  • Objective: The main purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of parent-adolescent communication (through adolescent optimism) on adolescent conflict-coping styles. Methods: A total of 337 high school students participated in this study. They completed questionnaires about communications with their parents and their own optimism and conflict-coping styles. Data were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and SEM. Results: Neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on adolescent conflict-coping styles. However, mother-adolescent communication had an indirect effect on conflict-coping styles, mediated by adolescent optimism. Adolescents who had open communication with mothers displayed higher levels of optimism, which led to more positive conflict-coping styles. In addition, multigroup analyses revealed that there were significant gender differences in direct and indirect effects. For boys, mother-adolescent communication directly influenced adolescent conflict-coping styles; however, father-adolescent communication did not directly or indirectly affect adolescent conflict-coping styles. For girls, neither father- nor mother-adolescent communication had direct effects on conflict-coping styles; only optimism had a significant effect on conflict-coping styles. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that communication with mothers and fathers have different effects on adolescents' conflict-coping styles. These findings have implications for future research and practice by emphasizing the importance of parent-adolescent communication and optimism in designing conflict-coping programs for adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship between parent's supportive parenting and adolescent sexual values. The subjects were 137 adolescents who attended high school in Keoungbok. Statistical techniques were Factor Analysis, Crosstabs, Two-way ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Multiple Regression. The results of this were as follows. First, Adolescents who more perceived supportive parenting from a parent were more likely to consult with parents about one's own sexual problems. Second, There was significant difference in adolescent sexual values by parent's supportive parenting levels or gender. Adolescents who perceived more supportive parenting from parent, or who were boys were more likely to have positive sexual values. But there was no significant interaction effect of supportive parenting level and gender on adolescent sexual values. Finally, The Multiple Regression analysis showed that gender was the stronger predictor of adolescent sexual values than parent's supportive parenting.

Partitioned by gender, the personal characteristics, Sociodemographic variables, and parents' household work variables of each respondent was analyzed. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, adolescents demonstrated positive consciousness on the value, and participation in, of household work. However, participation rates in household work was lower than consciousness. Secondly, male adolescent participation in household work varied according to communication satisfaction with family, father's participation in household work, father's consciousness on equality of both sexes, amount of household work delegated, and amount of household work delegated to each sex. However, female adolescent participation in household work varied according to mothers' employment status, father's participation in household work, amount of household work delegated, and amount of household work delegated to each sex. Finally, father's participation in household work directly, and indirectly, affected male adolescent participation. However, in female adolescents, parents' compliment was the most meaningful variable directly and indirectly related to participation in household work.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the life satisfaction of adolescents in the ecological contexts of their individual, family, school, and social-cultural experiences. The participants were 1,099 middle and high school students in Chungnam-do. Instruments were the Satisfaction with Life Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory, the School Life Satisfaction Scale, and Social-Cultural Satisfaction Scale. Data analysis involved the use of descriptive statistics, t- and F-tests, Duncan's multiple range test, product-moment correlations, multiple regression, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, and factor analysis. Results were as follows: Firstly, middle school students showed the highest levels of life satisfaction, and vocational high school students reported the lowest levels. Also, life satisfaction was inversely related to school grades. Secondly, for all the students, life satisfaction was positive correlated with self-esteem, open communication with parents, school life satisfaction, and social-cultural satisfaction. Lastly, open communication with parents and overall satisfaction with life at school explained more of the variance in adolescent life satisfaction than any other factors.

  • Objectives: The aim of the current study is to test for the association of DRD4 exon III VNTR polymorphism with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) in Korean children population. Methods: 113 Korean children with ADHD, 102 parents, and 133 control subjects participated with the current study. The distribution of genotypes and alleles of DRD4 exon III VNTR in children with ADHD was compared with that in control subjects. In addition, 69 children with ADHD and their parents were analyzed using the transmission disequilibrium test(TDT). Results: We could not find any significant differences in the distribution of genotypes and alleles at DRD4 exon III VNTR polymorphism between children with ADHD and control subjects. In addition, there was no preferential transmission of long allele of DRD4 exon III VNTR polymorphism. Conclusion: These results suggest that DRD4 is not associated with ADHD in Korean children population.
