PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of various cement types on the stress distribution in monolithic zirconia crowns under maximum bite force using the finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The models of the prepared #46 crown (deep chamfer margin) were scanned and solid models composed of the monolithic zirconia crown, cement layer, and prepared tooth were produced using the computer-aided design technology and were subsequently translated into 3-dimensional finite element models. Four models were prepared according to different cement types (zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, glass ionomer, and resin). A load of 700 N was applied vertically on the crowns (8 loading points). Maximum principal stress was determined. RESULTS. Zinc phosphate cement had a greater stress concentration in the cement layer, while polycarboxylate cement had a greater stress concentration on the distal surface of the monolithic zirconia crown and abutment tooth. Resin cement and glass ionomer cement showed similar patterns, but resin cement showed a lower stress distribution on the lingual and mesial surface of the cement layer. CONCLUSION. The test results indicate that the use of different luting agents that have various elastic moduli has an impact on the stress distribution of the monolithic zirconia crowns, cement layers, and abutment tooth. Resin cement is recommended for the luting agent of the monolithic zirconia crowns.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the flexural strength and surface microstructure of the zirconia crown according to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses. Methods: The specimens were made as follows. A specimen without glazing: 1ea, first glazed specimens (group B): 10ea, second glazed specimens (group C): 10ea, third glazed specimens (group D): 10ea. Three-point measuring strength equipment and electron microscopes were used for strength measurement and microstructure observation. As for statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and t-test (level of significance level=5%) were used to determine the difference in the change in flexural strength according to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses. Results: ANOVA analysis of groups B (1st glazing), C (2nd glazing), and D (3rd glazing) revealed that the change in strength between the groups is statistically significant (p=0.023). The Mann-Whitney test for each group revealed that the difference in flexural strength between groups B and C was not statistically significant (z=-0.302, p=0.762) while that between groups C and D was statistically significant (z=-0.257, p=0.01). Microstructure observation revealed 3 changes in the microstructure of the surface of the glaze powder were observed. Conclusion: According to the number of glazing zirconia prostheses, it was found that the difference in strength between groups was statistically significant, and changes in the microstructure were observed.
PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the adhesion of initial colonizer, Streptococcus sanguis, on resin, titanium and zirconia under the same surface polishing condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Specimens were prepared from Z-250, cp-Ti and 3Y-TZP and polished with $1 {\mu}m$ diamond paste. After coating with saliva, each specimen was incubated with Streptococcus sanguis. Scanning electron microscope, crystal violet staining and measurement of fluorescence intensity resulting from resazurin reduction were performed for quantifying the bacterial adhesion. RESULTS. Surface of resin composite was significantly rougher than that of titanium and zirconia, although all tested specimens are classified as smooth. The resin specimens showed lower value of contact angle compared with titanium and zirconia specimens, and had hydrophilic surfaces. The result of scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that bound bacteria were more abundant on resin in comparison with titanium and zirconia. When total biofilm mass determined by crystal violet, absorbance value of resin was significantly higher than that of titanium or zirconia. The result of relative fluorescence intensities also demonstrated that the highest fluorescence intensity was found on the surface of resin. Absorbance value and fluorescence intensity on titanium was not significantly different from those on zirconia. CONCLUSION. Resin specimens showed the roughest surface and have a significantly higher susceptibility to adhere Streptococcus sanguis than titanium and zirconia when surfaces of each specimen were polished under same condition. There was no significant difference in bacteria adhesion between titanium and zirconia in vitro.
PURPOSE. This study was performed to define attachment and growth behavior of osteoblast-like cells and evaluate the gene expression on zirconia compared to titanium. MATERIALS AND METHODS. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on (1) titanium and (2) zirconia discs. The tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT test) was used for examining the attachment of cells. Cellular morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was measured to evaluate the cell differentiation rate. Mann-Whitney test was used to assess the significance level of the differences between the experimental groups. cDNA microarray was used for comparing the 20215 gene expressions on titanium and zirconia. RESULTS. From the MTT assay, there was no significant difference between titanium and zirconia (P>.05). From the SEM image, after 4 hours of culture, cells on both discs were triangular or elongated in shape with formation of filopodia. After 24 hours of culture, cells on both discs were more flattened and well spread compared to 4 hours of culture. From the ALP activity assay, the optical density of E1 cells on titanium was slightly higher than that of E1 cells on zirconia but there was no significant difference (P>.05). Most of the genes related to cell adhesion showed similar expression level between titanium and zirconia. CONCLUSION. Zirconia showed comparable biological responses of osteoblast-like cells to titanium for a short time during cell culture period. Most of the genes related to cell adhesion and signal showed similar expression level between titanium and zirconia.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate translucency and masking ability of translucent zirconia compared to conventional zirconia and lithium disilicate materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three types of zirconia blocks with different yttria contents (3Y, 4Y, 5.5Y) and LS blocks (Rosetta SM) were used. Ten specimens for each group were fabricated with 10 mm diameter, with both 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm thicknesses (± 0.02 mm). All groups of zirconia specimens were sintered and polished according to the manufacturer's instructions. To calculate the translucency parameter (TP), CIELAB value was measured with a spectrophotometer on black and white backgrounds. To investigate the color masking abilities, background shades of A2, normal dentin, discolored dentin, and titanium were used. The color difference (ΔE) was calculated with the CIELAB values of A2 shade background as a reference compared with the values in the various backgrounds. One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests were conducted (P < .05). RESULTS. The TP values of zirconia specimens increased as the yttria content increased. All materials used in the study were able to adequately mask normal dentin shade (ΔE < 5.5), but were incapable of masking severely discolored dentin (ΔE > 5.5). On the titanium background, all materials of 1.5 mm thickness were able to mask the background shade, but with a thickness of 0.8 mm, only 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ were able to mask titanium background. CONCLUSION. All zirconia materials and lithium disilicate specimens used in this study were unable to adequately mask the shade of severely discolored dentin. It is recommended to use 3Y-TZP or 4Y-PSZ with a sufficient thickness of 0.8 mm or more to mask titanium.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know of photopolymerization effect of self-etch dual-cured resin cement on different transmittance and thickness of zirconia disks. Methods: The two types of transparent and opaque zirconia speciments were prepared. The five speciments of each groups were seperated with 0.5mm and 1.0mm thickness. Degree of conversion(DC) were studied by FT-IR spectroscopy using ATR method before and after irradidaion for 40 sec. Results: The relative DC was showed the higher results of ZS5 as compared with ZS10 (p < 0.05). And OP5 and OP10 were lower results than ZS10 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The photopolymerization effect of dual-cured resin cement were affected by the transmittance and thickness of zirconia.
