Artificial fine aggregates (denoted AFA) were fabricated using spent bleaching clay (denoted SBC) generated from processed vegetable oil and stone sludge (denoted SS) produced from crushed aggregate manufacturing materials for use as functional construction materials. Each raw material was crushed to particle size finer than $150{\mu}m$, and fine spherical pellets of approximately 1 ~ 4 mm in diameter were prepared by a pelletizing process. The physical properties of the AFA were measured with different types of sintering equipment. A new type of vertical furnace that sinters fine aggregates in a fluidized bed at high temperatures was designed and tested. AFA sintered in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.5g/cm^3$ and a water absorption of 16%. AFA sintered in the vertical furnace at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.9g/cm^3$ and water absorption of 8.5%. The bulk density of the AFA sintered in the vertical furnace showed a bulk density 27% higher and water absorption 47% lower than those of AFA sintered in the rotary kiln.

This high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction study examined the change of bulk modulus of C-S-H(I), core material creating strength in alkali-activated slag cement as well as structural model of C-S-H, mainly attributed to Al-substitution for Si, which occurs at the bridging tetrahedral sites in dreierketten silicate chains in the nanostructure of C-S-H(I). This study presents that Al-substitution in C-S-H(I) does not affect the bulk modulus of C-S-H(I), which is surprising because many researchers have expected that Al-substitution should induce some critical change in mechanical properties of C-S-H(I).

The goal of this paper is to investigate preliminary the applicability of 3D printing technologies for the development of the hot bulk forming process and die. 3D printing technology based on the plastic material was applied to the preform design of the hot forging process. Plastic hot forging dies were fabricated by Polyjet process for the physical simulation of the workpiece deformation. The feasibility of application of Laser-aided Direct Metal Rapid Tooling (DMT) process to the fabrication of the hot bulk metal forming die was investigated. The SKD61 hot-working tool steel was deposited on the heat treated SKD61 using the DMT process. Fundamental characteristics of SKD 61 hot-working tool steel deposited specimen were examined via hardness and wear experiments as well as the observation of the morphology. Using the results of the examination of fundamental characteristics, the applicability of the DMT process to manufacture hot bulk forming die was discussed.

A Pt-skin $Pt_3Ni$(111) surface was reported to show high catalytic activity. In this study, we investigated the magnetic properties and electronic structures of the various oriented surfaces of bulk-terminated and Pt-segregated $Pt_3Ni$ by using a first-principles calculation method. The magnetic moments of Pt and Ni are appreciably enhanced at the bulk-terminated surfaces compared to the corresponding bulk values, whereas the magnetic moment of Pt on the Pt-segregated $Pt_3Ni$(111) surface is just slightly enhanced because of the reduced number of Ni neighboring atoms. Spin-decomposed density of states shows that the dz2 orbital plays a dominant role in determining the magnetic moments of Pt atoms in the different orientations. The lowering of the d-band center energy (-2.22 eV to -2.46 eV to -2.51 eV to -2.65 eV) in the sequence of bulk-terminated (100), (110), (111), and Pt-segregated (111) may explain the observed dependence of catalytic activity on surface orientation. Our d-band center calculation suggests that an observed enhanced catalytic activity of a $Pt_3Ni$(111) surface originates from the Pt-segregation.

Recently, a new cellular metal, WBK(Wire woven Bulk Kagome) has been introduced. WBK is fabricated by assembling metal wires in six directions into a Kagome-like truss structure and by brazing it at all the crossings. Wires as the raw material are easy to handle and to attain high strength with minimum defect. And the strength and energy absorption are superior to previous cellular metals. Therefore, WBK seems to be promising once the fabrication process for mass production is developed. In this paper, an upper bound solution for the mechanical properties of the bulk WBK under compression is presented. In order to simulate uniform behavior of WBK consisted of perfectly uniform cells, a unit cell of WBK with periodic boundary conditions is analyzed by the finite element method. In comparison with experimental test results, it is found that the solution provides a good approximation of the mechanical properties of bulk WBK cellular metals except for Young's modulus. And also, the brazing joint size does not have any significant effect on the properties with an exception of an idealized thin joint.

