Powder blasting technique has been considered one of the most appropriate micro machining methods for hard and brittle materials, since the productivity is high and the heat layers caused by material removal are very thin. Recent development of special purposed parts, such as the parts for semiconductor processing, the parts for LCD, sensors for micro machine fabrication and so on, has been expanded. Thus, it is essential to develop powder blasting technologies for micromachining of hard and brittle materials such as glass, ceramics and so on. In this paper, the characteristics of powder blasted glass surface were tested under various blasting parameters. Finally, we proposed a predictive model for powder blasting process using the neural network and the response surface method. Detail analysis of the simulation results is carried out and the performance of two predictive models is compared.
Recently, due to the development of MEMS technology, researches for the production of effective micro structures and shapes have been actively conducted. However, the process technology based on chemical etching has a number of problems such as environmental pollution and time problems due to multi-process. Various processes to cope with this process are being studied, and one of the mechanical etching processes is the powder blasting process. This process is a method of spraying fine particles, which has the advantage of being an effective process in manufacturing hard brittle materials. However, it is also a process that adversely affects the material surface roughness and material properties due to the impact of the injection of fine particles. In this study, after fabricating micro-channels in fused silica glass with excellent optical properties among the hard brittle materials, we used the nano indentation system to analyze the micro parts using nano-particles as well as machinability and surface roughness analysis of the processed surface. The analysis was performed for the effective processing of powder blasting.
Ultrasonic machining technology has been developed over recent years for the manufacture of cost-effective and quality-assured precision parts for several industrial application such as optics, semiconductors, aerospace, and automobile. Ultrasonic machining process is an efficient and economical means of precision machining of ceramic materials. The process is non-thermal, non-chemical and non-electric md hardly creates changes to the mechanical properties of the brittle materials machined. This paper describes the characteristics of the micro-hole of $Al_2O_3$ by ultrasonic machining with tungsten carbide tool. The effects of various parameters of ultrasonic machining, including abrasives, machining force and pressure, on the material removal rate, hole quality, and tool wear presented and discussed. The ultrasonic Machining of micro-holes in ceramics has been under taken and the machining mechanism in the ultrasonic machining of ceramics based on the fracture-mechanics concept has been analyzed.
Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon liber/bismaleimide (BMI) composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with acoustic emission (AE). Since BMI is rather difficult matrix to apply for the conventional fragmentation test because of its too low elongation and too brittle and high modulus properties, dual matrix composite system was applied. After carbon fiber/BMI composite was prepared for rod shape by controlling differing curing stage, composites rod was embedded in toughened epoxy as outer matrix. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break, matrix cracking, and interlayer failure were observed during tensile testing, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed during compressive test. On the other hand, AE amplitudes of BMI matrix fracture were higher than carbon fiber tincture under tensile test because BMI matrix has very brittle and high modulus. The waveform of signals coming from BMI matrix fractures was consistent with AE amplitude result under tensile tests.
In machining of ceramic materials, they are very difficult-to cut materials because of there high strength and hardness. Machining of ceramics are characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. Generally, ceramics are machined using conventional method such as grinding and polishing. However these processes are generally costly and have low MRR(material removal rate). This paper focuses on machinability evaluation of machinable ceramics for products with CNC machining center. Thus, in this paper, experiment applying cutting parameters is performed based on experimental design method. A design and analysis of experiments is conducted to study the effects of these parameters on the surface roughness by using the S/N ratio, analysis of ANOVA, and F-test. And multiple linear regression analysis is applied to compare experimental with predicted data in consideration of surface roughness. Cutting parameters, namely, feed, cutting speed and depth of cut are used to accomplish purpose of this paper. Required experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.
Presently, abrasive processing is on eof several methods for cutting and grinding brittle materials, and high quality in dimensional accuracy and surface roughness are often required as a structural components, therefore most of them has to be ground. In manufacturing of tungsten-carbide components, grinding by diamond wheel is usually adopted in order to provide configurational and dimensional accuracy to the components. The present study proposes the experi- mental research of optimum condition to the high quality surface grinding of the WC-Co material using diamond abrasive wheel in order to minimize the damage on the ground surface and to pursue the precise dimension by conventional grinding machine. Brief investigation is carried out to decrease the dressing is constant, theoretical grinding effect such as machining precision is changed according to the speed of workpiece. Accordingly, normal and tangential grinding forces, which are Fn, Ft were analyzed for the machining processes of WC-Co material to obtain optimum grinding conditions, 3-point bending test is carried out to check machining damage on the ground surface layer, which is one of sintered brittle materials.
The mechanical properties of alkali resistance (AR) glass fiber reinforced cement(GFRC) under different curing conditions were investigated in this study. The specimens were formed by extrusion process, and then steam cured and autoclaved. An autoclaved specimen showed the elastic-brittle behavior up to 4% of fiber volume fraction. However, it was found that the fracture behavior for cured specimen was changed to the elastic-plastic with crack branches fracture at greater than 3 vol.% of fiber.
A 3-ply clad metal consisting of aluminum and copper was fabricated by roll bonding process and the microstructures and mechanical properties of the roll-bonded and post-roll-bonding heat treated Cu/Al/Cu clad metal were investigated. A brittle interfacial reaction layer formed at the Cu/Al interfaces at and above $400^{\circ}C$. The thickness of the reaction layer increased from $12{\mu}m$ at $400^{\circ}C$ to $28{\mu}m$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The stress-strain curves demonstrated that the strength decreased and the ductility increased with heat treatment up to $400^{\circ}C$. The clad metal heat treated at $300^{\circ}C$ with no indication of a reaction layer exhibited an excellent combination of the strength and ductility and no delamination of layers up to final fracture in the tensile testing. Above $400^{\circ}C$, the ductility decreased rasxpidly with little change of strength, reflecting the brittle nature of the intermetallic interlayers. In Cu/Al/Cu clad heat treated above $400^{\circ}C$, periodic parallel cracks perpendicular to the stress axis were observed at the interfacial reaction layer. In-situ optical microscopic observation revealed that cracks were formed in the Cu layer due to the strain concentration in the vicinity of horizontal cracks in the intermetallic layer, promoting the premature fracture of Cu layer. Vertical cracks parallel to the stress axis were also formed at 15% strain at $500^{\circ}C$, leading to the delamination of the Cu and Al layers.
FRP-concrete composite slab is consisted of brittle materials and then shows brittle failure mechanism. This study suggests a new design approach that FRP-concrete composite slab leads to ductile failure, and investigates their failure behaviors for two types of section by numerical analysis. Box-type section is higher than I-type section in load capacity to required FRP quantity. Each section was designed so that the strain of FRP plate is 50% to its ultimate strain on initiation of concrete crushing, and it is verified that displacement ductility is more than two. Ductility capacity can be improved by reducing the strain of FRP on initiation of concrete crushing, but as the strain of FRP is reduced load capacity to required FRP quantity is also reduced. Therefore section optimization study is needed considering safety and economical efficiency.
Concrete are brittle materials and they are which come to brittle fracture rapidly by progress of cracks. Therefore, what the time for repairing the damage portion is understands importantly by such cracks. When they happened the glass pipe similar to concrete was used. Such a glass pipe can insert repair material in an inside, or can use it by switch. They are interested in the crack monitoring of structure using FM radio sensor and PZT sensor. In this study, the monitoring to a crack was studied using FM radio sensor and PZT sensor. Therefore, the purpose of this study is the fundamental research which detects damages of main members using the compound sensor which consisted of the radio sensors of resistance, PZT, and FM system.
