  • This paper discusses the effectiveness of onboard measurements and data extracted from weather information for speed-power analysis. Furthermore, validation results of hull and propeller cleaning and painting during dry-docking are discussed. Wind and wave information can be obtained from onboard measurements or weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The weather information of a specified position and time is extracted from NOAA weather data and compared with onboard measurements. In addition, to validate the effects of hull cleaning and painting during dry-docking, speed-power analysis results of before and after dry-docking are compared. The results show that both onboard measurements and weather information show acceptable reliability when added resistance and speed-power analysis results are compared with each other. Moreover, the ship performance analysis (SPA) software clearly shows the effects of hull cleaning and painting, and it can provide reliable analysis results with either onboard measurements or weather information. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the analysis method and SPA software used in this study are effective in analyzing the ship's speed-power performance.

  • Although lots of works are done in influence diagnostics, results in the multivariate analysis are quite rare. One of recent works done by Fung(1995) is about the single case influence diagnostics in the linear discriminant analysis. In this paper we extend Fung's results to the multiple cases diagnostics which are necessary in the linear discriminant analysis for two reasons among others; First, the masking effect cannot be detected by single case diagnostics and secondly two populations are concerned in the discriminant analysis, i.e., influential cases can occur in one or both populations.

  • The paper presents preliminary investigation results for the effect of the baseline correction in the acceleration excitation method on finite element seismic analysis results (such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain considering cyclic plasticity, von Mises effective stress, etc) of nuclear safety Class I components. For investigation, finite element elastic-plastic time-history seismic analysis is performed for a surge line including a pressurizer lower head, a pressurizer surge nozzle, a surge piping, and a hot leg surge nozzle using the Chaboche hardening model. Analysis is performed for various seismic loading methods such as acceleration excitation methods with and without the baseline correction, and a displacement excitation method. Comparing finite element analysis results, the effect of the baseline correction is investigated. As a result of the investigation, it is identified that finite element analysis results using the three methods do not show significant difference.

  • Performance of panelists trained for cooked rice quality was evaluated using analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis. Each method offered different information. Results showed that panleists with high F ratios (p=0.05) did not always have high correlation coefficient (p=0.05) with mean values pooled from whole panel. The results of analysis of variance for the panelists whose performance were extremely good or extremely poor were consistent with those of correlation analysis. Outliers designated by principal component analysis were different from the panelists whose performance was defined as extremely good or extremely poor by analysis of variance and correlation analysis. The results of principal component analysis descriminated the panelists with different scoring range more than different scoring trends depending on the treatments. Our study suggested combination of analysis of variance and correlation analysis provided valid basis for screening panelists.

  • Traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain, because of the shortage of natural rock. Geotextile tubes hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(shore protection structure, detached breakwater, groins and jetty). Recently, new preliminary design criteria supported by model and prototype tests, and some stability analysis calculations have been studied. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of geotextile tube with various properties of geotextile and hydraulic pumping conditions. Numerical analysis was executed to compare with the results from the large-scale field model tests, and also compared the results of 2-D plane strain analysis and 3-D FEM analysis. A geotextile tube was modeled using the commercial finite element analysis program ABAQUS and the one-quarter of tube was modeled. Behavior of geotextile tube during the hydraulic pumping procedure was analyzed by comparing the large-scale field model test and numerical analysis. The shape variation and maximum tube height between the numerical analysis results and large-scale filed test results are turned out to be a good agreement.

  • This study presents an analysis method for heat flow and deformation of sheet metal laser welding. A heat source model for 2-dimensional heat flow analysis of laser welding process was suggested in this paper. To investigate the availability of the heat source model, the analysis results were compared and estimated with the results of previous researches. We could get a good agreement between the results of numerical analysis and experiments in the temperature distribution of weldment. Due to the characteristics of welding process, some kinds of deformations are usually generated in a welded structure. Generally, the degree of deformation is dependent on the welding sequence constraints as well as input power Therefore, in this paper we evaluate the deformation of gas pressure vessel according to the welding sequence and input power. In the analysis of weld deformation, 2-dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis was performed for the gas pressure vessel by using a commercial FE program package.

  • A reactor vessel internals comprehensive vibration assessment program (RVI CVAP) of an advanced power reactor 1400 (APR1400) is being performed as a non-prototype category-2 type of reactor based on the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide (NRC RG) 1.20. The aim of this paper is to present the results of structural response analysis and measuring locations of a upper guide structure (UGS) assembly of the APR1400 reactor. The analysis results of the UGS assembly results show that meet the specified integrity levels of the design acceptance criteria. Also, the measuring locations are set by the analysis results of the UGS assembly and selection criteria of measuring locations prior to this study. These analysis results and measuring locations will be used as fundamental materials to design a measurement system for the APR1400 RVI CVAP.

  • This paper described the dynamic characteristics of 20-story apartment buildings from the results of full-scale measurements and analysis. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are quantified by measuring and analyzing ambient vibrations of the structure and compared with the results from dynamic analysis. Comparison with computed mode shapes and frequencies shows good agreement with the experimental results. It proved that it is important to estimate coupling beam and soil parameters through a comparison of the measured results with calculated results.

  • Structural analysis of automotive engine cover under vibration excitation is performed by finite element analysis (FEA) in order to identify the critical area of the structure. Assembly load due to the tightening of the bolts as well as the vibration excitation were considered to describe the actual loading condition. Natural frequencies of the system were extracted considering the damping effect of the structure. Dynamic analysis was performed based on the extracted natural frequency of the system. Experimental modal analysis (EMA) and measurement of strains were performed to verify the results of the analysis. Analysis results correlated closely with the experimental results. Analysis and experiments showed that contribution of the assembly load should not be ignored to predict the structural failure of the engine cover.

  • This paper describes a model of the subjective reliability analysis, which uses a fuzzy set, natural language expressions and parameterized operations of fuzzy sets, and reflects analysts' subjectivity. The model has the problem of many different analysis results being obtained since the results depend on their subjectivity. As one of the solutions two kinds of mutual agreements based on the analysis results are considered. One is the intersection and the union of the fuzzy sets obtained by the analysis. The other is the weighted average of the fuzzy sets. This paper gives these interpretations from the viewpoint of system reliability analysis. This paper also shows examples of these considerations.
