  • If the data are pre-whitened, then gradient adaptive algorithms which are simpler than higher order statistics algorithms can be used in adaptive blind signal estimation. In this paper, we propose a blind subband affine projection algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output adaptive equalization in the blind environments. All of the adaptive filters in subband affine projection equalization are decomposed to polyphase components, and the coefficients of the decomposed adaptive sub-filters are updated by defining the multiple cost functions. An infinite impulse response filter bank is designed for the data pre-whitening. Pre-whitening procedure through subband filtering can speed up the convergence rate of the algorithm without additional computation. Simulation results are presented showing the proposed algorithm's convergence rate, blind equalization and blind signal separation performances.

  • The adaptive IIR filters for active noise control systems are more effective when acoustic feedback exists, but the adaptive IIR filters could be unstable when the filter algorithm is not yet converged. In this paper, auto-secondary path estimation techniques and a stabilizing process for adaptive Multi-Channel Recursive LMS (MCRLMS) filters are developed to improve the stability of multi-channel active noise control systems. Experiments using a TMS320VC33 digital signal processor in a three dimensional enclosure have performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Recently, some variable length adaptive filters which employ variable lengths taps for the input signal statistics are proposed [1-5]. In this paper, a new subband adaptive filter with variable filter tap length is proposed. The proposed subband variable length adaptive filters can optimize filter length for each subband which can result less computational complexities with respect to the conventional full band adaptive filters. When the signal in the full band has narrow spectrum, the conventional full band adaptive requires very long filter taps, whereas the proposed subband variable filter requires less taps with the spectrum split in subband. The computer simulation results reveals that in many case, in system identification with narrow band system estimation, the proposed adaptive filter has less computational complexities with faster convergence.

  • This paper describes recently developed techniques for effective filtering of neutron detector signal noise. In this paper, three kinds of noise filters are proposed and their performance is demonstrated for the estimation of reactivity. The tested filters are based on the unilateral kernel filter, unilateral kernel filter with adaptive bandwidth and bilateral filter to show their effectiveness in edge preservation. Filtering performance is compared with conventional low-pass and wavelet filters. The bilateral filter shows a remarkable improvement compared with unilateral kernel and wavelet filters. The effectiveness and simplicity of the unilateral kernel filter with adaptive bandwidth is also demonstrated by applying it to the reactivity measurement performed during reactor start-up physics tests.

  • Recently, many research activities in the image processing area are concentrated on developing new algorithms by finding the solution of the 'diffusion equation'. The diffusion algorithms are expected to be utilized in numerous applications including noise removal and image restoration, edge detection, segmentation, etc. In this paper, at first, it will be shown that the anisotropic diffusion algorithms have the similar structure with the adaptive FIR filters with cross-shaped 5-tap kernel, and this relatively small-sized kernel causes many iterating procedure for satisfactory filtering effects. Moreover, it will also be shown that lots of modifications which are adopted to the conventional Gaussian diffusion method in order to weaken the edge blurring nature of the linear filtering process increases another computational burden. We propose a new Median diffusion scheme by replacing the adaptive linear filters in the diffusion process with the AWM (Adaptive Weighted Median) filters. A diffusion-equation-based adaptation scheme is also proposed. With the proposed scheme, the size of the diffusion kernel can be increased, and thus diffusion speed greatly increases. Simulation results shows that the proposed Median diffusion scheme outperforms in noise removal (especially impulsive noise), and edge preservation.

  • Digital images are easily corrupted by noise during the data transmission, data capture and data processing. A technical method of noise analyzing and adaptive filtering for reducing of quantum noise in medical radio-fluoroscopy images is presented. By adjusting the characteristics of the filter according to local statistics around each pixel of the image as moving windowing, it is possible to suppress noise sufficiently while preserve edge and other significant information required in diagnosis. We proposed adaptive weighed median(AWM) filters based on local statistics. We showed two ways of realizing the AWM filters. One is a simple type of AWM filter, which is constructed by Homogeneous factor(HF). Homogeneous factor(HF) from the noise models that enables the filter to recognize the local structures of the image is introduced, and an algorithm for determining the HF fitted to the diagnostic systems with various inner statistical properties is proposed. We show by the experimented that the performances of proposed method is superior to these of other filters and models in preserving small details and suppressing the noise at homogeneous region. The proposed algorithms were implemented by Visual C++ language on a IBM-PC Pentium 550 for testing purposes and the effects and results of the filter in the various levels of noise and images were proposed by comparing the values of NMSE(normalized mean square error) with the value of the other existing filtering methods.

  • It is proposed to use a pair of frequency-domain adaptive digital filters to estimate the magnitude squared coherence (MSC) functions of two signals. Such a method requires less computations than the LMS-MSC algorithm in which the least mean square (LMS) algorithm is applied in the time domain to compute the coefficients of a pair of adaptive digital filters. The frequency-domain adaptive digital filtering algorithms considered in this paper include the constrained frequency domain LMS (CFLMS) and the unconstrained frequency domain LMS (UFLMS) algorithms. The performance of the proposed methods are compared with those of the LMS-MSC algorithm.

  • We propose a novel noise littering method based on adaptive windowing. To restore a noisy signal adaptive filtering methods have been widely researched and used. However, conventional adaptive filtering methods have a trade-off between noise suppression and edge preservation since they adopt fixed size filters. In this paper applying the adaptive windowing concept to adaptive filtering, we overcome the trade-off, The filter size is adaptively selected depending on signal statistics. The visual results of the signal and image restorations convincingly show the superior preservation of edge and detail and suppression of noise for the proposed adaptive windowed adaptive filter compared with conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new technique which employ the pipelined architecture for the implementation of the SAP adaptive filter using variable step size. According as SAP adaptive filter is sufficiently decomposed, a simplified SAP adaptive filter can be derived, and the weights of adaptive sub-filters can be updated by a simple formular without a matrix inversion. The convergence speed and the steady state error of the simplified SAP adaptive filter are improved by using variable step size. For practical implementation, the simplified SAP adaptive sub-filters are transformed by the pipeline technique.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm for adaptive IIR filters based on equation error methods using the RLS algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the concept of feedback of the scaled output error proposed by tin and Unbehauen is employed and the forgetting factor is varied in adaptation process for avoiding the accumulation of the estimation error for additive noise . The proposed algorithm has the good convergence property without the parameter estimation error under the existence of mea-surement noise.
