The fuel cells for portable application are attracted using a liquid fuel such as methanol and chemical hydride solutions. Recently, DBFC [Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell] is a candidate for power of portable electronic devices. In this work, the anion exchange membrane and non-precious catalyst for the DBFC were concerned. Anion-exchange membrane was fabricated by amination of polysulfone followed chloromethylation. Non-precious catalysts such as raney-Ni and Ag were used as an anode and cathode catalyst. The optimum conditions of catalyst slurry mixing and MEA fabrication were developed. The single cell performance using anion exchange membrane and non-precious catalyst was evaluated and the results were compared with cation exchange membrane [Nafion membrane] and precious catalysts.
The electrochemical performance of all vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) using an electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate and a cation exchange membrane (Nafion117) was evaluated. The electrochemical performance of VRFB was measured at a current density of 60 mA/cm2. The average current efficiency of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate was 94.9%, the average voltage efficiency was 82.2%, and the average energy efficiency was 78.0%. In addition, it was confirmed that the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate had almost the same value as the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared with vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4).
The anion exchange membrane using the blending polymer of poly(ether sulfone) and poly(phenylene sulfide sulfone) was prepared. It was confirmed by EDXS and FT-IR analysis that the prepared anion exchange membrane had the -N- as an anion exchange group. The ionic conductivity in 1 mol/L $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution was measured. The ionic conductivity of the prepared anion exchange membrane was 0.015~0.083 S/cm, and had a high value compared with AFN and APS as a commercial anion exchange membrane. Permeabilities of the vanadium ions through the prepared anion exchange membrane were tested to evaluate the possibility as a separator in vanadium redox flow battery. Vanadium ion permeation rate in the prepared anion exchange membrane had a low value compared with Nafion 117 as a commercial cation exchange and AFN as a commercial anion exchange membrane.
This study was carried out to prepare a heterogeneous cation exchange membrane by mixing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), commercial cation exchange resin and sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide)(SPPO) in order to propose an optimum condition for the preparation, and to compare its properties with commercial membrane. Study results show that the ion exchange capacity and electrical resistance were outstanding when the ratio of polymer matrix was less than 30% comparing between PVDF-IER, PVDF-SPPO and PVDF-SPPO-IER. The tensile strength was confirmed that seemed a hard look was five times greater compared to the commercial heterogeneous membrane, despite the weak durability of PVDF resin. Therefore, when chemical and mechanical properties are considered, the optimum mixing ratio between PVDF, IER and SPPO was 30 : 70, at which electric resistance was measured as $3{\sim}5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, ion exchange capacity as 0.6~1.0 meq/g, while mechanical strength was in a range of $12{\sim}15kgf/cm^2$.
The electrochemical properties of Nafion type membranes as a function of temperature to examine the key factors affecting the cathodic protection process at low temperatures was investigated in this study. Variable temperature experiments for AC impedance, DC resistance were conducted. The resistances of 3 Nafion membranes (N 324, N 450, N MAC) were measured in 30% KOH (aq) for a range of temperatures between $-30^{\circ}C$ and room temperature. Membrane resistance increases exponentially with decreasing temperature. This behaviour is most significant at operational temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$. These membranes are stable under the low temperature and caustic conditions of the heat exchange system, but they place a much higher restriction on the cathodic protection of the stainless heat exchange stack. N 450 has the lowest AC impedence and DC resistance at temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$ and consequently is most suitable membrane of the three, for low temperature applications.

It has been known that transport characteristics of ions are very complicated in CEDI system due to the inter-relations between ion exchange media and solution. Thus, this study sought to determine the ionic mobility of cobalt ion through cation exchange textile under electroregeneration and consequently verify the transport mechanisms of cobalt ion in a CEDI system.(omitted)
In this study, heterogeneous ion exchange membranes were prepared by mixing cation or anion exchange resins and commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for MCDI process. The mixing ratios of PVDF and ion exchange resins were 1 : 1, 1.4 : 1, 2 : 1, and 3 : 1. We characterized SEM, water content, ion exchange capacity, methanol permeability, and ion conductivity. In the viewpoint of membrane characterization, the blending ratio of 2 : 1 showed the best. For the blending ratio of 2 : 1, heterogeneous cation exchange membrane showed the water content 34%, ion exchange capacity 1.54 meq/g, ion conductivity 0.019 S/cm, and methanol permeability $2.28{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}8.86{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/s$ while In the case of heterogeneous anion exchange membrane, the result showed 37%, 2.18 meq/g, and 0.034 S/cm and $1.46{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}8.66{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/s$.
Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) has recently gained increasing attention for the recovery and production of acids or bases from the corresponding salt solutions and other high value-added business like food processing and biochemical industry. EDBM possesses economical and environmental benefits and can complex with other process such as ion exchange process, extraction and adsorption. So this paper investigates a brief overview of development for bipolar membrane and EDBM with the practical application.
In order to improve current efficiency and decrease energy consumption in the electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate, electrolytic properties of four cation exchange membranes, namely, the $JCM-II^{(R)}$ membrane, $Nafion^{(R)}$ 324 membrane CMI-$7000^{(R)}$ membrane and a self-made perfluorosulfonic ion exchange membrane (PGN membrane) were investigated using a sintered platinized titanium anode and a Pb-Sb-Sn alloy cathode in a self-made electrolytic cell. The effect of cell voltage and electrolyte flow rate on the current efficiency and the energy consumption were investigated. The results indicated that the PGN membrane could improve current efficiency to 94.85% and decrease energy consumption to $1119kWh\;t^{-1}$ (energy consumption per ton of the ammonium persulfate generated) under the optimal operating conditions and the highest current efficiency of the $JCM-II^{(R)}$ membrane, $Nafion^{(R)}$ 324 membrane and CMI-$7000^{(R)}$ membrane were 80.73%, 77.76% and 73.22% with their lowest energy consumption of $1323kWh\;t^{-1}$, $1539kWh\;t^{-1}$ and $2256kWh\;t^{-1}$, respectively. The PGN membrane has the advantages of high current efficiency and energy power consumption and has sufficient mechanical strength with the reinforced mesh. Therefore the PGN membrane will has good value in popularization in the industrial electrosynthesis of ammonium persulfate in the future.
The bipolar membrane is an ion exchange membrane consisting of a cation exchange layer, an anion exchange layer, and an interface layer, and is a membrane that generates protons and hydroxide ions based on water dissociation characteristics. Using these properties, research is being conducted in various application fields such as the chemical industry, food processing, environmental protection, and energy conversion and storage. This paper investigated the concept of bipolar membrane, water dissociation mechanism, and water dissociation catalyst to provide a comprehensive understanding of bipolar membrane technology, were investigated. Lastly, we also investigated the bipolar membrane process that has been recently applied to energy technology.
