Evaluating the effective properties of materials containing various types of in-homogeneities is an important issue in the analysis of structures composed of those materials. A simple and effective method for the purpose is to impose the periodic displacement boundary conditions on the finite element model of a unit cell. Their theoretical background is explained based on the purely kinematical relations in the regularly spaced in-homogeneity problems, and the strategies to implement them into the analysis and to evaluate the homogenized material constants are introduced. The creep behavior of a thin sheet with square arrayed rectangular voids is characterized, where the orthotropy is induced by the presence of the voids. The homogenization method is validated through the comparison of the analysis of detailed model with that of the simplified one with the effective parameters.

In this study, finite element modeling was used to predict the material properties of tri-axially braided textile composite. The model was made based on an experimental test specimen which was also used to compare the final results. The full interlacing of tows was geometrically modelled, from which repeating parts that make up the whole braid called unit cells were identified based on the geometric and mechanical property periodicity. In order to simulate the repeating nature of the unit cell, periodic boundary conditions were applied. For validation of the method, a reference model was analyzed for which a very good agreement was obtained. Material property calculation was done by simulating uniaxial and pure shear tests on the unit cell. The comparison of these results with that of experimental test results showed an excellent agreement. Finally, parametric study on the effect of number of plies, stacking type (symmetric/anti-symmetric) and stacking phase shift was conducted.

Structural analysis for materials containing regularly spaced in-homogeneities is usually executed by using averaged material properties. For the homogenization process, a unit cell is defined and loaded somehow, and its response is investigated to evaluate the properties. The imposed loading conditions should accord to the behavior of unit cell immersed in the macroscopic structure in order to guarantee the accuracy of the effective properties. Each unit cell shows periodic variation of strain if the material is loaded uniformly, and in this study, direct implementation of this characteristic behavior is attempted on FE models of unit cell. Conventional finite element analysis tool can be used without any modification, and the boundary of unit cell is constrained in a way that the periodicity is satisfied. The proposed method is applicable to skew arrayed in-homogeneity problems. The flexibility matrix relating tonsorial stress and strain components in skewed rectilinear coordinate system is transformed so that the required engineering constants can be evaluated. Effective properties are computed for the materials with square and skew arrayed circular holes, and its accuracy is examined.

Recently, force measurement systems are commonly used in many industrial fields and the precision of the measurement system is getting more important as the industry needs more precise tools and in struments to make high quality products. However, a high precision force measurement system is hard to make unless we know precisely the causes, quality and quantity of measurement errors in advance. In this work, many possible mechanical causes of measurement errors are reviewed including ratio of length to diameter of sensing part, radius of contact area, radius of bearing part, ratio of material properties and change of boundary conditions. Also, the measurement errors are analyzed by nonlinear finite element method and the nonlinear behavior of the errors are investigated. The results can be used to design force measurement systems and expected to be very useful especially for compact type load cells.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

This paper presents the fast multipole boundary element method (FM-BEM) as a new BEM solution methodology that overcomes many disadvantages of conventional BEM. In conventional BEM, large-scale problems cannot be treated easily because the computation time increases rapidly with an increase in the number of boundary elements owing to the dense coefficient matrix. Analysis results are obtained to compare FM-BEM with conventional BEM in terms of computation time and accuracy for a simple two-dimensional steady-state heat conduction problem. It is confirmed that the FM-BEM solution methodology greatly enhances the computation speed while maintaining solution accuracy similar to that of conventional BEM. As a result, the theory and implementation algorithm of FM-BEM are discussed in this study.
A multiscale method is presented for analysis of thin slab structures in which the microstructures can not be reduced to two-dimensional plane stress models and thus three dimensional treatment of microstructures is necessary. This method is based on the classical asymptotic expansion multiscale approach but with consideration of the special geometric characteristics of the slab structures. This is achieved via a special form of multiscale asymptotic expansion of displacement field. The expanded three dimensional displacement field only exhibits in-plane periodicity and the thickness dimension is in the global scale. Consequently by employing the multiscale asymptotic expansion approach the global macroscopic structural problem and the local microscopic unit cell problem are rationally set up. It is noted that the unit cell is subjected to the in-plane periodic boundary conditions as well as the traction free conditions on the out of plane surfaces of the unit cell. The variational formulation and finite element implementation of the unit cell problem are discussed in details. Thereafter the in-plane material response is systematically characterized via homogenization analysis of the proposed special unit cell problem for different microstructures and the reasoning of the present method is justified. Moreover the present multiscale analysis procedure is illustrated through a plane stress beam example.

Numerical simulations of fluid injection into particulate materials were conducted to observe cavity initiation and propagation using distinct element method. After generation of initial particles and wall elements, confining stress was applied by servo-control method. The fluid scheme solves the continuity and Navior-Stokes equations numerically, then derives pressure and velocity vectors for fixed grid by considering the existence of particles within the fluid cell. Fluid was injected as 7-step into the assembly in the x-direction from the inlet located at the center of the left boundary under confining stress condition, 0.1MPa and 0.5MPa, respectively. For each simulation, movement of particles, flow rate, fluid velocity, pressure history, wall stress including cavity initiation and propagation by interaction of flulid-paricles were analyzed.
We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

Finite element analysis of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out in two and tree dimensions. The new VOF-based numerical algorithm that has been proposed by the present authors was applied to several 2-D and 3-D free surface flow problems. The proposed free surface tracking scheme is based on two numerical tools that have been newly introduced by the present authots; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed numerical algorithm has been applied to 2-D and 3-D cavity filling and sloshing problems, which demonstrated versatility and effectiveness of the new free surface tracking scheme as well as the overall solution procedure. The proposed numerical algorithm resolved successfully the interacting free surface with each other. The simulated results demonstrated the applicability of proposed numerical algorithm to the practical problems of large free surface motion. Also, it has been demonstrated that the proposed free surface tracking scheme can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems and can be extended to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts.