Ru dye (Z-907) is a crucial photosensitizing material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To enhance the utilization of Ru dye's photosensitizing properties in bulk heterojunction solar cells, a method was developed to synthesize phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) nanoparticles that are chemically linked to Ru dye. PCBM contains a methoxy (-OCH3) group, whereas Ru dye incorporates a carboxyl group (-COOH) within its molecular structure. By exploiting these complementary functional groups, a successful bond between Ru dye and PCBM was established through an anhydride functional group. The coupling of PCBM with Ru dye results in a modification of the energy levels, yielding lower LUMO (3.8 eV) and HOMO (6.1 eV) levels, compared with the LUMO (3.0 eV) and HOMO (5.2 eV) levels of Ru dye alone. This configuration potentially facilitates efficient electron transfer from Ru dye to PCBM, alongside promoting hole transfer from Ru dye to the conducting polymer. Consequently, the bulk heterojunction solar cells incorporating this Ru dye-PCBM configuration demonstrate superior performance, with an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.62 V, short circuit current (Jsc) of 0.63 mA cm-2, fill factor (FF) of 65.6%, and a photovoltaic conversion efficiency (η) of 0.25%.
The influence of surface elasticity and surface residual stress on the elastic field of an isotropic nanoscale elastic layer of finite thickness bonded to a rigid material base is considered by employing the Gurtin-Murdoch continuum theory of elastic material surfaces. The fundamental solutions corresponding to buried vertical and horizontal line loads are obtained by using Fourier integral transform techniques. Selected numerical results are presented for the cases of a finite elastic layer and a semi-infinite elastic medium to portray the influence of surface elasticity and residual surface stress on the bulk stress field. It is found that the bulk stress field depends significantly on both surface elastic constants and residual surface stress. The consideration of out-of-plane terms of the surface stress yields significantly different solutions compared to previous studies. The solutions presented in this study can be used to examine a variety of practical problems involving nanoscale/soft material systems and to develop boundary integral equations methods for such systems.

In this study, the possibility of the use of a new raw material in paperboard industry was investigated. Fly ash is one of the residues generated in the combustion of coal and generally captured from the chimney of coal-fired power plant. This material is utilized in many industries including cement, soil stabilization, composite etc., but it is not used in paper industry. Three types of fly ashes were collected from Hadong, boryeong and Seocheon steam power plants and we investigated their properties by scanning electron micrographs and particle size distribution. Papers were manufactured with KOCC and fly ashes, and the physical properties such as bulk, tensile strength, internal bond strength and ISO brightness were measured to identify the effects of fly ash on the paper properties.
This study explored the possibility of porous Si (PS) formed by indirect electrode anodization used for effective isolation material for radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC). We investigated the effect of current density and reaction time on the porosity size and depth, and X-ray diffraction of bulk Si and porous Si to evaluate the change in lattice parameter. Porosity size and depth usually increases with an increase in the current density and reaction time. PS increases the lattice parameter of Si compared to the bulk Si which causes the compressive stress of around 8 MPa. PS formed by the method is believed to be suitable for isolation material for RFIC because it is simple process as well as good compatibility to Si VLSI process.

The present study investigates the thermal characteristics of a nanoscale superconductor material. A thin-film of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7-x$ was deposited on a $SrTiO_3$ substrate by using a pulsed-laser deposition technique and characterized using an ultrafast laser system. In order to extract a thermal conductivity value, a numerical solution for a transient one-dimensional heat conduction equation was obtained using a finite-difference method. The curve-fit shows a value 1.2 W/mK, which is relatively lower than those of bulk materials. This research provides a material property of superconductor thin-film required for the thermal design of micro or nanodevices.
