  • In this Paper, we propose an Energy Efficient Time Synchronization technique based on WUSB (Wireless USB) over WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) protocol required for Wearable Computer systems. For this purpose, the proposed Time Synchronization algorithm minimizes power consumption and estimates time information with accuracy. It is executed on the basis of WUSB over WBAN protocol at each sensor node comprising peripherals of a wearable computer system. It minimizes power consumption by exchanging time stamp packets and forming a hierarchical structure.

  • The low-power design of the digital hearing aid is indispensable to achieve the compact portable device with long battery duration. In this paper, new low-power adaptive filter structure is proposed based on distributed arithmetic(DA). By modifying the DA technique, the proposed decimation filter structure can significantly reduce the power consumption and implementation area. Through Verilog-HDL coding, cell occupation of the proposed structure is reduced to 33.49% in comparison with that of the conventional multiplier structure. Since Verilog-HDL simulation processing time of the two structures are same, it is assumed that the power consumption or implementation area is proportional to the cell occupation in the simulation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current intake status and preference of snacks for the elementary school children in Hansan-do area. A survey was conducted by personal interview using a questionnaire and the data were collected from the children as well as their parents. The results of analysis indicated that the preference of snacks, appetite and consumption patterns of snacks, cooking and purchasing snacks vary depending on the family size, housing status, parents' occupation, educational level and age of mothers. The most preferred snacks were milk or milk related products and Ramyun, and the least preferred snacks were fruits. The results could be used as basic information for the development of dietary guideline for elementary school students.

  • One of the imminent problems to be solved within wireless sensor network is to balance out energy dissipation among deployed sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a transmission relay method of communications between BS (Base Station) and CHs (Cluster Heads) for balancing the energy consumption and extending the average lifetime of sensor nodes by the fuzzy logic application. The proposed method is designed based on LEACH protocol. The area deployed by sensor nodes is divided into two groups based on distance from BS to the nodes. RCH (Relay Cluster Head) relays transmissions from CH to BS if the CH is in the area far away from BS in order to reduce the energy consumption. RCH decides whether to relay the transmissions based on the threshold distance value that is obtained as a output of fuzzy logic system, Our simulation result shows that the application of fuzzy logic provides the better balancing of energy depletion and prolonged lifetime of the nodes.

  • Results from experiments and mathematical modeling were compared for pervaporative butanol fermentation. The developed model includes expressions to predict characteristics of butanol fermentation, such as, microbial growth, solvent (butanol, acetone, and ethanol) formation and organic acid (acetate and butyrate) production. Butanol diffusivity was 1.15${\times}$10(sup)-7 ㎡/hr at 1.5 L/min-tubing of air flow rate using a pervaporative module. The model correlated well with experimental results (cell growth, glucose consumption and concentrations of solvents and organic acids) for batch fermentation with and without pervaporation. Larger surface area and thinner module tubing resulted in an increased glucose consumption and a decreased residual butanol concentration. Optimum membrane area and thickness were 0.34 ㎡ and 120 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively.

  • This study addresses the effectiveness of TEC(Thermoelectric cooler) application for spacecraft thermal control. The required radiator area and power consumption characteristics of active thermal control using TEC are compared with the passive control at BOL and EOL through unsteady thermal analyses by calculating external heat fluxes. When the component operating temperature is low enough in TEC active control, the required radiator area can be smaller than the passive thermal control. TEC also needs less power consumption than the passive control under the condition that the temperature of cooling pars is low enough and/or the design temperature margin of the components is narrow enough.

  • Solar energy depends on the altitude and azimuth of the sun, and the amount of energy collected on the slope depends on the latitude of the area being installed. However, since most solar heating systems are fixed to the ground, it is necessary to analyze the optimal installation angle from the early design stage. However, problems arise when energy consumption is not considered together because heating systems are not used in the summer In this study, the optimum installation angles of the solar collectors according to the latitude of the installation area are not simply determined by the amount of energy collected, but because the system is overheated due to climate change or energy usage patterns, And the amount of additional energy input.

  • In this study, new multiplier and adder method designs with multiplexers are proposed. The designs are based on quaternary logic and a carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNTFET). The design utilizes 4 × 4 multiplier blocks. Applying specific rotational functions and unary operators to the quaternary logic reduced the power delay produced (PDP) circuit by 54% and 17.5% in the CNTFETs used in the adder block and by 98.4% and 43.62% in the transistors in the multiplier block, respectively. The proposed 4 × 4 multiplier also reduced the occupied area by 66.05% and increased the speed circuit by 55.59%. The proposed designs are simulated using HSPICE software and 32 nm technology in the Stanford Compact SPICE model for CNTFETs. The simulated results display a significant improvement in the fabrication, average power consumption, speed, and PDP compared to the current bestperforming techniques in the literature. The proposed operators and circuits are evaluated under various operating conditions, and the results demonstrate the stability of the proposed circuits.

  • Electricity is the basic building block of economic development, and constitutes one of the vital infra-structural inputs in socio-economic development. The demand for electricity has been increasing due to extensive urbanization, industrialization, and a rise in the standard of living, as is the case with residential electricity consumption. This paper attempts to estimate the consumer surplus and the economic value of the residential consumption of electricity in Seoul to assist in decision-making in electricity management. The estimated consumer surplus represents the value of the area under the demand curve, above the actual price that is paid for residential electricity consumption. The estimated annual consumer surplus and economic value for the year 2005 amount to 2,144.7 and 3,727.4 billion won, respectively. The estimates per kWh were 184.9 and 316.0 won, respectively, which imply that the consumer surplus and the economic value of residential electricity consumption significantly outweigh the average price of electricity in 2005 of 91.1 won per kWh.
