters affecting the soil-structure interaction and their effects. The different results obtained from the analysis are compared for each studied case (frequency-independent and frequency-dependent impedance functions). The achieved results confirm the sensitivity of buildings to soil-structure interaction and highlight the various factors and effects, such as soil and structure properties, specifically the shear wave velocity, the height and mass of the structure. Excitation frequency, and the foundation anchoring height, also has a significant impact on the fundamental parameters and the response of the coupled system at the same time. On the other hand, it have been demonstrated that the impedance function forms play a critical role in the accurate evaluation of structural behavior during seismic excitation. As a result, the evaluation of SSI effects on structural response must take into account the dynamic properties of the structure and soil accordingly.

  • For a given structural geometry, the stiffness and damping parameters of the soil and the dynamic response of the structure may change in the face of an equivalent linear soil behavior caused by a strong earthquake. Therefore, the influence of equivalent linear soil behavior on the impedance functions form and the seismic response of the soil-structure system has been investigated. Through the substructure method, the seismic response of the selected structure was obtained by an analytical formulation based on the dynamic equilibrium of the soil-structure system modeled by an analog model with three degrees of freedom. Also, the dynamic response of the soil-structure system for a nonlinear soil behavior and for the two types of impedance function forms was also analyzed by 2D finite element modeling using ABAQUS software. The numerical results were compared with those of the analytical solution. After the investigation, the effect of soil nonlinearity clearly showed the critical role of soil stiffness loss under strong shaking, which is more complex than the linear elastic soil behavior, where the energy dissipation depends on the seismic motion amplitude and its frequency, the impedance function types, the shear modulus reduction and the damping increase. Excellent agreement between finite element analysis and analytical results has been obtained due to the reasonable representation of the model.

  • In this study, the severity of damage in tendon anchorage caused by the loss of tendon forces is quantitatively identified by using the PZT interface-based impedance monitoring technique. Firstly, a 2-DOF impedance model is newly designed to represent coupled dynamic responses of PZT interface-host structure. Secondly, the 2-DOF impedance model is adopted for the tendon anchorage system. A prototype of PZT interface is designed for the impedance monitoring. Then impedance signatures are experimentally measured from a laboratory-scale tendon anchorage structure with various tendon forces. Finally, damage severities of the tendon anchorage induced by the variation of tendon forces are quantitatively identified from the phase-by-phase model updating process, from which the change in impedance signatures is correlated to the change in structural properties.

  • This paper introduces attempts to obtain the'representative'characteristics of the apparent mass and mechanical impedance of seated Korean subjects under vertical vibration. Individual responses of the apparent mass and driving-point mechanical impedance obtained from forty-one Korean subjects are illustrated. Four kinds of vibration levels and three different sitting postures are selected to collect the responses of each subject. Those individual responses are used to estimate the 'mean' mechanical impedance, which may be expected to be a representative model to Korean subjects. Several interesting features of the estimated mechanical impedance are suggested and compared to those of ISO 5982.

  • Numerous studies have repeatedly demonstrated the efficiency of using skirts to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce settlement of shallow foundations subjected to static loads. However, no efforts have been made to study the efficiency of using these skirts to reduce settlement produced by machine vibration, although machines are very sensitive to settlement and the foundations of these machines should be designed properly to ensure that the settlement produced due to machine vibration is very small. This research has been conducted to investigate the efficiency of using skirts as a technique to reduce the settlement of a strip foundation subjected to machine vibration. A two-dimensional finite element model has been developed, validated, and employed to achieve the aim of the study. The results of the analyses showed that the use of skirts reduces the settlement produced due to machine vibration. However, the percentage decrease of the settlement is remarkably influenced by the density of the soil and the frequency of vibration, where it rises as the frequency of vibration increases and declines as the soil density rises. It was also found that increasing skirt length increases the percentage decrease of the settlement. Importantly, the results obtained from the analyses have been utilized to derive new dynamic impedance values that implicitly consider the presence of skirts. Finally, novel design equations of dynamic impedance that implicitly account to the effect of the skirts have been derived and validated utilizing a new intelligent data driven method. These new equations can be used in future designs of skirted strip foundations subjected to machine vibration.

  • Impedance-based damage detection method has been known as an innovative tool with various successful implementations for structural health monitoring of civil structures. To monitor the local critical area of a structure, the impedance-based method utilizes the high-frequency impedance responses sensed by piezoelectric sensors as the local dynamic features. In this paper, current advances and future challenges of the impedance-based structural health monitoring are presented. Firstly, theoretical background of the impedance-based method is outlined. Next, an overview is given to recent advances in the wireless impedance sensor nodes, the interfacial impedance sensing devices, and the temperature-effect compensation algorithms. Various research works on these topics are reviewed to share up-to-date information on research activities and implementations of the impedance-based technique. Finally, future research challenges of the technique are discussed including the applicability of wireless sensing technology, the predetermination of effective frequency bands, the sensing region of impedance responses, the robust compensation of noise and temperature effects, the quantification of damage severity, and long-term durability of sensors.

  • Support dynamics are often important in rotordynamic analyses. It may well happen in real situation of machines such as centrifugal pumps or turbines operating on flexible structure. This paper presents the applications of the impedance coupling method and the improved rotor model for including the support effects on the interaction with the rotor. The impedance coupling techniques are based on the FRFs of each substructure. Its dynamic stiffness matrix can be assembled to generate the system matrix, which satisfy the constraint conditions in the connection coordinates. And, the improved rotor uses the simplified spring-mass models as support properties. The equivalent support models are directly incorporated into the finite element rotor model. To verify the suggested analytical procedures, the results are compared to those of the pump system.

  • Viscoelastic materials shows the characteristics of elasticity and viscosity. Unlike metals which show negligible damping value, the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials like rubber mounts is very important in the analysis of the dynamic system. So there has been a great interest in measuring the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials. There are two kinds of methods which the damping characteristics can be measured. One is the resonant method where loss factor can be measured only in the resonant frequency. The other is the nonresonant method which is characterized by the impedance method are introduced. The impedance test results, the loss factor by the impedance method are compared to the results of the resonant method and recommendations in the experimental setup are suggested.

  • This paper presents a robust impedance control of high-DOF robot based on disturbance observer(DOB). A novel DOB is derived by considering the residual disturbance caused by the difference between actual disturbance and disturbance decoupling input which utilizes the estimated disturbance. It focuses on the elimination of the residual disturbance and improvement of the control performance as well as the good estimation of disturbances. In the control of high-DOF robot, numerical dynamic model, which is conducted by a software based on dynamics, is utilized because the analytical model of high-DOF robot is difficult to be obtained. The simulation of high-DOF robot with numerical dynamic model is provided to verify the performance of the proposed controller.
