Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of social support and emotional intelligence in the relationship between emotional labor and burnout among clinical nurses. Methods: The sample for this study consisted of 382 nurses from four hospitals located in Seoul or Gyunggi Province. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, Pearson Correlation, Hierarchical Multiple Regression, and Path Analysis. Results: It was found that: (a) emotional labor had a positive effect on burnout, while social support and emotional intelligence had negative effects on burnout; (b) social support and emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between emotional labor and burnout, and (c) social support mediated the relationship between emotional labor and burnout, whereas emotional intelligence did not. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that high levels of support had a buffering effect and mitigated the negative effects of the emotional labor on burnout. Therefore, strategies to enhance social support for nurses are needed and further research needs to be done to refine this study.
Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to examine school health teachers' burnout, engagement, job demands and job resources and to identify the factors that influence burnout and engagement. Methods: The participants were 222 school health teachers working in elementary, middle or high schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The significant factors influencing burnout were rewards (${\beta}=-.51$), autonomy (${\beta}=-.15$), and job demands (${\beta}=.13$). These factors explained 42% of the variance in burnout. The significant factors influencing engagement were feedback (${\beta}=.49$), rewards (${\beta}=.21$), type of employment (${\beta}=.15$) and autonomy (${\beta}=.13$). These factors explained 49% of the variance in engagement. Conclusion: The study showed that job demands increase burnout, while job resources such as rewards and autonomy alleviate it. In addition, job resources, such as feedback, rewards and autonomy, increase engagement among school health teachers. Therefore, in order to reduce burnout and increase engagement among school health teachers, it is necessary to reduce the level of job demands and to provide enough job resources such as rewards, autonomy and feedback by improving the job environment.
Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive, cross-sectional study was to examine relationships among emotional labor, self-efficacy, and burnout of employees in public health centers. Factors that influence burnout of workers were also assessed. Methods: One hundred sixty six workers in public health centers completed a pack of self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA along with $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Employees in public health centers seemed to experience emotional labor to some extent. There were statistically significant differences in burnout depending on the age of workers. Employees' burnout had a positive relationship with emotional labor and a negative relationship with self-efficacy. Factors influencing burnout of employees in public health centers were emotional dissonance, surveillance & monitoring of organization, age, and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Considering the findings from this study, health care providers need to develop effective interventions which increase the level of self-efficacy and decrease certain types of emotional labor for employees in public health centers and to help them effectively manage burnout.
Purpose: This study was a survey to provide basic data about nursing interventions for improving the quality of life among family caregivers for the elderly by examining their care burden, burnout, and quality of life, and by confirming the correlation between each of them. Method: The subjects were 215 people in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province who understood the purpose of this study and participated voluntarily from April 1 to June 4, 2007. Data was analyzed by the SAS program. Result: 1. Concerning primary caregivers of the elderly, it was found that their care burden was slightly high, burnout was high and quality of life was good on the whole. 2. When it comes to the correlation among care burden, burnout, and quality of life among family caregivers, it was found that burnout increases in proportion to care burden, quality of life decreases as care burden increases, and bigger burnout leads to a lower quality of life. Conclusion: The quality of life among primary caregivers should be improved by reducing their care burden and burnout. Thereby, a priority might be considered for admission to nearby, comfortable nursing homes or failing that, home visiting services, rather than family support in the home.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of occupational stress and coping styles on burnout of clinical nurses. Methods: The participants in this study were 397 nurses, working at the hospitals in Seoul, Gangwon, and Gyongbuk provinces. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from November, 2009 to January, 2010. The SPSS WIN 13.0 version program was used for data analysis. Results: The most significant predictors of burnout were positive reappraisal and work load. Work load, resource inadequacy, role ambiguity, and indifference coping style positively correlated with burnout. Positive reappraisal and problem-focused coping styles negatively correlated with burnout. Conclusion: The study results indicate that it is important to reduce work load, resource inadequacy, and role ambiguity in nurses and to strengthen their positive reappraisal and problem-focused coping styles to prevent burnout. This could be achieved with job redesign, modification of shift work systems, and by offering burnout prevention program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental stress, social support, and coping behavior on burnout among mothers caring for children with cerebral palsy. