  • The attitude stability of a satellite in spin-stabilized injection mode which contains a liquid pool is investigated. The satellite model for investigation is a two-body system consisting of a the main body, which is symmetric and rigid, representing the spacecraft, and a spherical pendulum, representing the liquid pool. Assuming that both spacecraft and pendulum are in states of steady spin about the symmetry axis of the spacecraft, the coupled nonlinear equations of motion for the system are simplified. In this paper, by using the multiple scales method, the possible resonance conditions in terms of the system parameters are determined and the corresponding near-resonant solutions are derived.

  • Purpose: The descriptive study was designed to examine the relationship of eating attitudes to the internalization of sociocultural attitudes, body shape satisfaction, anger and anger expression in college women. Method: 247 women were recruited from one college located in Seoul, Korea. The instruments used were the Internalization subscale of SATAQ-3R, BSQ for body shape satisfaction, Spielberger's state trait anger expression inventory-Korean version for anger and anger expression, and the Eating Attitude Test(EAT-26) for eating attitudes. Results: The score of EAT significantly correlated with internalization, state anger, body shape satisfaction, and anger expression except trait anger. The significant predictors of eating attitudes in college women were body shape satisfaction and anger expression, explaining 55% of the variance in eating attitudes. Conclusion: This study showed that body shape satisfaction is an important predictor for an eating disorder. Therefore, various programs for cognitive changes correcting the understanding about body and weight need to be developed in the future.

  • Older people have increased interest and involvement in controlling their aging body through physical exercise and dieting. This study examined the relationship between body image and the participation of older people in exercise and dieting. Two measures of body image (appearance attitude and appearance orientation) were used to study their relationships to participation in exercise and dieting among older people. Data were collected via a mail survey of older married couples residing in three U.S. metropolitan areas of Florida. A total of 94 couples who were 60 years older participated in this study. Multiple regression was run separately for men and women. The results indicated that for both men and women, appearance attitude was inversely related to dieting and positively related with exercise (even though the relationship with exercise was weak for men). Appearance orientation was not significantly related to exercise or dieting for both men and women. A new scale development on body image for an aging population was suggested. Various activities performed by aging people to manage their aging body and appearance need to be studied as related to physical and psychological well-being that includes body image.

  • We present 3-axis stabilized spacecraft attitude determination algorithm using the magnetometer. The magnetometer has been used as a reliable, light-weight and inexpensive sensor in attitude determination and reaction wheel momentum dumping system. Recent studies have attempted to use the magnetometer when other attitude sensor, such as star tracker, fails. The differences between the measured and computed the Earth's magnetic field components are spacecraft attitude errors. In this paper, we propose extended Kalman filter(EKF) to determine spacecraft attitude with the magnetometer data and gyro-measured body rates. We develop and simulate this algorithm using MATLAB/SIMULINK. This algorithm can be used as a backup attitude determination system.

  • Diet is an important focus in solidifying the fundamentals of health; thus, it is necessary to offer and manage accurate and correct information. This study examined the effects of body part satisfaction and attitude on diet, in female college students, who are known to be very interested in their appearances and tend to have a strong propensity to consume. The data were gathered using questionnaires answered by 101 female college students living in Daegu City, after classifying the women into normal weight and overweight groups, respectively. According to the analyzed results, there were no significant differences in satisfaction by body part between the normal weight and overweight groups, however, both groups were found to be dissatisfied with the following body parts, in the order of: thighs > legs > and hips. The motivation factors for weight control were found to be in order: not having a boyfriend > lacking of confidence > seeing slender entertainment stars, and there were no significant differences between the two groups. Finally, the main reasons for weight control were in order: appearance > health > getting a job. It is anticipated that these results will contribute to preparing systematic solutions to promote healthy diets and body satisfaction in society, and will help bring a desirable change in perceptions about diet.

  • This study aimed to find out the relationship between the body shape and the degree of obesity and the eating attitude influenced by the eating disorder among male and female college students. Followings are the summary of the results obtained in this study : 1. Male students perceived their own body shape properly, however female students perceived their body shape fatter than their real one even if almost all of them were maintaining normal weight. 2. For both male and female students the EAT-26 score was high when they perceived themselves fat, and in the group of students perceiving themselves fat the F I score was high and the F III score was low. Contray to this, in the group of students perceiving themselves thin the F nt score was high. The EAT-26 of female students marked higher than that of males in total questionares. 3. The EAT-26 score was high for both male and female students whose degree of obesity was high. The higher the degree of obesity the higher the F I score, and the lower the degree of obesity the higher the F III score. 4. For both male and female students the dieting frequency was high when they were in the group perceiving themselves fat and in the group with the high degree of obesity. And the number of females' is higher than that of males'. For male students there was no significant difference of dieting frequency in accordance with the perceived body shape and the degree of obesity. However, for female students the frequency was high when they were in the group perceiving themselves fat and in the group with the high degree of obesity. The frequency was high when they were in the group perceiving themselves thin and in the group with the low degree of obesity. 5. For the matter of relationship between the degree of obesity and the frequency of buying meals there was significant difference only in the female students and the frequency of buying meals was higher when the degree of obesity was higher.

  • Purpose: The increase of cosmetic surgery procedures is partly motivated by more positive attitude toward cosmetic surgery as a means of improving physical appearance. In this study factors expected to predict need for cosmetic surgery were examined. Methods: A descriptive design was used with 321 high school girls who completed a questionnaire about sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, body image, self-esteem, and need for cosmetic surgery. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to examine factors affecting need for cosmetic surgery. Results: Bivariate correlations showed that need for cosmetic surgery was positively correlated with internalization and awareness of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, and appearance orientation in body image and negatively correlated with self-esteem and ideal body mass index (BMI). Multiple regression showed that the predictive variables explained 22.1% in need for cosmetic surgery. The significant factors influencing need for cosmetic surgery were greater internalization and awareness of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, better appearance evaluation and higher appearance orientation in body image, lower self-esteem, and lower ideal BMI. Conclusion: Overall, results of this research suggest that prevention of media influence and body image disturbances, and promotion of self-esteem are very important to young women.
