PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate moisture susceptibility of a dense graded and an open graded asphalt mixtures by the method of AASHTO T-283. METHODS : To simulate moisture damage of asphalt pavements with continuously rainfall during summer rainy season, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were immersed in water for 15 days and were measured the weight and the change of strength. Also, the mixtures were performed five freeze-thaw cycles to simulate moisture damage of the mixtures by freeze-thaw during winter and were measured the change of strength. The degradation characteristics model was used to analyze the relationship between strength and moisture damage. RESULTS : According to the results, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were shown in the similar trends of the strength changes by immersion time and freeze-thaw cycle. However, the moisture damage reduction of open graded asphalt mixture was more sensitive in early phase than that of dense graded asphalt mixture.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the dielectric characteristics of asphalt mixtures and the air voids present in them using ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing. METHODS : To measure the dielectric properties of the asphalt mixtures, the reflection coefficient method and the approach based on the actual thickness of the asphalt layer were used. An air-couple-type GPR antenna with a center frequency of 1 GHz was used to measure the time for reflection from the asphalt/base layer interface. A piece of aluminum foil was placed at the interface to be able to determine the reflection time of the GPR signal with accuracy. An asphalt pavement testbed was constructed, and asphalt mixtures with different compaction numbers were tested. After the GPR tests, the asphalt samples were cored and their thicknesses and number of air voids were measured in the laboratory. RESULTS : It was found the dielectric constant of asphalt mixtures tends to decrease with an increase in the number of air voids. The dielectric constant values estimated from the reflection coefficient method exhibited a slight correlation to the number of air voids. However, the dielectric constant values measured using the approach based on the actual asphalt layer thickness were closely related to the asphalt mixture density. Based on these results, a regression equation to determine the number of air voids in asphalt mixtures using the GPR test method was proposed. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the number of air voids in an asphalt mixture can be calculated based on the dielectric constant of the mixture as determined by GPR testing. It was also found that the number of air voids was exponentially related to the dielectric constant, with the coefficient of determination, $R^2$, being 0.74. These results suggest that the dielectric constant as determined by GPR testing can be used to improve the construction quality and maintenance of asphalt pavements.

A procedure to determine the axle load limits of asphalt concrete pavements are proposed in this study. Axle load limits are determined by calculating maximum tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt stabilized base layer and maximum vertical strains at the top of the subgrade. In order to investigate the efficiency of axle configuration, calculated influence line of wheel load on domestic expressway pavement system is used. Limiting strains are selected through the analysis of conventional failure criteria. From the analysis of axle load limits about axle composition(single-axle, tandem-axle, tridem-axle), it is found that the axle load limits of tandem-axle and tridem-axle can be calculated by muitipling the axle load limits of single-axle by axle numbers and that axle load limits are closely related to the thickness of each layer of pavement structure. It is also found that the axle load limits by tensile strains are more critical than those by vertical strains on asphalt concrete pavement models of YOUNG-DONG, KYONG-IN and KYONG-BU expressways.

This paper mainly deals with the performance evaluation of 33 asphalt sections of Korea Expressway Corporation Test Road (KECTR) during the past four years. Since the construction of the KECTR in December 2002, key performance indicators of asphalt pavements have been collected five times with an Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), and have been analyzed for permanent deformation, surface distress, and road roughness. Linear viscoelastic characteristics of four dense graded HMAs used in KECTR were investigated with a series of complex modulus test. The effect of air void in HMAs on dynamic modulus was investigate at two air void contents for a surface course HMA (19 mm Nominal Maximum Size of Aggregate). Layer densification due to traffic was estimated from air void contents of field cored samples, and was correlated with pavement distresses and performances. One of findings of this study was that both permanent deformation and cracking were suspectible to pavement temperatures, rather than traffic. However, it was found that road roughness was mostly affected by traffic loading.

Existing basic mechanical models which are methods characterizing viscoelastic materials were first reviewed to account for viscoelastic behavior of the asphalt pavement structure in this paper. A viscoelastic mechanical model considering a single load of vehicles subsequently was suggested and an equation that indicates the time-dependant behavior of asphalt pavements was derived from the proposed model. Non-destructive tests using falling weight deflectometer(FWD) were performed for a test section to estimate the application of the model. Both deflections and strains procured by the equation were compared to testing results according to loading history. By observing field measurements and theoretical evaluations, if two results are compared by the features of deflection according to time history, it could be concluded that the proposed model is expected to be suitable for prediction of the behavior of asphalt pavements because there is hardly difference between field data and calculated data.

