  • The main purpose of this study was to assess the effects of SES, mother's psychological well-being, child-rearing behavior and child's peer relationship on school adjustment. A total of 237 children enrolled in the 5th and 6th grade and their mothers were used for this study. Data was collected via questionnaires completed by children and their mothers. The path analysis of antecedent variables influencing child's school adjustment revealed two different patterns. Firstly, socioeconomic status influenced child's school adjustment through maternal psychological well-being. Secondly, maternal psychological well-being affected by socioeconomic status contributed to child's school adjustment through positive child-rearing behavior and positive peer relationship. Focusing on maternal psychological well-being and mother's child-rearing behavior, the implication for promoting child's school adjustment are discussed.

  • The study is to investigate mothers' parental beliefs about child development and the children's developmental tasks, and to explore the relationship between mother's parental beliefs and child-rearing behaviors. The subjects are 113 pairs of 4- to 5-year-old children and their mothers. For measuring maternal beliefs about child-development, 'beliefs about development scale' and 'child-rearing beliefs scales' were used. For mother's child-rearing behaviors, 'child rearing behavior observation scale' was used. The main results were: first, mothers value the cognitive theory and 'autonomous behavior' higher than 'conforming behavior' in developing their children. Second, there were no differences in mother's parenting beliefs in the factors of 'gender of their children' and 'maternal job status', while there were significant differences in maternal beliefs according to the levels of mother's education and family income. Third, sub-scales of their parenting beliefs were correlated with interactive behaviors between them and their children. The more mothers put importance on cognitive theory and children's autonomous behaviors, the more their supportive child-rearing behaviors during child-mother task solving situations were showed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relative effects of father's parenting behavior, parenting stress and knowledge on bringing up children on his parenting self-efficacy. Two hundred and seventy fathers with children under the age of seven participated in this study. Fathers showed a lower level of parenting stress and a higher level of knowledge on child rearing. A higher level of parenting self-efficacy was observed in fathers who have good jobs. The factors of father's parenting behavior, parenting stress and knowledge on rearing children were significant variables in predicting his parenting self-efficacy. A factor of knowledge on child rearing was the best predictor of father's parenting self-efficacy.

Parent's achieving pressure had a negative correlation with the maternal child rearing behavior and influenced children's learned helplessness, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's self-evaluation. Maternal child rearing behavior influenced children's self-evaluation, but did not influence children's learned helplessness directly. Children's self-evaluation had the strongest direct impact on children's learned helplessness. This was found to be a mediating factor between home environmental factor and children's learned helplessness.

Method: The participants were 338 fifth and sixth graders who attended two randomly selected elementary schools in the city of G, Gangwon province. Child-rearing attitudes of the mother were rated on a 5-pointed scale that developed by Schaefer and added by Oh & Lee(1982). Problem conduct of children were rated on a 3-pointed scale of the K-YSR by Oh Kyung-Ja et al.(1997). The data were gathered from October 2 to October 28, 2004, and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 program. Results: For the children's perception of mother's child-rearing attitude, student had a relatively high mean scores of 3.70±0.44. Correlations between the mother's child-rearing attitude and general characteristics of the children showed statistically significantly different according to grade, father-mother relations, type of residence and extent to which father shared household chores. The mean score for problem conducts of children was 0.47±0.25. The average for their internal behavior problems was 0.52±0.33, and for external behavior problems was 0.44±0.24. There were statistically significantly differences in the behavior problem scores of the children according to the general characteristics of grade, education, occupation, mother-father relations, extent to which father shared in household chores and religion. As to correlation between mother's child-rearing attitude and their problem conduct, every type of attitude had a significantly moderate reverse correlation to every type of behavior problem of the children(r=-.431, p=.000). Conclusion: Mother's child-rearing attitudes might affect the problem conduct of children, and mother should try to treat their children with affection and respect, to maintain good relations with father, and to bring their children up coherently in an autonomous, permissive, positive and democratic manner.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mothers' child-rearing attitudes and children's self-regulation on their prosocial behaviors. The participants were 151 children(aged 5-6) and their mothers. The results were as follows: (1) Subordinate spheres of 'controlling' and 'playing' in mothers' child-rearing attitudes and children's prosocial behaviors showed significant positive correlations. (2) Children's self-regulation was positively related to their prosocial behaviors. (3) When children's self-regulation was controlled, mothers' child-rearing attitudes did not show any positive correlations with children's prosocial behavior. In conclusion, children's self-regulation mediated the association between mother's child-rearing attitudes and prosocial behaviors.
