A Study on Character analysis and make up design in TV action drama 'ya-cha(夜叉)'

  • This study action drama TV drama 'Ya-ha'(夜叉) the actual work practices of the pre-consultation stage through the Writers, Producer, Art directors and in consultation with the opinion of the character set the record of the contents and character changes over time in accordance with characters makeup the design elements were analyzed. The methods of study was used local and abroad related books, studies, publications and cases and the subjects were limited to be four male make up characters in drama 'Ya-cha'. As a result, TV action drama 'Ya-cha' make up design elements and representation techniques were classified as description of skin tone, wound, the shape of eyebrows, hair type, shape of beard and materials and carried out an important role in the character representation. First, presentation techniques changed skin tones depending on character and position and described wound shape as expression technique and materials were analyzed. Second, the shape of eyebrows was based on the physiognomy of the form. And hair type changed volume, thickness, length and texture depending on character. Third, shape of beard is expressed different kinds of volume, thickness, length and texture depending on character. There fore, that systematization of the make-up design elements is useful to express stable characters and make drama for make up in various image genres.

  • The audience of the performing arts enacted on the stage appreciate acting of the characters in a play to understand its plot, identify with the characters, and comprehend the message and subject matters of the play. Stage make-up in particular should assist audience in comprehending the story without overpowering or distracting the script. Stage make-up is a crucial means to visualize occupation, class, personality, and age of the characters. Thus it is an essential means in producing a high quality performance. The aim of the study is to examine character-emphasis make-up for a play by reviewing theories on the concepts and methods of the stage make-up. The methodology of the study was to analyze character make-up of the adopted play The Madwoman of Chaillot (La Folle de Chaillot) translated from the original French, as a case study. The technique and features of the character make-up of the play were examined, and functions of each factor of the character make-up depending on a role were also examined. The results of the study are as follows. The stage make-up for creating and expressing a distinctive personality of the characters in a play must integrate environmental factors external to a performance such as lighting and scale of a venue. Moreover the stage make-up must adopt and reconstruct internal factors of the play such as interpretation of the original work, subject matters, interpretation of the script, character analysis based on the discussion with a director, and design setting.

  • The performing art represents joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure through acting and dance, and is told to be a composite art represented by make-up, setting, costume and props. Therefore, it can be said that make-up is an important medium of stage art. Make-up in stage art is a kind of communication with audiences through understanding personalities of characters as demanded by scenarios. Due to the creative stage make-up which meets the character in the play relevant to these contents of the play, the conceptual study on stage make-up design for visual expression coincide with the intended character is needed. In this study, I investigate theoretical, universal, and psychological personality types by analyzing basic appearance features based on the physiognomy(face-reading) related from the psychological theories. And visualized through illustration according to personality types to apply for the characters in the play.

공포영화에 나타난 공포 캐릭터의 분장표현 연구 (A Study on Make-up Expression of Horror Character in Horror Movie)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine make-up expression elements of horror characters as an evil spirit, a vampire, a zombie, a monster and a psycho murderer through make-up, focused on horror movies of the United States after1960s. First, an evil spirit was expressed that the pupil grew dim without a focus and the skin was torn by going bad and rot completely. Also, it was expressed that its teeth was changed to pointed canine teeth as a wild beast and its pale and bloodless face showed blood vessels clearly. To express its bloodless and pale skin, air brush was swept into the skin over several times. Its canine tooth was made acryl powder into its shape and was harden to make its shape smooth. Also, it was colored to show people like the real thing. Second, a vampire was expressed by make-up elements as long nails, a sharp canine tooth, a pale skin with a blood vessel and dead eyes. Its rough skin and long nails were manufactured with latex foam, which was colored like the skin. Third, a monster image as a werewolf was expressed by make-up elements as fur, sharp teeth, changed nails and toenails, a rough skin and a face changed to a wolf. Rubber mask and rubber body suit were manufactured as a make-up of special character and so all its body was changed. Fourth, a psycho murderer and body-deformed man were expressed by make-up elements as a distorted mask, swelled-up and deformed skull and face form, terribly deformed body, discolored and hang down skin and teeth with an indeterminate form. Its body and face were manufactured by the foam latex technology according to make-up design as a make-up of special character.

  • 공연예술은 다양한 영역의 예술 분야가 총체적으로 결합된 장르이다. 무대 분장은 이러한 종합 예술기능의 한 요소이며 배우의 모습을 극중 등장인물로 변화시키고 시각적으로 확대 시켜주어 관객들에게 필요한 성격적 사실을 이해시키는 중요한 의사전달 수단의 역할을 한다. 이러한 극의 내용에 부응하는 극중 인물의 창조적인 분장을 위해서는 의도된 성격과 부합되는 시각적 표현을 위한 분장디자인의 입체적 연구가 필요하다. 하지만 아직도 등장인물의 성격 분장디자인 제작 시 보편적인 기준이 되는 성격 유형별 근거가 거의 없으므로 추상적 감각에 의존하거나 주관에 치우친 개인적 기술 능력으로 디자인을 하게 되는 경우가 대부분이다. 본 논문에서는 특히 분장디자인에서 중요한 "눈과 눈썹디자인"을 중심으로 이론적이고 보편적인 심리학적 성격유형을 극중 인물에 적용시킬 수 있는 성격유형으로 재구성하여 제시하고, 그에 따른 관상학에 근거한 기본적인 외형적 특징을 분석하여, 인물 성격의 표현을 위한 디자인의 틀을 구축함으로써 분장디자인 시 이를 바탕으로 작업을 수행할 수 있는 창조적이고 구체적인 모형을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 분장디자인 제작 시 극중 인물의 성격을 이해하고 그 성격을 배우의 얼굴형에 맞게 표현하는 데 있어 보편적이고 체계화된 분장디자인 모형을 구축함으로써 실제 분장 디자인에 적용시키는데 그 의의를 가진다.

