  • A numerical method is developed for the solution of fully developed turbulent recirculating flow whose cross-sectional area varies periodically. This enalbes the flow field analysis to be confined to a single isolated module, without involvement with the entrance region problem. This method are applied to the analysis of the turbulent flow field and heat transfer in artificially roughened annulus with repeated square rib.

  • In this paper we have investigated the guiding properties of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square-lattice of air-holes in the cladding. We have shown numerical results of PCFs with various air hole sizes and hole-to-hole spacings over a wide wavelength range. The group velocity dispersion, effective area and effective refractive index of PCF have been calculated numerically. The waveguide dispersion has greatly affected the group velocity dispersion when hole-to-hole spacing is about $1{\mu}m$. The effective area is quite flat over the wide spectral range whether the hole-to-hole spacing is large or ratio of diameter to pitch is large. From the field distribution, we found that the field is tightly confined within the core region of PCF when the pitch is $3{\mu}m$ and the air-filling fraction is 0.9.

  • The estimation of seawater intrusion into deep aquifers has been becoming an important subject in terms of site characterization for geological disposal of radioactive waste. Conventional direct-current resistivity methods have been used for ground water explorations and recently have been applied to environmental problems. However, electromagnetic methods are more practical and useful for such a deep investigation. We consider audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) and surface-to-borehole electromagnetic (EM) tomography methods as promising tools for the investigation of deep aquifer. These methods were tested in the Hasunuma area, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Although the study area is in an urban area, high-quality AMT data were acquired, which was mainly accomplished by night-time data recording and remote-reference data processing. One-dimensional inversion results of the AMT data revealed two extremely conductive zones, which is consistent with the electrical conductivity profile of pore water in core samples. It can be interpreted as the seawater intrusions into both zones. However, the chemical analysis of the groundwater sampled in the deep zone suggests that this groundwater must be fossil seawater that had been confined during sedimentation processes. In addition, the permeability coefficient of the deep layer is very low. Thus the deep conductive zone corresponds to the fossil seawater regarded as being difficult to flow.

  • Cold plasma and heat treatment were selected as technologies to reduce unburned carbon in fly ash to less than 1.0%. Both cold plasma and heat treatment made it possible to eliminate unburned carbon to less than 1.0%. In the case of fly ash, which almost entirely eliminated unburned carbon with an ignition loss of 0.5%, heat treatment caused adhesion among particles and the BET specific surface area rapidly decreased as the mean particle size increased. On the other hand, with cold plasma, unburned carbon elimination caused the BET specific surface area to decrease and, as no adhesion occurred among particles, the mean particle size became small. Also, cold plasma treatment allowed small spherical particles confined within the unburned carbon particles to be released with the elimination of the unburned carbon frame, so that the quantity of fine particles had a tendency to slightly increase.

  • Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. Bond failure of reinforcing bar generally take place by splitting of the concrete cover as bond force between concrete and reinforcing bars exceeds the confinement of the concrete cover and reinforcement. However, the confinement force has a limitation. Thus, the only variable is the bearing angle corresponding to the change of bond force. Higher rib height bars possessing higher shearing resistance can maintain higher bearing angle and higher splitting resistance when bars are highly confined, and consequently higher bond strength, than lower rib higher bars. In this study, from the evaluate bond strength of high Relative Rib Area Bars Using beam-end test specimens are compared with the current provisions for development of reinforcement, and the improved design method of bond strength is proposed.

  • Vertical growth of iridium-catalyzed carbon nanofibers could be selectively grown on the MgO substrate using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. Growth positions of the iridium-catalyzed carbon nanofibers on the MgO substrate could be manipulated according to the applied bias voltage. At-150 V, the carbon nanofibers growth was confined only at the corner area of the substrate. Based on these results, we discussed the cause for the confinement of the vertically grown carbon nanofibers on the specific area of the MgO substrate as a function of the applied bias voltage.

  • The prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are one of the most widely used techniques to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits and dredged soil. Discharge capacity is one of the factors affecting the behavior of PVDs. In the field, a PVD is confined by clay or dredged soil, which is normally remolded during PVD installation. Under field conditions, soil particles may enter the PVD drainage channels, and the consolidation settlement of the improved subsoil may cause 131ding of the PVD. These factors will affect the discharge capacity of the PVDs. In this study an experimental study was carried out to estimate the discharge capacity of three different types of PVDs by utilizing the large-scale laboratory model testing and small-scale laboratory model testing equipments. The several factors such as confinement condition (confined by soft marine clay or dredged soil) and variations of the discharge capacity were studied with time under soil specimen confinement, The test results indicated that discharge capacity decreases with increasing load, time, and hydraulic gradient. With load application, the cross-sectional area of the drainage channel of PVD decreases because the filter of PVD is pressed into the core. The discharge capacity of the soft marine clay-confined PVDs is much lower than that of the dredged soil-confined PVDs.

  • In oriental medicine, Sukjihwang (SJH, Rehmanniae radix preparat) has been used as one of the key ingredients for the prescription of several herbal decoctions and applied clinically for the treatment of several diseases including nervous system and cardiovascular disease. Here, possible growth-promoting effects of SJH on injured spinal cord axons were investigated in the rats. SJH administration increased levels of active form of ERK1/2 protein and Cdc2 proteins in the injured spinal cord tissue. Anterograde DiI-tracing of corticospinal tract axons showed that SJH-treatment enhanced axonal arborization in the injury area and extensive axonal extension into the caudal area. In SJH-treated group, glial scar formed after spinal cord injury was confined in a smaller area compared to the control group, and the trabecula structure was well observed within the injury cavity. Furthermore, increased proliferation and migration of astrocytes in the injury cavity were observed by SJH treatment. Thus, these present data provide a biological evidence on potential importance of SJH therapy for the treatment of injured spinal cord.

  • The metamorphosed belt on cherty and andesitic rocks of the Gyeongnam province area has been well known as the most important copper matallogenetic province in Korea and locally has been investigated by several geologists. This report is summarized about geology, occurrence of ore deposits, the study of the present status of mine developments and exploitations and the suggestions of future proposed of copper mine developments and harmoniously and reseonably planning of demands and supply of copper ore. For convenience of study the writer divided the survey region as 4 areas, according to the conditions of mine location. They are (1) Goseong copper area (2) Gunbuk-Haman copper area (3) Masan-Changwon copper area (4) Tongrae-Ilgwang copper area. The geology of the above 4 areas consits of Cretaceous Gyongsang System, which is divided into Silla series, Nakdong Series and Bulguksa Series. The former has intrusive and extrusive andesite and sedimentary formation, and the latter has dioritic and hornblende granite. Ore deposits which is mostly vein types are confined mostly in the andesite and cherty rocks of Silla and Nakdong Series. It is observed slight hydrothermal alteration, i. e. propylitization, chloritization, saussuritization and silicification. It seems that the ore was formed by hydrothermal solution and secondary enrichement. The ore minerals are mainly chalcopyrite and pyrite, with small amounts of malachite, azurite, chalcocite, cuprite, galena, and sphalerite, magnetite, tetrahedrite and etc.. The efficient plan of copper mine developments in surveyed region are as following; (a) Gyeongnam Copper districts are divided in 4 area as mentioned above. (b) Each area would be likely developed as group-working as one unit. For the sufficiently supplying a demand of electric copper, the importations of high grade copper ore in foreign country are invitable at present status of copper mine developments and exploitations.
