The transient flow fields in a direct injection engine was analyzed by using the STAR-CD CFD code doting the intake/compression processes. The analyses were focused on the computation grid generation by using the IC3M code which is a pre-developed and especially well adapted for the analyses of internal combustion engine. The results showed that the used grid generation technique was well suited for the flow analyses on any internal combustion engine.

Recently new engine system is being required to cope with intensive emission restriction . For this reason, GDI(Gasoline direct injection) engine system which can satisfy both as good fuel economy as diesel engine and the performance to surpass PFI gasoline engine is being development . Since fuel injection system plays a significant role in GDI engine performance, the investigation of the spray characteristics injected from GDI injector above all is indispensable for GDI system development. In this study , spray developing shape was visualized using laser sheet with Nd : YAG laser and atomization characteristics was analyzed by measuring velocities and droplet size with PDA. Utilizing these results , the basic design factor of GDI injector can be offered.
Phenomenological models for direct injection diesel engine emissions including NO, soot, and HC were implemented into a full engine cycle simulation and validated with experimental data obtained from representative heavy-duty DI diesel engines. The cycle simulation developed earlier by Jung and Assanis (2001) features a quasi-dimensional, multi-zone, spray combustion model to account for transient spray evolution, fuel-air mixing, ignition and combustion. In this study, additional models for HC emissions were newly implemented and the models for NO, soot, and HC emissions were validated against experimental data. It is shown that the models can predict the emissions with reasonable accuracy. However, additional effort may be required to enhance the fidelity of models across a wide range of operating conditions and engine types.
In this paper, two kinds of advanced powder processing techniques Metal Injection Molding (MIM) and Direct Laser Forming (DLF) are introduced to fabricate complex shaped Ti alloy parts which are widely used for medical and aerospace applications. The MIM process is used to strengthen Ti-6Al-4V alloy compacts by addition of fine Mo, Fe or Cr powders. Enhanced tensile strength of 1030 MPa with 15.1% elongation was obtained by an addition of 4 mass%Cr because of the microstructural modification and also the solution strengthening in beta phase. However, their fatigue strength was lower compared to wrought materials, but was improved by HIP. Subsequently, the effect of feeding layer height (FLH) on the characteristics of the DLF compacts was investigated. In the case of 100 ${\mu}m$ FLH, surface roughness was improved and nearly full density (99.8%) was obtained. Also, tensile strength of 1080 MPa was obtained, which is higher than the ASTM value.

A new flash EEPROM device with p^+ poly-Si control gate and n^+ poly-Si floating side gate was fabricated and characterized. The n^+ poly-Si gate is formed on both sides of the p^+ poly-Si gate, and controls the underneath channel conductivity depending on the number of electron in it. The cell was programmed by hot-carrier-injection at the drain extension, and erased by direct tunneling. The proposed EEPROM cell can be scaled down to 50 nm or less. Shown were measured programming and erasing characteristics. The channel resistance with the write operation was increased by at least 3 times.
A simple set of the transition criterion of the condensation regimes and the heat transfer coefficients on the direct contact condensation of the core makeup tank is developed, and implemented in RELAP5/MOD3.1 The condensation regimes are divided into two regimes: supply limit and condensation limit. In mode]ing the transition criterion between two regimes, a large-eddy model developed by Theofanous is used, and the empirical coefficient of the present large-eddy model is close to that of the large-eddy model. It turns out that the modified code better predicts the experimental data, especially the injection flow rate and the water level trend than the original code does.
In this paper, the characteristics of flow and spray motions affected by from piston head configurations were investigated numerically. Calculations were carried out from intake process to the end of compression. GTT (Generalized Tank and Tube method) code, which includes a third order upwind Chakravarthy-Osher TVD scheme and k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with fuel spray analysis was used for the calculations. As a results, piston heads with smaller radii of curvature were found to give stronger reverse tumble than those with larger radii of curvature. Similar results are shown in the convection and diffusion of fuel sprays.
A new concept of reduced quasi-dimensional combustion model for a direct injection diesel engine is developed based on the previously developed quasi-dimensional multi-zone model to improve the computational efficiency. In the reduced model, spray penetration and air entrainment are calculated for a number of zones within the spray while three zones with aggregated spray zone concept are used for the calculation of spray combustion and emission formation processes. It is also assumed that liquid phase fuel appears only near the nozzle exit during the breakup period and that spray vaporization is immediate in order to reduce the computational time. Validation of the reduced model with experimental data demonstrated that the new model can predict engine performance and NO and soot emissions reasonably well compared to the original model. With the new concept of reduced model, computational efficiency is significantly improved as much as 200 times compared to the original model.
In-cylinder flow of a purpose-built small HSDI Hydra Diesel engine was investigated by laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) during induction and compression processes. The flow was quantified in terms of ensemble-averaged axial and swirl velocities, normalized by the mean piston speed, at a plane located 12mm from the cylinder head and corresponding to the mid-plane of the diametrically-opposed quartz windows at an enigne speed of 1000rpm. The formation of toroidal vortices during the intake process and the evolution and decay of swirl motion during the compression process were observed. Turbulence at around TDC of compression became homogeneous and isotropic.