Analysis of Korean and Foreign Special Effects Make-up in Representative Films by Period

  • The purpose of this study is to gather basic data in the special effects make-up field and to provide a source of inspiration for creative make-up design by examining how special effects make-up is developed according to representative films. Two approaches are used in this study: a literature review and an empirical case analysis. In Korea, color TV was introduced in the 1980s, with the demand for a realistic image. Since the 2000s, 3D printing technology has been introduced to special effects make-up. Special effects make-up was first introduced in Hollywood films in the 1890s, and by the 1900s, artificial teeth and eyebrows were added and presented using general make-up techniques. Since then, 3D and 4D technologies and animation performance capture methods have been introduced and distributed due to the rapid development of computer technology.

보철분장에 있어 모델링의 역할 (The Role of Modeling in Prosthetics Make-up)

  • Representing all the parts of human body visible to fit into the script, it can be told that real make-up has been done. Based on the point of view. it will be different from others. To become the beautiful, beauty make-up has to be done, however, to be someone described in the script or any other factions after analyzing characters of being represented, special make-up fits into that category. In the special make-up, there are two different pins: one is 2 dimension make-up which is describing images using dots, lines and colors and other is 3 dimension which will include necessary shapes to figure. Even though there seems to be different between modern technologies and handy work, since accurate measures and graphics have to be used to make perfect character describes in the script, more investments and studies than before have to be made. Real attraction of 3 dimension make-up is building up the images and shapes using unseen abstract images having analyzing characters. It will be decided in the working process called modeling. As having distinguished this part from other make-ups as named prosthetics make-up, proposing means and measures of prosthetics make-up will actually help the others who are studying make-up.

  • 영상을 통한 콘텐츠 유통 활성화는 안성지역 활성화 콘텐츠 산업에서 선순환 구조 구축의 필수조건이다. 2015년 국책 사업을 통해 안성지역 지자체에서 제작되고 있는 특수 영상 콘텐츠 제작의 애니메이션은 지역경제를 활성화시키기 위해 시에서 추진되고 있는 핵심 사업이다. 이 연구는 영상 콘텐츠 개발의 과정에서의 기획고찰과 디자인 작품 제작을 통해 시각적 제안을 하고자 한다. 캐릭터 개발 과정의 창의성 및 독창성을 비롯하여 심미적인 평가와 작품의 타당성, 비평성의 연구는 매우 중요하기에, 점차 활성화되고 있는 특수 영상(3D,4D)에서의 지방자치단체의 일반 기존 제작되어진 캐릭터와는 다른 방향의 캐릭터 개발 발전 방향을 위해서 실질적 개발의 비쥬얼이 제시되어져야 할 연구 과제일 것이다, 아울러 개발 진행 단계와 각 단계별로 평가 기준과 실질적 분석의 기획단계의 과정을 통해 제안된 작품이 주요 결과로서 제시되었다. 각 캐릭터 시안의 대한 기획과정의 연구들이 본론에서 제시되고, 결론부분에서 작품 완성 디자인이 중요하게 다루어 졌으며, 개발 사례에 대한 기획방향과 제시된 특수영상의 캐릭터의 특징들을 자세히 제시하였다. 실질 개발 과정에서의 선택과 평가가 객관적이고 결과 지향적이어야 하기에 특수영상의 실질적 캐릭터 작품을 기획과 결과 과정을 제시하며 발표하는 논문은 중요한 요청을 가지며, 제시된 디자인 결과물로서 실질적 가치 개발 창출에 의미를 가짐으로서 가시적 성과에 기여할 것으로 기대한다.

  • 안동 지역에서의 '원이엄마'를 모티브로 제작된 특수 영상 콘텐츠 애니메이션은 전통소재의 지역 콘텐츠의 발굴과 지적 재산권의 활용에 주요한 사례 연구로서의 가치를 가진다. 한국적 콘텐츠 개발의 과정에서의 사실 요소(FACTOR)와 픽션(FICTION)의 결합은 디자인 개발과 콘텐츠 연구에 중요한 부분으로서 작품 개발에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것이며, 전통 문화 캐릭터 개발 과정에서의 창의성 및 독창성과 함께 프리 프로덕션(Pre-Production)의 과정에서의 원화 기획의 핵심 역할이다. 한국적 콘텐츠는, 개발과정에서 한국적 캐릭터 개발과 함께 지속적으로 심도 있게 다루어 할 연구 과제이다. 여기에 각 캐릭터 디자인 구상과 기획에서의 과정의 고찰이 필요하며, 본 연구의 방향은 콘텐츠의 각 캐릭터 중 주요 주인공 캐릭터 개발의 과정을 통해 전통 문화 캐릭터가 개발되는 과정에 대한 이해와 사항들에 대한 디자인 결과물 연구이다. 의상과 고증을 통한 객관적 캐릭터 개발과정을 제시하여 전통문화 캐릭터 개발에 대한 이해과 방향을 제시하였다. 본론과 결론으로서는 전통적 문양 등의 개발 전체의 기획이 주인공 캐릭터에 어떤 형태로 적용되는지에 대한 과정과 도출, 그리고 세대 연령별에 따른 주인공 각 캐릭터에 대한 디자인이 드로잉 되었고, 안동시와 전통 캐릭터가 전통콘텐츠 창출에 어떤 의미를 가지는 것인지를 제시하였다.
