For the vibration control of earthquake-excited buildings, an optimal design method of integrated control system considering soil-structure interaction is studied in this paper. Interaction between soils and the base of the building is simply modeled as lumped parameters and equations of motion are derived. The equations of motion are transformed into the state space equations and the probabilistic excitations such as Kanai-Tajumi power spectral density function is introduced. Then an optimization problem is formulated as finding hybrid or integrated control systems which minimizes the stochastic responses of the building structure for given constraints. In order to investigate the feasibility of the optimization method, an example design and numerical simulations are performed with tenstory building. Finally, numerical results are compared with a conventional design case that soil-structure interaction is not considered.

Viscoelastic dampers have been successfully applied in building structures to reduce vibration by wind and earthquakes. It may be inefficient or be uneconomical that viscoelastic damper is installed at each story of building structures. Although the number of viscoelastic dampers is reduced, if viscoelastic dampers are installed at only suitable places in building structures, vibration would be controlled by efficiency. In this paper, responses of building structures according to the situation of viscoelastic dampers are compared. Then efficient and economical arrangements of viscoelastic dampers are proposed.

In active vibration control of building, controller design considering both control input saturation of controller and parameter uncertainties of building is needed. In our previous research, we proposed a robust saturation controller which guarantees robust stability and control performance of the uncertain linear time-invariant system in the presence of control input saturation. In this paper, the availability of the robust saturation controller for the building with an active mass damper (AMD) system is verified through experimental tests. Experimental tests are carried oui using a two-story building model with a hydraulic-type AMD.

To control the motion of building structures under earthquakes their response should be measured first by various sensors and transformed into the control forces using some control algorithms. Of many control algorithms linear quadratic control is widely used as it is easy to implement and analyze. However the algorithms has the disadvantage that it needs the real-time measurements of all state variables(i.e, building's displacements and velocities) which are difficult to achieve for the building structures under earthquakes. Thus the practical algorithms employing output feedback are developed. In this paper LQG algorithm is used for the control of the building model with an active mass driver. The building's acceleration is used to obtain the control gain and the Kalman filter gain. The LQG control strategy is verified with the experimental study on the one-storybuilding model equipped with the active mass driver. This paper demonstrates experimentally the efficacy of the LQG algorithm based on the active mass driver system in reducing the response of seismically excited buildings.

In recently, sky-bridge are often applied to high-rised adjacent buildings for pedestrian bridge. the seisnic response control of adjacent buildings have been studied and magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been applied to seismic response control. In this study, vibration control effect of the MR damper connected adjacent buildings has been investigated. Adjacent building structures with different natural frequencies were used as example structures. Two typed of control methods, displacement based or velocity based, are applied to determinate control force of MR damper. In this numerical analysis, it has been shown that displacement-based control algorithm is more effective than velocity-based control algorithm for seismic response control of adjacent buildings. And, when displacement-based control method is applied to control of adjacent buildings, the control of building occurred large displacement is more efficient in reducing the seismic response.

The active structural control has emerged as structural safety of structures against natural loadings such as earthquake and wind loadings. Of many control algorithms, Sliding-Mode Control (SMC) can design both linear controller and nonlinear controller. The robustness against parameter variations as well as excitation uncertainties that is imparted to the SMC due to its nonlinear control action, could make SMC an attractive control algorithm when dealing with structures where the external excitation constitutes the main uncertainty in the system. This paper demonstrates experimentally the efficacy of the SMC algorithm based on the active mass driver system in reducing the response of seismically excited buildings. The SMC control strategy is verified with the experimental study on the one-story building model equipped with the active mass driver.

A variety of noise control methods have been developed as an interest on noise issues increases. Among them, noise control methods using masking effect, a phenomenon to reduce the ability to notice the unwanted sound by proper sound, to implement a pleasant sound environment have been studied under the name of soundscape. We proposed a novel vector base amplitude panning(VBAP) based noise control method to apply to the building environment. The proposed method could improve the amenity inside the building to reproduce the sounds with excellent masking effect on the incoming path of noise using the control speakers, considering the direction of noise source. The directional masking sounds can be generated by using VBPA technique. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we carried out the subjective test for the degree of amenity according to direction of the masking sound. Subjective test results showed that it is possible to improve the amenity inside the building by controlling the direction of masking sound considering the human's auditory characteristic.

This is a preliminary study for the real-time feedback vibration control of building structures. The study developed a wireless acceleration sensor system based on authentic technology capacities, to integrate with the Prototype AMD system and ultimately construct the feedback vibration control system. These systems were used to evaluate the basic performance levels of the control systems within model building structures. For this purpose, the study first developed a wireless acceleration sensor unit that integrates an MEMS sensor device and bluetooth communication module. Also, the study developed an operating program that enables control output based on real-time acceleration response measurement and control law. Furthermore, the Prototype AMD and motor driver system were constructed to be maneuvered by the AC servo-motor. Eventually, all these compositions were used to evaluate the real-time feedback vibration control system of a 2-story model building, and qualitatively measure the extent of vibrational reduction of the target structure within the laboratory validation tests. As a result of the tests, there was a definite vibrational reduction effect within the laboratory validation tests. As a result of the tests, there was a definite vibrational reduction effect within 1st and 2nd resonance frequency as well as the random frequency of the model building structure. Ultimately, this study confirmed the potential of its wireless acceleration sensor system and AMD system as an effective tool that can be applied to the active vibration control of other structures.

Passive control may not provide enough damping for a stay cable since the control devices are often restricted to a low location level. In order to enhance control performance of conventional passive dampers, a new type of damper integrated with a rotary electromagnetic damper providing variable damping force and a flywheel serving as an inertial mass, called the rotary electromagnetic inertial mass damper (REIMD), is presented for suppressing the cable vibrations in this paper. The mechanical model of the REIMD is theoretically derived according to generation mechanisms of the damping force and the inertial force, and further validated by performance tests. General dynamic characteristics of an idealized taut cable with a REIMD installed close to the cable end are theoretically investigated, and parametric analysis are then conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass and damping coefficient on vibration control performance. Finally, vibration control tests on a scaled cable model with a REIMD are performed to further verify mitigation performance through the first two modal additional damping ratios of the cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of the cable with the REIMD are much better than those of conventional passive viscous dampers, which mainly attributes to the increment of the damper displacement due to the inertial mass induced negative stiffness effects of the REIMD. Moreover, it is concluded that both inertial mass and damping coefficient of an optimum REIMD will decrease with the increase of the mode order of the cable, and oversize inertial mass may lead to negative effect on the control performance.