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional, descriptive study were 185 mothers who completed a self-report structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses with IBM SPSS Win 22 program. Results: Parental stress and coping behavior were strong predictors of burnout among mothers of children with cerebral palsy. These variables explained 50.0% of the variance in burnout. Social support was not a predictor of burnout. A higher level of burnout was associated with higher levels of parental stress and lower levels of social support and coping behavior. Conclusion: Mothers of children with cerebral palsy are vulnerable to burnout. These results show that effective strategies for reducing parental stress and improving positive coping behavior are needed to reduce burnout in these mothers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of emotional labor on burnout in stroke patients' caregivers. Methods: Data were collected from 141 paid caregivers working at 3 hospital across Gyeonggi province from January to April 2014. Results: The caregivers' level of emotional labor showed 2.9/5.0 points and burnout, 2.5/5.0. A significant correlation was found among attentiveness to required display rules (p=.007), emotional dissonance (p=.001) and burnout. In a multiple regression, age (${\beta}$=.279, p=.001) and emotional dissonance (${\beta}$=.193, p=.046) were associated with burnout in caregivers. These factors attributed to 16.9% of variance in the burnout of caregivers. Conclusion: These results suggest that burnout in stroke patients' caregivers can be influenced by emotional dissonance as well as physical condition such as age. Accordingly, it is necessary to be develop support program to deal with mental labor to improve their mental health and lighten their workload for caregivers.
Based on the Job Demand-Control model which was proposed by R. A. Karasek, this study was designed to investigate the relationships among job demand, job control, and job burnout of nurses. In addition, the other aim of the present study was to test the moderating or buffering role of social supports in the relationship between the job demand and job burnout. The analysis based on data collected from 239 nurses who are working in two general hospitals has produced the following results. We found that job demand was primarily related to the exhaustion component of burnout, whereas (lack of) job control was related to the disengagement dimension of burnout. And social supports from the supervisor attenuated the disengagement, whereas social supports from the colleague diminished the exhaustion. But, we found no interaction effects that were expected in the hypotheses. Specifically, social supports didn't buffer the negative effects of job demand on burnout, while job control had the moderating effect which was in opposite direction. The implications of these analyses and limitations of the study were then discussed.
Objectives: This study aims to serve as basic data for improving human resource management and the quality of work at dental hospitals and clinics by examining the relationship among clinical dental hygienists' emotional labor, job stress, and turnover intention. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 220 dental hygienists in hospitals and clinics from March 11 to April 26, 2019. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0. For participants' burnout, job stress, emotional labor, and turnover intention based on general and occupational characteristics were analyzed using a t-test and one-way ANOVA. After performing a one-way ANOVA, a Duncan test was performed for mean comparison. Pearson's correlation analysis was conducted to determine correlations between variables, and stepwise multiple regression was performed to examine the factors that affect burnout. Results: Clinical dental hygienists' mean burnout was 3.05 points, and the factors that affect such burnout were turnover intention, job stress, and emotional labor. Burnout was higher when job satisfaction was low, turnover intention was low, and emotional labor was high, with a 29.3% explanatory power. Conclusions: For effective human resource management of dental hygienists, it is necessary to develop and implement programs that can reduce emotional labor and burnout.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of early childhood teachers' job satisfaction and burnout by variables and to analyze the relationship between the two subject matters. Then this study will serve to improve overall quality of early childhood education through fair comprehension about them. We surveyed 333 teachers in total, 171 public/private kindergarten teachers and 162 preschool teachers. A questionnaire by ECJSS of Jord-Bloom(1989) and Fleischer(1985) was used to measure the degree of job satisfaction, along with the version MBI(Maslach Burnout Inventory) by Maslach and Jackson(1981), adjusted by An, youngkil(I992) and Seo, jiyoung(2002), to check the degree of burnout. It was found that job satisfaction was higher among the surveyees of old age or with more education/less working hours. Small salaries, however, was one of the causes of low job satisfaction. Emotional burnout was shown in the surveyees of old age or with good education/career records. On the other hand, exhaustion from a lack of accomplishment was shown in single, young and low paid teachers. Thus, burnout and job satisfaction had a highly negative coefficient of correlation, meaning that job satisfaction gets high when burnout gets low.
