Objective: The objective of this study was to develop and apply a Teacher Learning Community Program in order to improve the specialization of infant daycare center teachers and explore the changes in the learning attitudes of teachers. Methods: To develop the program, the requirements were analyzed by surveying 500 teachers of infant classes. The developed program was provided to 25 infant daycare center teachers for a total of 14 sessions. A total of 75 sets of collected journal writing materials were analyzed qualitatively. Results: First, the Teacher Learning Community Program for infant daycare center teachers was developed. Second, the Teacher Learning Community Program was found to bring a shift in the learning attitudes among the teachers of infant classes towards reflective and communal learning. Conclusion/Implications: The Teacher Learning Community Program brought a shift in the learning attitude towards reflective and communal learning. Thus, the Teacher Learning Community Program can be applied as a teacher education program for improvement of the specialization of infant daycare center teachers.
The purpose of the study was to implement and evaluate a nutrition education program for preschool children. Applying the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, the nutrition education program was developed and focused on changing beliefs, increasing nutrition knowledge and consumption of vegetables & fruits (V/F) and dairy foods. Subjects were children attending a childcare center in Seoulwho were grouped into education (n = 33) and control group (n = 32). Education group received four sessions of nutrition education during 2011 fall. Both groups completed the questionnaire at pretest and posttest, measuring nutrition knowledge, beliefs, and preferences of V/F and eating behaviors. Compared to control group, education group made significant gains in total score of nutrition knowledge after the education (p < 0.05). In addition, the pretest-posttest changes in total score of beliefs regarding V/F consumption and eating behaviors were higher in the education group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Two groups were significantly different in the pretest-posttest changes in specific beliefs regarding the benefits of V/F consumption and some eating behavior. However, there were no changes in the preferences of vegetables or fruits between the two groups after the education. The consumption of V/F and dairy foods was not significantly different after the education. This study revealed that nutrition education for preschoolers was effective in improving nutrition knowledge and perceived benefits regarding V/F consumption and specific eating behavior. This study suggested that more intensive education is needed to induce changes in eating behaviors. This program can be used in nutrition education of children at the childcare centers or kindergartens.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of the Oral Health Education Program (OHEP) on the change in the children's brushing behavior and reduction in the dental plaque index (PI) and to identify changes in their parents' perception of oral health. Methods: The OHEP was applied 44 children recruited from two childcare centers. We conducted a self-reported survey of the parents at baseline and evaluated the oral conditions of the children at baseline and after 5 weeks. Their brushing behavior was assessed once a week during the OHEP intervention period and daily at home thereafter. We measured the PI after a 12-week follow-up and performed repeated measures analysis of varience. Results: The average PI score of children significantly decreased at week 5 as compared to the baseline (1.90±0.53, p<0.001), despite a substantial increase in week 12 (2.67±0.08, p<0.001). OHEP was effective in reducing the PI score and modifying their brushing behavior. Conclusions: OHEP effectively modified the brushing the behavior of the children. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and expand a systematic oral health education program to promote self-management of oral health in children.
Objective: This study was to develop a creative problem-solving(CPS) program conducive to the improvement of young children's creativity, creative problem-solving competence, social and communication skills. The program was based on the picture books, focusing on young children's cooperative activities. Methods: In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, 99 five-year-old children were induced to participate in it. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, data were analyzed in advance and post hoc test was conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: This program had positive effects on children's creativity, creative problem-solving competence, social and communication skills. Conclusion/Implications: The purpose of the program was to solve the problems we face in our daily life creatively through cooperative activities. The creative problem-solving(CPS) program for the young children focused on cooperative activities using the picture books was very effective in improving young children's creativity, creative problem-solving competence, social and communication skills.
