  • In this paper, spatial decay estimates for the time dependent compressible viscous isentropic flow in a semi-infinite three dimensional pipe are derived. An upper bound for the total energy in terms of the initial boundary data is obtained as well. The results established in this paper may be viewed as a version of Saint-Venant's principle in transient compressible Navier-Stokes flow.

  • This paper addresses estimating the frequency of a cisoid in the presence of white Gaussian noise, which has numerous applications in communications, radar, sonar, and instrumentation and measurement. Due to the nonlinear nature of the frequency estimation problem, there is threshold effect, that is, large error estimates or outliers will occur at sufficiently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Utilizing the ideas of averaging to increase SNR and weighted linear prediction, an optimal frequency estimator with smaller threshold SNR is developed. Computer simulations are included to compare its mean square error performance with that of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, improved weighted phase averager, generalized weighted linear predictor, and single weighted sample correlator as well as Cramer-Rao lower bound. In particular, with smaller computational requirement, the proposed estimator can achieve the same threshold and estimation performance of the ML method.

  • In this paper we consider open queueing system with a Poisson arrival process which have a finite upper bound on the arrival rate for which the system is stable. Interpolation approximations for quantities of interest, such as moments of the sojourn time distribution, have previously been developed for such systems, utilizing exact light and heavy traffic limits. These limits cannot always be easily computed for complex systems. Thus we consider an interpolation approximation where all of the relevant information is estimated via simulation. We show that all the relevant information can in fact be simultaneously estimated in a single regenerative simulation at any arrival rate. In addition to light and heavy traffic limits, both the quantity of interest and its derivative (with respect to the arrival rate) are estimated at the arrival rate of the simulation. All of the estimates are then combined, using a least squares procedure, to provide an interpolation approximation.

  • This paper is to empirically test scope effects proposed to judge the internal consistency of contingent valuation method. The application was illustrated for the case of estimating people's WTP for improving water quality at Man Kyoung River in the Chon Buk area. The CV survey was carefully designed and implemented by carrying out recommendations from the NOAA Blue Ribbon panel. Using a split sample, we conducted the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test with the frequency distribution of no responses, calculated the Turnbull low bound mean for WTP, and measured the mean WTP from estimated variation functions. The test results consistently exhibited that the CV estimates of WTP were adequately responsive to the size of water quality changes being offered. The mean WTP for improving water quality suitable for swimming (5,171 and 5,212 won) was significantly larger than that for agricultural use and fishing activity (3,280 and 3,136 won).

  • We consider meromorphic solutions of q-difference equations of the form $$\sum_{j=o}^{n}a_j(z)f(q^jz)=a_{n+1}(z),$$ where $a_0(z)$, ${\ldots}$, $a_{n+1}(z)$ are meromorphic functions, $a_0(z)a_n(z)$ ≢ 0 and $q{\in}\mathbb{C}$ such that 0 < |q| ${\leq}$ 1. We give a new estimate on the upper bound for the length of the gap in the power series of entire solutions for the case 0 < |q| < 1 and n = 2. Some growth estimates for meromorphic solutions are also given in the cases 0 < |q| < 1. Moreover, we investigate zeros and poles of meromorphic solutions for the case |q| = 1.

  • This paper analyzes the $h{\times}p$ version of the finite element method for optimal control problems constrained by elliptic partial differential equations with random inputs. The main result is that the $h{\times}p$ error bound for the control problems subject to stochastic partial differential equations leads to an exponential rate of convergence with respect to p as for the corresponding direct problems. Numerical examples are used to confirm the theoretical results.

  • The longitudinal flight parameters of a light airplane are estimated from flight test data by use of the output error method. The reliability of the flight test measurement is examined in engineering judgment, scatter and Cramer-Rao bound, which turns out to be satisfactory with minor defects. Estimated parameter values are validated by comparing the simulated responses with the ones from actual flight tests. The FTD(Flight Training Device) of a light airplane turns out to satisfy the qualification of FAA Level 5 FTD in longitudinal motion. All the necessary practices for generation of high-fidelity data in longitudinal motion of a light aircraft are successfully performed in this study.

  • In this paper, we design a robust adaptive controller for a nonlinear system with uncertainties to be rejected via disturbance adaptation law. The nonlinear system considered has unknown nonlinear functions being influenced by external disturbance. The upper bound of unknown nonlinear functions at each time is estimated by using a disturbance adaptation law. The estimated nonlinear functions are used to design a stabilizing function a control input. Tuning function is used to estimates unknown system parameter without overparametrization. A set-point regulation error converges to a residual set close to zero asymptotically. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is investigated by computer simulation.

  • This paper considers ramp tests for exponential lifetime distribution when there are limitations on test stress and test time. The inverse power law and a cumulative exposure model are assumed. Maximum likelihood (ML) estimators of model parameters and their asymptotic covariance matrix are obtained. The optimum ramp test plans are also found which minimize the asymptotic variance of the ML estimator of the log mean life at design constant stress. For selected values of the design parameters, tables useful for finding optimal test plans are given. The effect of the pre-estimates of design parameters is studied.
