  • It is known that the Q/C(Quality Control) in the early age of portland cement concrete(PCC) pavement gives a huge effect on long term pavement performance. Thus, many studies regarding the construction of PCC pavement have focused on how to assure construction quality at the early age stage. Curing is one of the most important factor in Q/C of PCC pavement. Membrane curing that protects the evaporation of moisture by placing an impermeable layer on the slab surface is the most common practice for curing the PCC pavement. In order to improve the membrane curing practice, the rate of curing compound should be optimized. However, the optimum rate of curing compound considering Korean weather and environmental conditions has not been specified in the pavement construction specifications. In this study, a proper application rate was recommended in terms of minimizing evaporation with several full-scale tests where various rates of curing compound have been applied. Four test sites on the expressway were enlisted during the summer of 2002 and 2003. Application rates tested were in the range of $0. The rate of evaporation, the temperature pattern of the slab and the pulse velocity of concrete surface have been monitored at each test construction. The result from this study showed that the rate of current construction was approximately $160ml/m^2$ and that approximately $400ml/m^2$ of curing application was recommended as the proper rate for minimizing the moisture evaporation.

  • Asphalt concrete pavement can be widely seen on urban streets, highways, parking lots, and bike trails. Asphalt concrete pavement is relatively temperature sensitive materials due to the viscoelastic behavior, which can be defined as flexible performance in summer and rigid performance in winter. In terms of maintenance, it can be fixed quite easily if damaged. In addition, asphalt concrete pavement is generally found to be black and grey in color. However, several colors can be adopted to change the appearance of plain old boring, black and grey. Generally, there are two types of color systems in hot mix asphalt concrete materials. One system uses colored cementitious material that is applied to pavement surface through coating the surface of the asphalt pavement. The major disadvantage to this system requires a careful skill set to be used on the construction site in order to prevent taking off the cementitious material. The other coloring system colors the asphalt hot mixtures through using color additives. The main advantage to this system is that the asphalt pavement layer is colored using the same techniques that are already used in paving. The disadvantage is that the colors are limited to mainly reds and browns. In this study, a suggested color additive was evaluated, based on rutting, moisture sensitivity, and fatigue cracking performance.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the necessity of the anchor lug system in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) by comparing longitudinal displacements of CRCPs with and without anchor lugs, and to investigate the effect of horizontal cracking on CRCP performance by measuring the vertical displacements. The measurements before and after the anchor lug section was separated were conducted for 12 days in June, and for 14 days in August after the abrupt displacements according to cutting disappeared, respectively. This short term measurement results showed that when anchor lugs were installed, a daily displacement variation at any location was less than 0.1mm; therefore, longitudinal movements were negligibly small. When there were no anchor lugs, longitudinal displacements mainly occurred near the free end and the displacement variation was small; therefore, an expansion joint system seems to be employed at a CRCP terminus without installing anchor lugs. However, further studies are needed to verify the terminus behavior due to annual temperature changes. The horizontal crack width variation was ignorable and did not affect the vertical displacement of the slab. Therefore, the horizontal crack did not delaminate the slab and did not seem to reduce the structural capacity and performance of CRCP.

  • Tensile stress occurs and random crack develops in concrete pavement slab when it contracts by variation of temperature and humidity. The tensile stress decreases and the random crack is minimized by sawcutting the slab and inducing the crack with regular spacing. The random crack, joint damage, decrease of load transfer efficiency are caused by too wide joint spacing while too narrow joint spacing leads to increase of construction cost and decrease of comfort. A mechanistic-empirical joint spacing design method for the concrete pavement was developed in this study. Structurally and environmentally weakest sections were found among the sections showing good performance, and design strengths were determined by finite element analysis on the sections. The joint width for which the load transfer efficiency is suddenly lowered was determined as allowable joint with referring to existing research results. The maximum joint spacing for which the maximum tensile stress calculated by the finite element analysis did not exceed the design strength were found. And the maximum joint width expected by the maximum joint spacing were compared to the allowable joint width. The new method developed in this study was applied to two zones of Hamyang-Woolsan Expressway being designed. The same joint spacing as a test section constructed by 8.0m of joint spacing wider than usual was calculated by the design method. Very low cracking measured at 6 years after opening of the test section verified the design method developed in this study.

  • The transformed field domain analysis method was developed in this study to investigate the aspects of the stress distribution in overlaid concrete pavement systems under multi-axle vehicle loads. The overlay was assumed to be perfectly bonded or perfectly unbonded to the existing concrete pavement. The loads considered included the dual tired single-axle, tandem-axle, and tridem-axle loads, and the effects of the overlay's thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio on the stress distribution were investigated. Details of the analysis method in the transformed field domain to analyze the overlaid pavement was described in this paper and the analysis results were verified by comparing with those obtained using the finite element method. From the analysis, it was found that the maximum tensile stress in the existing slab decreased as the overlay's thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio increased, and the bonded overlay showed more significant effects than the unbonded one. The overlay's Poisson's ratio did not much affect the stresses, and the features of the maximum stress reduction in the existing slab due to the increase of the thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio of the overlay were investigated. The effects of the number of axles on the stress distribution and the maximum stress were also investigated.

