A Detachable Full-HD Multi-Format Video Decoder: MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.264, and VC-1 (분리형 구조의 고화질 멀티 포맷 비디오 복호기: MPEG-2/MPEG-4/H.264와 VC-1)

  • In this paper, we propose the VLSI design of Multi-Format Video Decoder (MFD) to support video codec standards such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and VC-1. The target of the proposed MFD is the Full HD (High Definition) video processing needed for the high-end D-TV SoC (System-on-Chip). The size of the design is reduced by sharing the common large-size resources such as the RISC processor and the on-chip memory among the different codecs. In addition, a detachable architecture is introduced in order to easily add or remove the codecs. The detachable architecture preserves the stability of the previously designed and verified codecs. The size of the design is about 2.4 M gates and the operating clock frequency is 225MHz in the Samsung 65nm process. The proposed MFD supports more than Full-HD (1080p@30fps) video decoding, and the largest number of video codec standards known so far.

  • This paper presents low-power asynchronous barrel shifters for variable length encoders and decoders useful in portable applications using multimedia standards. Our approach is to create multi-level asynchronous barrel shifters optimized for the skewed shift control statistics often found in these codecs. For common shifts, data passes through one level, whereas for rare shifts, data passes though multiple levels. We compare our optimized designs with the straightforward asynchronous and synchronous designs. Both pre- and Post-layout HSPICE simulation results indicate that, compared to their synchronous counterparts, our designs provide over a 40% savings in average energy consumption for a given average performance.

  • In this paper, we suggest criteria for objective measurement of speech quality in mobile VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services over wireless mobile internet such as mobile WiMAX networks. This is the case that voice communication service is available under other networks. When mobile VoIP service users in the mobile internet network based on packet call up PSTN and mobile network users, but there have not been relevant quality indexes and quality standards for evaluating speech quality of mobile VoIP. In addition, there are many factors influencing on the speech quality in packet network. Especially, if the degraded speech with packet loss transfers to the other network users through the handover, voice communication quality is significantly deteriorated by the transformation of speech codecs. In this paper, we eventually adopt the Gilbert-Elliot channel model to characterize packet network and assess the voice quality through the objective speech quality method of ITU-T P. 862. 1 MOS-LQO for the various call scenario from mobile VoIP service user to PSTN and mobile network users under various packet loss rates in the transmission channel environments. Our simulation results show that transformation of speech codecs results in the degraded speech quality for different transmission channel environments when mobile VoIP service users call up PSTN and mobile network users.

  • In this paper, we discuss a code generation technique for custom transport triggered architecture (TTA) from a high-level language structure. This methodology is implemented by using TTA-based Co-design Environment (TCE) tool. The results show how the scheduler exploits instruction level parallelism in the custom target architecture and source program. Thus, the scheduler generates parallel TTA instructions using lower cycle counts than the sequential scheduling algorithm. Moreover, we take Tensilica tool to make a comparison with TCE. Because of the efficiency of TTA, TCE takes less execution cycles compared to Tensilica configurations. Finally, this paper shows that it requires only 7 cycles to generate the parallel TTA instruction set for implementing Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) applications as an input design, and presents the code generation technique to move complexity from the processor software to hardware architecture. This method can be applicable lots of channel Codecs like CRC and source Codecs like High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).

A Study on Optimum Subband Filter Bank Design Using Vector Quantizer (벡터 양자화기를 사용한 최적의 부대역 필터 뱅크 구현에 관한 연구)

  • This paper provides a new approach for modeling of vector quantizer(VQ) followed by analysis and design of subband codecs with imbedded VQ's. We compute the mean squared reconstruction error(MSE) which depend on N the number of entries in each codebook, k the length of each codeword, and on the filter bank(FB) coefficients in subband codecs. We show that the optimum M-band filter bank structure in presence of pdf-optimized vector quantizer can be designed by a suitable choice of equivalent scalar quantizer parameters. Specific design examples have been developed for two different classes of filter banks, paraunitary and the biorthogonal FB and the 2 channel case. These theoretical results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper This paper proposes a new inverse-quantization(IQ) table interpolation algorithm, specialized Digital Signal Processor(DSP) instructions and hardware architecture for digital audio codecs. Non-linear inverse quantization algorithm is representatively used in both MPEG-1 Layer-3 and MPEG-2/4 Advanced Audio Coding(AAC). The proposed instructions are optimized for the non-linear inverse quantization. The proposed algorithm can minimize operational complexity which reduces total computational load. Performance comparisons show a significant improvement of average error. The proposed instructions and hardware architecture can reduce 20% of the instruction counts and minimize computational loads of IQ algorithms effectively compared with existing IQ table interpolation algorithms. Proposed algorithm can implement commercial DSPs.

  • A leased line modem usability was evaluated and investigated in the wireless internet protocol(IP) network. The signal of the modem in the circuit switching network was translated to IP packet by using several voice codecs (PCM, G.711A, $G.711{\mu}$, and etc.) and transmitted through the wireless IP network. The wireless IP network was simulated by the Tactical information and communication network Modeling and simulation Software(TMS). The performance and usability of the leased line modem are simulated using the system-in-the-loop(SITL) function of TMS with respect to packet delay, jitter, packet discard ratio, codecs, and wireless link BER.

  • Recently, there is increasing concern about smart phone due to the release of iPhone and Android phone. So, There are many kinds of application in smart phone, and applications using multimedia contents is increasing. The famous codecs for Image and video are JPEG, MPEG and h.264, which is popular recently as a vedeo codec because of its high compression ratio compared with the other video codecs. In this paper, we will divide Jpeg Sequence to each Jpeg and will display that Jpeg looks like a video continuously in Android. And we will show you the simulation result.

Like the normal desktop application, using multimedia contents will have important role for smart phone application. The multimedia contents mentioned here mean Image and Video. The famous codecs for Image and video are Jpeg Mpeg and h.264, which is popular recently as a vedeo codec because of its high compression ratio compared with the other video codecs. In this paper, we will use Jpeg and H.264 encoded raw sequences. This paper will suggest how to decode and display effectively Jpeg and H.264 raw sequences arrived from socket stream. And we will show you the simulation result.

  • The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) specification enables sharing of multimedia contents in the home network. Ordinary users will assume multimedia compatibility among DLNA certified devices, but that is generally not the case. There are optional codecs and even proprietary codecs used by the manufacturers. Information on multimedia formats supported by the devices are in general not easily exposed, creating difficulties in media sharing and usage. In this paper, the contents directory information exchanges among DLNA devices over the network is analyzed, and a method for media compatibility analysis is provided, The user can get information on compatible media formats, enabling ease of DLNA system use.
