손자녀 양육지원에 따른 조모와 취업모의 관계 경험 : 세대 간 지원 제공 및 수혜의 의미 (Providing and Utilizing Child Care by Grandmothers in South Korea : Grandmothers' and Employed Mothers' Relationship Experiences)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of grandmothers who provide child care services to their grandchildren and employed mothers who utilize child care by grandmothers, with regards to their relationships while exchanging the specific type of intergenerational support. The data for this study came from 42 in-depth, individual interviews with 21 pairs of employed mothers who had at least one child younger than elementary-school age and their mothers or mothers-in-law who had provided child care on a daily basis for their grandchildren. Our phenomenological analysis revealed that the grandmothers felt uncomfortable and overwhelmed when caring for their grandchildren and that they considered this activity to be different from caring for their own children by nature. However, the grandmothers wanted to help their adult children based on their feeling of "boo-mo-ma-eum" (meaning parental heart, i.e., love or care). The employed mothers perceived that they were substantially dependent on the grandmothers by receiving help with child care and housework. Reliance on grandmothers was inevitable and beneficial to these mothers. Dynamic intergenerational living arrangements enabled the dependent relationships. The grandmothers set specific boundaries pertaining to current and future child care so that they would not take on too much responsibility for child care. The mothers used various strategies that contributed to stable child care support from the grandmothers. Providing financial remuneration was an important strategy that had symbolic relational meanings, such as expressing gratitude, rather than financial meanings.

  • Objective: The purpose this study is to explore the relationship between grandmothers and mothers when grandmothers take care of their grandchildren, and to understand the particular meaning of it. Methods: The Participants were 5 grandmothers who have supported or have experience in caring for their grandchildren, and their daughters(5 working mothers) who have entrusted their children to them. In-depth interviews were conducted and analysed by the phenomenological qualitative research method. Results: Seventeen sub-constructs and 5 constructs resulted in: (1) Motivation of grandmothers and mothers for taking care of grandchildren. (2) Pressure of grandmothers and satisfaction of mothers for the support. (3) Grandmothers stepping back and saying 'Not my child' and mothers saying 'It's my child' and thinking their influence is big. (4) Consistent sacrifice of grandmothers and mothers who cannot do the same. (5) Grandmothers feeling empty after caring for their grandchildren and mothers realizing their efforts. Conclusion/Implications: This study attempted to understand the relationship between grandmothers and mothers when grandmothers take care of their grandchildren from multi-perspectives. Through the findings, the need for developing healthy relationships and a caring environment for grandmothers and their grandchildren is stressed.

취업모 가정에서 손자녀를 돌보는 조모의 양육스트레스와 삶의 질 (Care Stress and Quality of Life of Grandmothers Caring for Their Grandchildren in Employment Mother's Home)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the degree of care stress and the quality of life of grandmothers caring for their grandchildren while mother was employed. Method: A convenience sample of 107 grandmothers were measured for grandmother's care stress using a revised for of the PSI/SF and the quality of life tool by Andrew and Weinert. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and Pearson correlation coeffcients were used to analyze the data using SPSS/PC 10.0 Results: The results found that grandmothers' care stress was high according to their age and religion. Their quality of life was low according to their age, their present health status, income and sleep pattern. Their subjective care stress was a sense of social isolation, burden of caring for grandchildren, health problems, and conflict with adult children. Care stress and quality of life were found to be negatively correlated. This result was statistically significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was found that the care stress was high and affected quality of life. From this study it is proposed that there is a need to develop programs which consider grandmother' techniques in child care and health care to improve their quality of life. Ultimately, a good care environment for children will be good for the children's growth and development.

영유아 손자녀와 그림책읽기 시 조모의 언어적·비언어적 상호작용 분석 연구 (Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Behaviors of Grandmothers during Young Grandchildren-Grandmother Picture Book Reading)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate grandmothers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors during young grandchildren-grandmother picture book reading. Methods: Participants were fifty-two children aged 22-42 months and their grandmothers. The researcher visited participating children's homes or child care centers and videotaped grandchildren-grandmother book reading activities. Each grandmother read two picture books for each observation. Grandmother surveys were administered after the reading activities. Parent surveys were completed by parents and were returned to the researcher. Results: First, grandmothers began reading picture books to grandchildren when children were 6 to 11-months-old or 12 to 17-months-old. They spent 5 to 10 minutes or 10 to 15 minutes at a time reading books. Second, grandmothers' most frequent verbal behavior during young grandchildren-grandmother picture book reading was 'explaining,' followed by 'questioning,' and 'providing feedback,' in that order. Grandmothers' MLU-eojeol during grandchildren-grandmother reading was 2.56. Their most frequently used nonverbal behavior was 'pointing,' followed by 'gestures.' Lastly, there was a significant difference in grandmothers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors during grandchildren-grandmother reading, depending on the grandmothers' characteristics. Conclusion/Implications: Grandmothers use various verbal and nonverbal behaviors during grandchildren-grandmother picture book reading activities, and there are significant differences in grandmothers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors with grandchildren based on grandmothers' characteristics.