  • The study was intended to investigate the changes of construction types of 216 non-national forest roads, which were completed between 1989 and 2005 in Jeollabuk-do, by analyzing their drawing and specification. It was found that the mean length of yearly construction has been significantly reduced after the Policy of Green Forest Roads compared with before the policy. Soil cut-off of earth work was changed from bulldozer to a combination of bulldozer and excavator. Soils were transported by truck in all design, but establishment of spoil-bank was not designed at all. The design of slope revegetation works was developed from turfing and Bastard indigo planting to seed spray, combination of seed spray and belt-sodding, and mulching with coir net and rice straw. In design of the culvert, the average interval of culvert installation was reduced to 92m in step 3, the dimension of culverts was expanded to over 600 mm after step 2, and all drainpipes were corrugated steel pipes. The design length of concrete pavement increased from 40 m/km of step 1 to 240 m/km of step 3. Thanks to the enormously increased amount of concrete pavement, the stability and functionality of forest roads could be improved. Stone masonry was the main work drawn for slope stability, and concrete retaining wall and gabion have been drawn for same object since 1999.

  • In recent high speed rail way, the operating speed of train is enhanced and the introduction of EMU train vehicles is increased. In addition, as expected the demand of the concrete slab track and the trend of design cross-section reduction, the clear behavior of evaluation of internal slab layer is demanded about the variation of design load and speed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and identify the mechanical behavior pattern of concrete slab track and track-road bed with the variation of axle load and train speed. To this end, the behavior of TCL and HSB was evaluated in according to the variation of axle load and speed. And the analysis results and the data measured TCL strain sensor, which was embedded in TCL slab under installation on Honam high speed railway, was analyzed. The analysis result shows that the strain are increasing in according to the speed-up of train, and line regression was obtained from measured data. Analysis data of the state of bonding condition of slab layer and measured data was analyzed. It is conducted that the TCL layer stress of HEMU 430X, which of axle load, is lighter was similar to the stress of KTX-Honam, the standard deviation of measured stress is dramatically increased.

  • Recently, issues related to the quality of concrete have continuously resulted in surface quality problems, such as the exfoliation of concrete surfaces due to the cost reduction of cement and poor quality fine aggregate, scaling of surfaces caused by laitance, and plastic shrinkage cracks. Prompted by social issues, the application of a photo catalyst to road structures is being attempted to solve the environmental problems caused by fine dust and automobile exhaust. In this study, chemical admixtures were developed to improve the surface quality of concrete and to apply and distribute titanium dioxide in nanoscale sizes to provide basic data for the development of a photocatalyst-curing agent. As a result of the experiment, silicon and silane were reviewed as a raw material as a curing agent to develop a high performance curing agent with better film performance than conventional curing agents because they could form a film quickly on a fresh concrete surface. The distributed stability of the ultrasonic disperser showed the best performance through an outdoor test for four weeks to review the dispersion measures for the application of nanomaterials.

  • In case of Korea highways, about 60% of highways are paved by concrete and more than 50% of them were repaired due to reduction in required performance such as damage in pave or joint and delamination of cover pavement. However, repairing old material in such structure generally costs a lot of money and induces difficulty in maintenance. Thus, enhanced material for ensuring economic efficiency should be developed. The present study designed concrete mixtures with 3 levels of replacement using OPC (0, 10, 20%) in calcium aluminate cement and to evaluate material performance for load pavement, experimental works for setting time, compressive strength and flexural strength were carried out on those materials. As a result, 20% replacement for OPC was determined as an optimized material in terms of required physical performance and its unit price. Moreover, to determine cost in load pavement economy analysis using a program (CA4PRS) was conducted with widely used paving materials. Result showed that application for 20% replacement for OPC was the most efficient in economical aspect, arising from 4.052 and 1.577 billion won for total construction and user cost, respectively.

  • Embedded Railway Systems (ERS) will be adapted for wireless trams and will be constructed along city roadways. An asphalt layer should be overlaid on top of the concrete slab used as the trackbed structure in order to ensure smoothness and surface levels equal to those of existing road pavement in downtown city areas. However, the characteristics of an asphalt layer when used as overlay pavement for an ERS are complicated and the behavior of this material is not yet well defined and understood. Therefore, in this study, laboratory shear and tensile bond strength tests were conducted to investigate the bonding behavior of an asphalt layer in a multilayered trackbed section of an ERS. For the laboratory tests, a waterproof coating material was selected as a bonding material between the asphalt overlay and a concrete specimen. Valuable design parameters could be obtained based on the tensile and shear bond strength test results, providing information about the serviceability and durability of the overlaid pavements to be constructed alongside the ERS for wireless trams. In addition, a deformation analysis to assess the tensile strain generated due to truck axle loads at the interface between the asphalt layer and the concrete slab was conducted to verify the stability and performance of the asphalt layer.
