  • Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers are being used increasingly because of their adaptability to control algorithms and reliability of passive systems. In this paper, an extensive investigation on performance of MR dampers in semi-active and passive modes has been carried out. It is observed that the overall energy dissipation by MR dampers in passive-on modes is higher than that in semi-active modes for most of the competitive semi-active controllers. Based on the energy dissipation pattern, a novel semi-active controller, termed as "Simple Passive Semi-Active Controller", has been proposed for MR dampers. This controller can be emulated by a simple passive hardware proposed in this paper. The proposed concept of controller "hardware emulation" is innovative and can also be implemented for other semi-active devices for control algorithms of certain form. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed controller has been investigated extensively through numerical simulations. It has been demonstrated that the proposed controller is competitive to or more effective than other widely used / investigated semi-active controllers.

  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of building structure by means of the active tuned mass damper and the modified positive position feedback controller. To this end, one-degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper system equipped with ATMD is considered. The stability condition for the addressed system when applying the proposed PPF controller is derived by Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion. The stability condition shows that the modified PPF controller is absolutely stable if the controller gain is positive, so that the modified PPF controller can be used without difficulty. Theoretical study shows that the modified PPF controller can effectively suppress vibrations as the original PPF controller does in smart structure applications. To investigate the validity of the modified PPF controller, a simple experimental structure with an ATMD system driven by DC motor was built. The modified PPF control algorithm was implemented on Atmel 128 microcontroller. The experimental result shows that the modified PPF controller can also suppress vibrations for the real structure.

  • This research is concerned with the active vibration controller design for smart structures by a modified LQG controller. The smart structure is defined as the structure equipped with smart actuators and sensors. Various analog and digital control, techniques aimed for the piezoceramic sensors and actuators have been proposed for the active vibration control of smart structures. In this paper, the modified LQG controller is developed for the active vibration suppression of smart structures to implement the predefined decay rate on modal displacements. The proposed modified LQG controller proved its effectiveness by experiments.

  • In this paper, the new robust active noise controller was proposed to be applied for attenuating the noises when the nonlinear distortion in the secondary path exists. Through computer simulations as well as the analytical analysis, it could be shown that it is possible for both conventional LMS controller and proposed controller, to be applied for actively controlling the noises and linearizing the nonlinear distortion in the secondary path. Also, the simulations results demonstrated that the proposed controller may have faster convergence speed and better capability of controlling the noises and compensating the nonlinear distortion than the conventional LMS controller.

  • We have surrounded undesired living noises in our life. One of biggest noises coming out of range hood during cooking in the kitchen. A range hood is one of the most important appliances in the kitchen because it ventilates polluted air out during cooking, and maintains air quality in the kitchen. But current kitchen range hoods bring up some issues; First, the range hoods consume massive amount of standby power not in use condition. Second, current models have designed manual fan operating system with sudden onset of noise with starting. In this paper, we propose an auto control system entire processes from air ventilation to noise reduction. Our system is consist of three parts (Eco-sensors pack, Main Controller and Active Noise Controller); Eco-sensors pack detects air pollution of kitchen areas and sends the detection values to Main Controller. Main Controller determines operation of range hood by detected values. Active Noise Controller is located inside of the range hood. It received starting signals from Main Controller which elicits degrees of polluted air condition and fan operating speed from 1 to 3. Once Active Noise Controller detected the signals, it runs a ventilating fan until new value from Main Controller becomes 0. while the range hood works, A noise cancellation algorithm inside of Active Noise Controller become activated to reduce levels of noise. As a result, the proposed system clearly shows reduction in power consumption include standby power and decreases in levels of noise.

  • This paper describes a single-phase active power filter based on a newly developed digital controller. The developed controller utilizes FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm to extract the reference signal from the load current, considering the phase-angle delay of each order of harmonics. Optimized technique was applied for whole control algorithm to implement the real-time operation of developed controller. The performance of developed controller for a single-phase active power filter was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC. The feasibility of hardware implementation was confirmed by building and testing a prototype. The developed digital controller for a single-phase active power filter can compensate the harmonic current generated by the power supply for digital equipment.

  • In recent years, the demand for the distribution of energy resource has been increasing. However, the output power is limited by the stability of the distribution network. This study proposes an active distribution network that can reconfigure the distribution line using an active phase controller. The conventional distribution network has a fixed structure, whereas the proposed active distribution network has a variable structure. Therefore, the active distribution network can increase the output power of the distribution energy resource and reduce the overload of distribution line facilities. The active phase controller has two operation modes to minimize the circulating current during dynamic reconfiguration. In this study, the voltage and current control algorithms are proposed for the active phase controller. The proposed method for the active phase controller is simulated via PSIM simulation.

  • Active noise control technique has superior performance in low frequency ranges(50 .approx. 400Hz) to the conventional passive noise control technique. For the feasibility of active noise control, it is required to develop a controller which can implement control algorithm on real-time. In this study, therefore, real-time controller is developed using TMS320c25, high speed digital processor. Unlike conventional DSP board of complete ADD ON type, it is possible for the developed controller to interface with the other computer system easily by series communication for the convenience of program development. Furthermore it is designes to be separated readily as a control device. Active noise control of duct system is implemented ti evaluate a performance of developed device. Active noise control of duct system is implemented to evaluate a performance of developed controller using filtered-x LMS algorithm.
