  • In engineering hydrology, an estimation of precipitation loss is one of the most important issues for successful modeling to forecast flooding or evaluate water resources for both surface and subsurface flows in a watershed. An accurate estimation of precipitation loss is required for successful implementation of rainfall-runoff models. Precipitation loss or hydrological abstraction may be defined as the portion of the precipitation that does not contribute to the direct runoff. It may consist of several loss elements or abstractions of precipitation such as infiltration, depression storage, evaporation or evapotranspiration, and interception. A composite loss rate model that combines four loss rates over time is derived as a lumped form of a continuous time function for a storm event. The composite loss rate model developed is an exponential model similar to Horton's infiltration model, but its parameters have different meanings. In this model, the initial loss rate is related to antecedent precipitation amounts prior to a storm event, and the decay factor of the loss rate is a composite decay of four losses.

  • Canister with composite sandwich panel has been suggested owing to its higher stiffness and strength over a weight for square shaped canisters. The pyro shock induced by a short time explosion inside a canister is generally considered to be the most severe source of load affecting on the entire structure. Therefore, in this study, the approach and modeling method to identify the effect of pyro shock on canister with composite sandwich panel in a numerical way were mainly discussed. Moreover, the verification was implemented through comparison with test results.

  • This work investigates the accuracy and performance of a $FE^2$ multi-scale implementation used to predict the behavior of composite materials. The equations are formulated assuming the small deformations solid mechanics approach in non-linear material models with hardening plasticity. The uniform strain boundary conditions are applied for the macro-to-micro transitions. A parallel algorithm was implemented in order to solve large engineering problems. The scheme proposed takes advantage of the domain decomposition method at the macro-scale and the coupling between each subdomain with a micro-scale model. The precision of the method is validated with a composite material problem and scalability tests are performed for showing the efficiency.

  • A novel composite membrane was synthesized using crosslinked polyamide and fly ash ceramic substrate for phenol removal. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker. Characterization shows that synthesized membrane possesses good permeability ($0.184l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}.kPa^{-1}$), MWCO (1.7 kDa), average pore size (1.08 nm) and good chemical stability. RSM was adopted for phenol removal studies. Box-Behnken-Design using quadratic model was chosen for three operating parameters (feed phenol concentration, pH and applied pressure) against two responses (phenol removal, flux). ANOVA shows that model is statistically valid with high coefficient of determination ($R^2$)value for flux (0.9897) and phenol removal (0.9302). The optimum conditions are obtained as pH 2, $46mg.l^{-1}$ (feed phenol concentration) and 483 kPa (applied pressure) with 92.3% phenol removal and $9.2l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}$ flux. Data validation with deviation of 4% confirms the suitability of model. Obtained results reveal that prepared composite membrane can efficiently separate phenol from aqueous solution.

  • In this paper, the elevated temperature on a concrete-galvalume composite beam's flexural strength based on the numerical and experimental methods is investigated. The strategy is to perform modeling and simulation of the flexural test based on finite element method (FEM) at room temperature and validate its results to experimental data at the same temperature. When the numerical model was proven valid, the model was utilized to simulate the effect of elevated temperatures on the composite element. The study concludes that the flexural strength of the beam decreases at higher temperature. Additionally, it was shown that cracking moments is susceptible to temperature fluctuation and the failure modes are sensitive concerning the elevated temperature.

  • A modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating composite cantilever plates is presented. Explicit mass and stiffness matrices are derived by considering the coupling effects between extensional motions and the bending motion, To confirm the accuracy of the method presented in this study, numerical results are obtained and compared to those of a commercial program. Numerical results show that the coupling effect among the three motions becomes important for the accurate estimation of natural frequencies as laminates are stacked up unsymmetrically. Also, natural frequencies loci veering, loci crossing, and mode shape variations are observed.

  • A thermal model of carbon spun yam is presented. The unit cell of spun carbon yam is divided into a number of volume elements and the local material properties have been given to each element. By using Finite Difference Method (FDM), temperature distribution in the unit cell can be obtained. Effective thermal conductivity of the spun carbon yam unit cell is calculated using the temperature distribution and thermal conductivities of local elements.

  • In this study, the simulation was performed for the CO removal process using a composite membrane in DME production. The composite membrane, PEI-PDMS (polyetherimide- polydimethyl siloxane) manufactured by Airrane Co. Ltd., was used in the modeling through a commercial simulation design program, PRO/II with PROVISION 9.2 by Invensys. To simulate the process, the permeability constants of each of the pure component from Airrane Co. Ltd. were determined by regression analysis from the experimental data. The required separation membrane area and utility cost in the CO removal process were obtained using a chemical process simulator and composite membrane with a compatible permeability constant.

  • This paper describes the refined 3-D finite element (FE) modeling of composite frames composed of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and steel-concrete composite beams based on the test to get a better understanding of the seismic behavior of the steel-concrete composite frames. A number of material nonlinearities and contact nonlinearities, as well as geometry nonlinearities, were taken into account. The elastoplastic behavior, as well as fracture and post-fracture behavior, of the FE models were in good agreement with those of the specimens. Besides, the beam and panel zone deformation of the analysis models fitted well with the corresponding deformation of the specimens. Parametric studies were conducted based on the refined finite elememt (FE) model. The analyzed parameters include slab width, slab thickness, shear connection degree and axial force ratio. The influences of these parameters, together with the presence of transverse beam, on the seismic behavior of the composite frame were studied. And some advices for the corresponding seismic design provisions of composite structures were proposed.

  • In this study, the performance of a steel-FRP composite bridge safety barrier was evaluated through vehicle crash simulation. Surface veil, DB and Roving fibers were used for FRP. The MAT58 material model provided by LS-DYNA software was used to model FRP material. Spot weld option was used for modeling contact between steel and FRP beam. The structural strength performance, the passenger protection performance, and the vehicle behavior after crash were evaluated corresponding to the vehicle crash manual. As the result, A steel-FRP composite safety barrier was satisfied with the required performance.