This study was carried out to provide the information on seasonal variations of water content under highway asphalt pavements which influence on the dynamic behaviour and durability of pavements, and to assess the correlation between water content and soil or meteorological factors. Total eight sites for water content measurement which included fives sites in Kyungbu, two sites in Honam, and one site in Youngdong Highway were selected considering the variations in geology, topology and meteorology factors over all the country. Water contents under asphalt pavements were measured up to 170 cm depth every two week for total 13 months of August 1992 through September 1993 using neutron moisture meter(CPN-503DR). The range of water content ($\theta$$_{w}$) at the upper soils of above 50 cm depth was 7~12% and was not quite different regardless of sites, except for Iseo site. However, soil water contents below 60 or 70 cm depth were significantly different between the measurement sites, that is, the lowest water content was 5% at Kyungsan site and the highest water content was 20% at Iseo site. For all the sites, seasonal variations in water content during the experimental period were little, their range was within only 1 to 4%. Seasonal variations of water content in original or cutting area, which were 4% more or less, were slightly larger than in bedding areas, which were below 2%. Water contents under asphalt pavements had statistically significant positive correlations with silt and clay content in soil, but there were little correlations between water content and meteorological factors such as precipitation, relative humidity, mean air temperature, and wind velocity.
Safety, resilience and comfort of pedestrian were assessed by the British Pendulum Test and SB/GB factor test at 8 kinds of sidewalk pavement. Sidewalk paving materials were normal concrete, porous concrete, concrete block, soil concrete, asphalt, rubber chip/resin mixture, wood chip/resin mixture and floor tile. In addition, a survey was conducted to investigate the perception of pedestrians on the sidewalk paving material. As a result, while the skid resistance value was measured in the most 60BPN above, the floor tile showed a low value of about 30BPN. The ratios of SB factor to GB factor of the elastic pavements(rubber/resin mixture and wood chip/resin mixture) appeared to be relatively large when compared with those of the conventional sidewalks. The survey showed that respondents perceived as more safe and comfortable elastic pavements compared to conventional pavements. Approximately 50% of respondents answered that hardened soil pavement was the most environmentally friendly.

To analyze the effect of temperature on pavement types of dedicated lane, we have performed a temperature monitoring for pavements which were constructed in test track for Bimodal Tram. These pavements classified into four types; natural and artificial lawn, concrete and asphalt. Dedicated lane composed of natural and artificial lawn has a complex structure with concrete slab in contact surface of tires, and with 1m natural or artificial lawn in the middle part of lane. From monitoring results for pavements, dedicated lane with natural lawn shows lower temperature value compared with other dedicated lanes, and it is expected to decrease the heat island effect of conventional road if constructed.
PURPOSES : This study is to construct the regression models of drainage asphalt concrete specimens and to provide the appropriate coefficients of hydraulic conductivity prediction models. METHODS: In terms of easy calculation of the hydraulic conductivity from porosity of asphalt concrete pavement, the estimation model of hydraulic conductivity was proposed using regression analysis. 10 specimens of drainage asphalt concrete pavement were made for measurement of the hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity model proposed in this study was calculated by empirical model based on porosity and the grain size. In this study, it shows the compared results from permeability measured test and empirical equation, and the suitability of proposed model, using regression analysis. RESULTS: As the result of the regression analysis, the hydraulic conductivity calculated from the proposal model was similar to that resulted from permeability measured test. Also result of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) analysis, a proposed regression model is resulted in more accurate model. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed model can be used in case of estimating the hydraulic conductivity at drainage asphalt concrete pavements in fields.
This paper presents a simple and efficient two-dimensional rigid-body-spring network model able to accurately estimate the fractural behavior of civil fiber reinforced pavements. The proposed rigid-body-spring network model, denoted as RBSN model, considers civil fiber reinforcing materials using the beam elements and link spring elements. The RBSN method is able to model collapse due to asphalt crushing and civil fiber slip. The RBSN model is used to predict the applied load-midspan deflection response of civil fiber retrofitted asphalt specimen subjected to the three-point bending. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements are compared to based on tests available in the literature. The numerically simulated responses agree significantly with the corresponding experimental results until the maximum load. However, It should be mentioned that, in order to more accurately predict the postpeak flexural behavior of the civil fiber retrofitted asphalt pavement, development of the advanced model to simulate the slip relationship between civil fiber and asphalt is required.