Purpose: To examine the shear bond strengths of zirconia and veneering ceramic according to their surface processing. Methods: The test samples were divided into three groups: one without zirconia surface processing, one sandblasted, and one sandblasted then 3% etched. Then veneering ceramic was fired on all test samples, and their shear bond strengths were measured. Results: The test samples of the control group (Z1) showed the lowest shear bond strengths of $21.82{\pm}1.02$ MPa. The shear bond strengths of Z2 and Z3 ($28.25{\pm}0.72$ and $26.23{\pm}0.82$ MPa, respectively) were relatively higher than those of the control group. The fracture surface of the control group showed adhesive fractures while the test groups had relatively large numbers of cohesive fractures. Conclusion: The shear bond strength was high in the test groups with surface processing while the fracture surfaces showed compound fractures of adhesive and cohesive fractures.
PURPOSE. To evaluate the wear of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dental ceramic materials opposed by enamel as a function of increased chewing forces. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The enamel cusps of healthy human third molar teeth (n = 40) opposed by materials from CAD-CAM dental ceramic groups (n = 10), including Vita Enamic® (ENA), a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN); GC Cerasmart® (CERA), a resin nanoceramic; Celtra® Duo (DUO), a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramic; and IPS e.max ZirCAD (ZIR), a polycrystalline zirconia, were exposed to chewing simulation (1,200,000 cycles; 120 N load; 1 Hz frequency; 0.7 mm lateral and 2 mm vertical motion). The wear of both enamel cusps and materials was quantified using a 3D laser scanner, and the wear mechanisms were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were analysed using Welch ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis test (α = .05). RESULTS. ZIR showed lower volume loss (0.02 ± 0.01 mm3) than ENA, CERA and DUO (P = .001, P = .018 and P = .005, respectively). The wear of cusp/DUO [0.59 mm3 (0.50-1.63 mm3)] was higher than cusp/CERA [0.17 mm3 (0.04-0.41 mm3)] (P = .007). ZIR showed completely different wear mechanism in SEM. CONCLUSION. Composite structured materials such as PICN and ZLS ceramic exhibit more abrasive effect on opposing enamel due to their loss against wear, compared to uniform structured zirconia. The resin nano-ceramic causes the lowest enamel wear thanks to its flexible nano-ceramic microstructure. While zirconia appears to be an enamel-friendly material in wear volume loss, it can cause microstructural defects of enamel.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to make some basic materials to find retention force difference based on the total height of CAD/CAM zirconia abutment used for implant, retention force difference based on how to regulate the height of the abutment, retention force difference based on the size and retention force difference based on the design group. Methods: The retention force was measured by being pulled at the speed of 1mm/min after being combined with zirconia block and abutment using Temp-BOND of Kerr. The experiment was done at the research lab of OSTEM in Busan by useing UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE on March 3rd, 2010. Results: After analysing the total height and the retention force, p-value had minor difference by 0.01 statistically. Namely, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm had the retention force difference and we could see retention force difference on 3mm and 5mm at the post test. After analyzing how to regulate the height and retention force, p-value had minor difference by 0.000 statistically. Namely, 1mm and 2mm had the retention difference and we could see that 1mm and 2mm with the total height had retention difference. After analyzing the retention force based on the size, p-value had minor retention force difference by 0.000 statistically. Namely, 7 different size had retention force difference and we could see the size 21.9mm, 32.9mm, 32.9mm, 38.4mm, 48.9mm and 54.9mm had retention force difference. Conclusion: Namely 9 different design group had retention difference and we could see that 9 design group with 5.6.7.8 design group and 9 design group with 1.2.3.4. design group had retention force.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate possibility of using indirect composite resin instead of porcelain through the measurement of shear bond strength between zirconia core and indirect composite resin under treatment of $Rocatec^{TM}$ system for improving the adhesion of indirect composite resin. 20 cylindrical zirconia core specimens were divided into 2 groups, according to zirconia surface treatment and attached materials: 1) treated with sandblast and attached with indirect composite resin, 2) treated with sandblast + $Rocatec^{TM}$ system and attached with indirect composite resin. The shear bond strength of each experimental group was measured by MTS and the changes of zirconia core surface according to surface treatments were obtained by SEM observation and measurements of surface roughness. The mean shear bond strength values are $0.55\;{\pm}\;0.11MPa$(Group SC) and $1.16\;{\pm}\;0.46MPa$(Group SRC). The mean Ra values for the surface treatments were follows: $0.39\;{\pm}\;0.13$($100{\beta}_{{\mu}m}$ sandblast) and $0.50\;{\pm}\;0.03$($100{\beta}_{{\mu}m}$ sandblast + $Rocatec^{TM}$ system). In the analysis of EDS, Si element was detected in the Group SC. The shear bond strength between zirconia core and indirect composite resin was improved significantly by using $Rocatec^{TM}$ system.