손자녀를 돌보는 조모의 신체 건강 및 여가 활동 만족도에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Physical Health Satisfaction and Leisure Activity Satisfaction of a Grandchild Caregiving Grandmother)

  • 본 연구는 돌봄 관련 변수가 손자녀를 돌보는 조모의 신체 건강 만족도와 여가 활동 만족도에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 실시되었다. 손자녀를 돌보는 조모 141명을 대상으로 수집된 자료는 기술 통계와 Pearson의 적률상관계수, 위계적 중다회귀로 분석되었다. 연구 결과, 신체 건강 만족도에는 조모의 교육 수준과 월 가계 총 소득, 돌보는 손자녀 수, 성인 자녀와의 돌봄 갈등여부가 영향 변수였다. 즉, 교육 수준이 높을수록, 월 가계 총 소득이 높을수록, 돌보는 손자녀의 수가 많을수록, 성인 자녀와 돌봄 갈등이 없는 경우, 조모의 신체 건강 만족도가 높았다. 여가 활동 만족도에 영향을 미치는 변수로는 조모의 교육 수준과 성인 자녀와의 돌봄 갈등 여부가 포함되어, 조모의 교육 수준이 높을수록, 자녀와의 돌봄 갈등이 없을 때, 이들의 여가 활동 만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 함의를 논하였고 정책적, 실천적 측면에서 제언하였다.

조모의 손자녀 돌봄 의도에 미치는 돌봄 경험의 영향 : 동거여부에 따른 비교 (The Influence of the Caregiving Experience on Grandmothers' Caregiving Intent for Grandchildren, with Regard to Co-residence)

  • This study was conducted in order to understand grandmothers' intent of caring for working mothers' children and the influence of related variables with regard to living arrangements. The data was collected from 245 grandmothers who have been caring for their grandchildren for more than 6 months. The data was analyzed by mean, t-test, x2-test, and logistic regression analysis. The results were as follows: first, as to whether the grandmothers were willing to take care of their grandchildren again, 56.5% answered "yes", while 43.5% were not willing to do so. Those who were not living together with their grandchildren were more likely to answer positively. Second, it was found upon analysis that the significant variables of the experience differed according to grandmothers' residential status. In the case of co-residing grandmothers, the significant variables were the number and age of the grandchildren, their relationship, satisfaction, and feeling of burden, while only satisfaction was significant in non-co-residing grandmothers' cases. This implies that the more satisfaction the non-co-residing grandmothers experience, the more likely they are willing to take care of their grandchildren again. As for the co-residing grandmothers, it implies that the characteristics of the grandchildren, satisfaction, and feeling of burden, all influence their caregiving intent for the next time.

맞벌이 가정 조모의 손자녀 양육경험와 양육갈등에 관한 현상학적 연구: 조모와 취업모 관점에서 (A Phenomenological Study on the Child-rearing Experience and Conflict of Grandmothers in Dual-income Families: from the Grandmother's and Working Moms' Point of View)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 맞벌이 가정에서의 조모들의 손자녀 양육참여와 갈등을 알아봄으로써 공동양육자인 조모세대와 성인자녀세대의 조모 양육에 관한 견해들을 이해하고, 건강한 관계정립을 하여, 좀 더 나은 양육 환경을 조성하기 위함이다. 이 목적을 위해서 경기도 지역의 영 유아기 손자녀를 양육하는 6명의 조모와 그들의 성인자녀 중 6명의 취업모 총 12명을 대상으로 하였다. 자료수집기간은 2014년 5월부터 2014년 12월까지이며, 개방형 반구조 면접지침에 따른 심층면접과 전자우편, 관찰을 통해 이루어졌다. 자료분석은 현상학적 방법을 이용하였다. 연구결과, 78개의 의미단위와 15개의 하위구성요소, 6개의 구성요소를 도출하였다. 6개의 구성요소는 (1) 조모의 양육경험: 손자녀 양육을 통한 조모의 이중역할 (2) 취업모의 양육경험: 취업모의 모성이데올로기의 갈등 (3) 조모 관점에서의 긍정적 효과: 조모의 생성감 증가와 자녀세대와의 친밀한 유대관계형성 (4) 취업모 관점에서의 긍정적 효과: 취업모의 양육스트레스 감소 (5) 손자녀 양육경험의 부정적 효과: 조모의 양육 스트레스 증가와 취업 모의 낮은 양육 효능감 (6) 양육갈등: 두 명의 엄마와 충돌하는 양육 가치관으로 도출되었다. 본 연구를 통해 양육태도와 양육기술에 대한 두 엄마의 다른 가치관의 충돌은 서로에 대한 이해와 조율의 필요성이 제기됨으로 사회적인 개입이 필요함을 시사한다.