The change in people's dietary life has led to an increase in an intake of processed foods and food chemicals, raising awareness about taste education for preschoolers whose dietary habits start to grow. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction of parents and childcare personnel after developing a taste education program and demonstrating it in class. A part of the curriculum developed by Piusais and Pierre was referred for the program. After educating 524 preschoolers in child care facilities in Seoul, a satisfaction survey was conducted on the program. The data in this study were analyzed using SPSS 14.0. Statistical analysis was conducted based on the frequency after collecting the data. Mean ${\pm}$ SD used to determine satisfaction with taste education, with preferences marked on a five-point scale and the alpha was set at 0.05. The program includes five teachers' guides with subjects of sweetness, saltiness, sourness, bitterness and harmony of flavor, and ten kinds of teaching tools. For the change in parents' recognition of the need for taste education based on five-point scale, the average of $4.06{\pm}0.62$ before the program has significantly increased to $4.32{\pm}0.52$ (P < 0.01). Regarding the change in the preferences for sweetness, saltiness, sourness, and bitterness, the average has increased to $3.83{\pm}0.61$, $3.62{\pm}0.66$, $3.64{\pm}0.66$, and $3.56{\pm}0.75$ respectively. In an evaluation of instructors in child care facilities, the average scores for education method, education effect, education contents and nutritionists, and teaching tools were at $4.15{\pm}0.63$, $3.91{\pm}0.50$, $4.18{\pm}0.50$, and $3.80{\pm}0.56$ respectively. In addition, the need for a continuous taste education scored $4.42{\pm}0.67$. This program has created a positive change in preschoolers' dietary life, therefore the continuation and propagation of the taste education program should be considered.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop a music making program that utilizes the characteristics of the picture books medium through the ADDIE model so that teachers can easily apply it to children, and to determine whether it affects children's musical aptitude and music creativity. Methods: The Participants of the study were 42 five-year-old children attending a daycare in Seoul, of which 20 were in the experimental group and 22 in the comparative group. The experimental group participated in a music production program using picture books, and during the same period, the comparison group participated in music activities suggested by the Nuri Course. Using the SPSS 22.0 program, average, standard deviation, independent sampling t-test, and ANCOVA(Analysis of Covariance) were calculated. Results: The music making program using picture books improved children's rhythm and tone which are the sub-items of music aptitude. The music making program enhanced children's music flexibility, music creativity, music logic which are the sub-items of music creativity. Conclusion/Implications: The music making program presented systemic teaching-learning method with which teachers explained the modeling and practiced from simple activities to various activities repeatedly in order to make teachers approach music making more easily. It is recommendable to make the music making program by using I-pad and computers.
Objective: This study aimed to develop and apply the home connection program for promoting the mathematical interaction of parents of 3-year-olds. Methods: We surveyed questionnaires for 36 parents and interviewed 3 parents of 3-year-olds for the development of the program. Twenty-one 3-year-olds were selected as participants in the program. Quantitative data from a checklist for parent's mathematical interaction were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Qualitative data from self-evaluation of teachers and parents were categorized and analyzed in terms of meaning. Results: Based on the home connection program, the session were provided in the following order [educare center activities ${\rightarrow}$ home-linked activities ${\rightarrow}$ home+educare integrated activities] and in each session, the three-step course [sharing of thinking ${\rightarrow}$ gathering of thinking ${\rightarrow}$ broadening of thinking] was applied. Implementation of this program led to promoting parental mathematical interaction. Conclusion/Implications: This study will lead to follow-up studies that reveal positive effects of our program.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to develop a mathematics education program utilizing food to improve the mathematical abilities of 4-year-olds and to analyze the effects of this program on 4-years-olds' mathematical concepts (number and operation, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability). Methods: The study selected 30 4-year-olds from two daycare centers located in K city. The experimental group (N=15) participated in the mathematics education program utilizing food, 10 times for five weeks, while the comparative group (N=15) participated in the seasonal mathematics education program based on the Nuri Curriculum. The activities of this intervention program were designed to cover all domains of Mathematical Exploratory areas in the Nuri Curriculum. For data processing and analysis, pre-test and post-test score differences between the two groups were analyzed through MANCOVA. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher scores on five mathematical concepts compared with the control group. A mathematics education program utilizing food had the positive effect of improving 4-year-olds' mathematical ability. Conclusion/Implications: Mathematic education programs utilizing food are recommended as necessary pedagogical data to develop the mathematical abilities of children in education centers, families, or relating to parenting education.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and examine the effects an of educational drama program for promoting a sense of community on young children's community life skills. Methods: The program organized activities to achieve a sense of community. Community life skill, a behavioral skill that is the basis for developing a sense of community, was naturally reflected in the activities. The program was designed to run a total of 15 sessions twice a week for 60 minutes each time. The participants were five-year-olds, 27 in the experimental group and 26 in the control group. In order to examine the effects of the program, a sense of community and community life skills were measured and the data were analyzed with T-test. Results: The results are summarized as follows: first, the program had positive effects on emotional consciousness and mutual public consciousness of sense of community; second, community life skills were improved through this program. Conclusion/Implications: Based on these results, the effectiveness of the educational drama program for promoting young children's sense of community and the ways to promote children's sense of community in early childhood education institutes were discussed.
Western missionary nurses practiced in Korea from 1891. and the first trial to begin missionary public health nursing service in 1909 could not put into practice for short of nursing staff and budget. The main focus of missionary medical practice was not in public health program but in the management of missionary hospitals. A few of missionary western R.N. tried district nursing in 1910s. but their activities were personal and focused on the rescue of poor and sick patients. In 1917 the North American Methodist Church dispatched R.N. Elizabeth S. Roberts to begin district nursing in Korea. Roberts began maternal and child district nursing service.
