Passive velocity field control (PVFC) was previously developed for fully mechanical systems, in which the motion task was specified behaviorally in terms of a velocity field, and the closed-loop was passive with respect to a supply rate given by the environment input. However the PVFC was only applied to a single manipulator, the proposed control law was derived geometrically, and the geometric and robustness properties of the closed-loop system were also analyzed. In this paper, we propose a method to apply a decentralized control algorithm to cooperative 3-wheeled mobile robots whose subsystem is under nonholonomic constraints and which convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover it is shown that multiple robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems convergence to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative mobile robot systems.
It is well known that parameter uncertainties and time-delays cannot be avoided in practice and result in poor performance and even instability. Nevertheless, to the authors' best knowledge, there exist few results on model predictive control (MPC) handling explicitly uncertain time-delayed systems. In this paper, we present an MPC algorithm for uncertain time-varying systems with input constraints and state-delay. An optimization problem is suggested to find a memoryless state-feedback MPC law and the closed-loop stability is established under feasibility and certain conditions.
This paper proposes a design method of PID controllers in the framework of a constrained optimization problem. Owing to the popularity for the controller's simplicity and robustness, a great deal of literature concerning PID control design has been published, which can be classified into frequency-based and time-based approaches. However, both approaches have to be considered together for a designed PID control to work well with a guaranteed closed-loop stability. For this purpose, a penalty function is formulated to satisfy both frequency- and time-domain specifications, and is minimized by a recet nonlinear optimization algorithm to attain optimal PID control gains. The proposed method is compared with Wang's and Ho's methods on a suite of example systems. Simulation results show that the PID control tuned by the proposed method improves time-domain performance without deteriorating closed-loop stability.

This paper discusses a design of a nonlinear control for a class of single-input double-output nonlinear mechanical systems. When conventional linearization methods are applied to the mechanical systems, some problems of oscillation and unstable phenomena arise. The proposed nonlinear control system resolves these problems. In this design the eigenvalues of the closed-loop nonlinear system are assigned to desired locations and local asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. is guaranteed. The design method is applied to an inverted pendulum system with a moving weight mechanism. Experimental results show that the proposed nonlinear controller is more effective for stability than the usual linear controller.
This paper presents a robust controller design approach for improving vehicle dynamic roll motion performance and guaranteeing the closed-loop system stability in spite of vehicle parameter variations resulting from aging elements, loading patterns, and driving conditions, etc. The designed controller is linear parameter-varying (LPV) in terms of the time-varying parameters; its control objective is to minimise the $H_{\infty}$ performance from the steering input to the roll angle while satisfying the closed-loop pole placement constraint such that the optimal dynamic roll motion performance is achieved and robust stability is guaranteed. The sufficient conditions for designing such a controller are given as a finite number of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical simulation using the three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) yaw-roll vehicle model is presented. It shows that the designed controller can effectively improve the vehicle dynamic roll angle response during J-turn or fishhook maneuver when the vehicle's forward velocity and the roll stiffness are varied significantly.
In this paper, a robust receding horizon controller for uncertain linear time-varying systems is presented in the dynamic output-feedback form. The existing output-feedback receding horizon controller in the literature is composed of a state observer and a static controller associated with the observer states (similar to LQC control), where the fundamental assumption is that the state observer will supply the exact states as time goes up. The performance of those controllers may be much degraded and even the closed-loop stability may not be guaranteed when the system suffers from disturbances and uncertainties or is time-varying. The proposed controller, which is not necessary to have the state-observer, overcomes such difficulties. Using matrix inequality conditions on the terminal weighting matrix, the closed-loop system stability is guaranteed. Numerical examples are ...

We propose a new design method for a generalized predictive control (GPC) system based on the parametrization of two-degree-of freedom control systems. The objective is to design the GPC system which guarantees the stability of the control system for a perturbed plant. The design procedure of our proposed method consists of three steps. First, we design a basic controller for a nominal plant using the LQG method and parametrize a whole control system. Next, we identify the deviation between the perturbed plant and the nominal one using a closed-loop identification method and design a free parameter of parametrization to stabilize the closed-loop system. Finally, we design a feedforward controller so as to incorporate GPC technique into our controller structure. A numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

A new method for the design of predictive controllers for SISO systems is presented. The proposed technique allows uncertainties and constraints to be concluded in the design of the control law. The goal is to design, at each sample instant, a predictive feedback control law that minimizes a performance measure and guarantees of constraints are satisfied for a set of models that describes the system to be controlled. The predictive controller consists of a finite horizon parametric-optimization problem with an additional constraint over the manipulated variable behavior. This is an end-constraint based approach that ensures the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. The inclusion of this additional constraint, in the on-line optimization algorithm, enables robust stability properties to be demonstrated for the closed-loop system. This is the case even though constraints and disturbances are present. Finally, simulation results are presented using a nonlinear continuous stirred tank reactor model.
