  • We propose a simple ultraviolet (UV) sensor consisting of a conventional single-mode optical fiber capped with an azobenzene-moiety-containing polymer. The UV light changes the dimensions of the azobenzene polymer, as well as the refractive index of the material. Incident light with a wavelength of 1550 nm was reflected at the fiber/polymer and polymer/air interfaces, and interference of the reflected beams resulted in spectral interference that shifted the wavelength by 0.78 nm at a UV input power of $2.5mW/cm^2$. The UV sensor's response to wavelength is nonlinear and stable. The response speed of the sensor is limited by detection noise, which can be improved by modifying the insertion loss of the UV sensor and the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection system. The proposed compact UV sensor is easy to fabricate, is not susceptible to electromagnetic interference, and only reacts to UV light.

  • Wireless sensor networks are composed of a large number of sensor nodes with limited energy resources. One critical issue in wireless sensor networks is how to gather sensed information in an energy efficient way since the energy is limited. The clustering algorithm is a technique used to reduce energy consumption. It can improve the scalability and lifetime of wireless sensor network. In this paper, we introduce a clustering protocol with mode selection (CPMS) for wireless sensor networks. Our scheme improves the performance of BCDCP (Base Station Controlled Dynamic Clustering Protocol) and BIDRP (Base Station Initiated Dynamic Routing Protocol) routing protocol. In CPMS, the base station constructs clusters and makes the head node with highest residual energy send data to base station. Furthermore, we can save the energy of head nodes using modes selection method. The simulation results show that CPMS achieves longer lifetime and more data messages transmissions than current important clustering protocol in wireless sensor networks.

  • In this paper, we are proposing an optimal design of wideband pulsed type gamma-ray sensors. These sensors were manufactured based on the design results and after word electrical properties were analyzed. The sensor input parameters were derived on the basis of pulsed gamma-ray spectrum and time-dependent energy rate, and the output current which were derived on the basis of the sensor sensitivity control circuit. Pulsed gamma-ray sensors were designed using the TCAD simulators. The design results show that the optimal Epi layer thickness is 45um with the applied voltage 3.3V and the diameter is 2.0mm. The doping concentrations are as follows : N-type is an Arsenic as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$, P-type is a Boron as $1{\times}10^{19}/cm^3$ and Epi layer is Phosphorus as $3.4{\times}10^{12}/cm^3$. The fabricated sensor was a leakage current, 12pA at voltage -3.3V and fully depleted mode at voltage -5V. A test result of pulsed radiation shows that the sensor gives out the optimal photocurrent.

  • This paper presents a built-in current sensor(BICS) that detects defects in CMOS integrated circuits using the current testing technique. This circuit employs a cross-coupled connected PMOS transistors, it is used as a current comparator. The proposed circuit has a negligible impact on the performance of the circuit under test (CUT) and high speed detection time. In addition, in the operation of the normal mode, the BlCS does not have dissipation of extra power, and it can be applied to the deep submicron process. The validity and effectiveness are verified through the HSPICE simulation on circuits with defects. The area overhead of a BlCS versus the entire chip is about 9.2%. The chip was fabricated with Hynix $0.35{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal N-well CMOS standard technology.

  • In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.

  • In this paper, a robust model based fault detection for varying temperature is proposed, To develop a robust force estimation model, it needs temperature information because the force sensor's output is affected by a temperature variation. If an EPB system does not include a temperature sensor, the model has a much larger error than an EPB system with a built-in temperature sensor. Therefore, the temperature is estimated by using Ohm's law. The force model is applied with a motor current, battery voltage, operation mode, and the estimated temperature to detect a force sensor's abnormal signal fault. The residual is calculated by comparing the value of the measured force and the estimated force. Fault information is collected by using the output of the evaluated residual with the adaptive thresholds. A proposed robust model based fault detection for varying temperature was verified by HILS (Hardware in the Loop Simulation).

  • A constant temperature type of flow sensor using a solid state micromachining technology was developed for measuring the velocity of gas or liquid. It was designed to detect only the heat convection related to flow velocity. Other heat transfer terms and common mode interferences are canceled by differentiating both reference and exposed flow sensor. It employs the principle that the change of current through the sensing element can be used to measure the flow velocity. An experimental study of the behavior on this flow sensor was performed in a narrow tube(diameter : 8mm) for city water. The relation between power consumption of the flow sensor and square-root of flow velocity is almost linear in the low velocity range(0-200 cm/sec).

  • A CMOS Image Sensor(CIS) mounted on mobile appliances always needs a low power consumption because of the battery life cycle. In this paper, we propose novel power reduction techniques such as a data flip-flop circuit with leakage current elimination, a low power single slope A/D converter with a novel comparator, and etc. Based on 0.13um CMOS process, the chip satisfies QVGA resolution($320{\times}240$ pixels) whose pitch is 2.25um and whose structure is 4-Tr active pixel sensor. From the experimental results, the ADC in the middle of CIS has a 10-b resolution, the operating speed of CIS is 16 frame/s, and the power dissipation is 25mW at 3.3V(Analog)/1.8V(Digital) power supply. When we compare the proposed CIS with conventional ones, the power consumption is reduced approximately by 22% in sleep mode, 20% in operating mode.

  • A highly sensitive optical-fiber humidity sensor is demonstrated in this paper. By using Nafion-PVA sol-gel and single-mode optical fibers, the Fabry-Perot humidity sensor is easily fabricated. In the humidity range of 29%-72%, humidity-response experiments are carried out with a cycle of rising and falling humidity to investigate humidity-response characteristics. The experimental results show 2.25 nm/%RH sensitivity and a 0.9997 linear correlation coefficient, with good consistency. The changes in optical-path difference (OPD) and free spectral range (FSR) with humidity are also discussed. The humidity sensitivities of a typical sensor are 80.3 nm/%RH (OPD) and 0.03 nm/%RH (FSR). Furthermore, many humidity sensors with different Nafion-PVA sol-gel concentration and initial cavity length are experimentally investigated for humidity response. The results show that the sensitivity increases with higher Nafion ratio of the Nafion-PVA sol-gel. The influence of changing cavity length on sensitivity is not obvious. These results are helpful to research on optical-fiber humidity sensors with good performance, easy fabrication, and low cost.

  • For grid-connected LCL-filtered inverters, the inverter-side current can be used as the control object with one current sensor for both LCL resonance damping and over-current protection, while the grid-voltage feedforward or harmonic resonant compensator is used for suppressing low-order grid current harmonics. However, it was found that the grid current harmonics were high and often beyond the standard limitations with this control. The limitations of the inverter-side current control in suppressing low-order grid current harmonics are analyzed through inverter output impedance modeling. No matter which compensator is used, the maximum magnitudes of the inverter output impedance at lower frequencies are closely related to the LCL parameters and are decreased by increasing the control delay. Then, to improve the grid current quality without complicating the control or design, this study proposes designing the filter capacitance considering the current harmonic constraint and using a PWM mode with a short control delay. Test results have confirmed the limitation and verified the performance of the improved approaches.