  • Objective: This study examined the effects of maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior and mothers' self-differentiation and positive parenting behavior on self-concept in late childhood. Methods: A total of 341 $5^{th}$- and $6^{th}$- grade elementary school children and their mothers participated in the study. Children were surveyed regarding perceptions of their mothers' positive parenting behavior and their own self-concept. Mothers responded to questionnaires regarding both positive parenting behavior of their mothers and their own self-differentiation. The data were analyzed using SEM. Results: Maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior had an indirect effect through mothers' self-differentiation and positive parenting behavior on children's self-concept. Mothers who perceived positive parenting behavior in their mothers in their childhood showed positive parenting behavior (as perceived by their children), and those children reported a higher level of self-concept. Mothers who perceived their mother's parenting behavior in their childhood more positively reported a higher level of self-differentiation, and those mothers showed more positive parenting behavior (as perceived by their children), which led to more positive self-concept in children. Conclusion: The findings specify the pathways from maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior to children's self-concept through mothers' self-differentiation and positive parenting behavior in an aspect of the intergenerational transmission of parenting. The findings also emphasize the importance of mothers' positive parenting behavior for positive self-concept in late childhood.

전문직 취업모의 자녀관리 현황조사 (A Survey of the Current Child Care Practices of Professional Working Mothers)

  • The present study investigated the current child care practices of professional working mothers in Korea and their needs for substitute child care outside the home. Three hundred twenty-two professional working mothers who have children under 6 years of age in Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, and Taejon were surveyed with the use of a questionnaire. It was found that during their working hours, most of the professional working mothers put their children in the care of either the paternal or the maternal grandmothers. Others put the children in the care of a full-time housekeeper or a part-time housekeeper. While all the mothers had worked out a way to care for their children, almost all of them would use day care if facilities were available. Specifically, 42 per cent prefer child care at their work site, 21 per cent prefer family day care, and only 3 per cent indicated that they would not use any child care facilities. Most of the working mothers think that their employer should manage the day care program. Others prefer social agency or government management. Regarding costs, most prefer that costs should be split 50-50 between the employer and the family. In addition, professional working mothers wanted quality programs with educational components rather than mere custodial care. It was concluded that variety in types of quality child care programs should be available to provide working mothers the options of choosing what they want for their children. The main type of programs suggested by this study is work site based child care for children under 3 years of age. The existing law for the Saemaul Nursery School program should be implemented so as to include programs for children under 3.

교사직 취업모의 자녀위탁 실태 및 탁아 요구에 관한조사 (Child Care Arrangement and The Needs of Day Care Programs of teaching Mothers with Preschool Children)

  • The purpose of this study was to collect the datas about the child care arrangement and the needs of day care programs of teaching mothers with preschool children and to develop the more desirable day care programs for them. The objects were 255 teaching mothers with preschool children. The results were as follows: 1) Teaching mothers who didn't use the day care center tended to put their children in the care of the paternal or maternal grandmothers, Major contributions of those baby-sitters were to protect the children and make everyday life training (44.0%) 2) The first reason for the mothers who used the day care center was that they had no other hands for their children(43.7%) and next reason was that the concerns for their children's socialization(35.4%) 3) Teaching mothers did not want the day care service during the vacation except 20% of them. 4) Teaching mothers absolutely wanted the day care service center especially inside their jobsite(61.0%) than any other type of day care programs and also wanted supporting by the government(66.5%) About the choice criterions of the day care center nutrition health and safety were suggested as the most important factor. They also prefered the experience with other peers and the programs focusing on the emotional development of the children.
