This study identified and explained the prototypes of teacher's belief about children's play with the use of Stephenson's Q-methodology. The sample consisted of 35 kindergarten teachers. A Q-deck composed of 48 cards, derived in part from a review of related literature and was developed by the researchers and sorted by the subjects. The obtained Q-sort scores were analyzed by factor analysis. The findings revealed that the subjects were divided into 3 belief types : "life-experienced", "developmental-disciplinary", "cultural-environmental". Likely explanations for these results are considered, and implications are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate low- and middle-income preschoolers' pretend negotiation. Pretend negotiation of 78 five-year-old children were analyzed by children's sex and their socioeconomic status. Dyads were participated in social pretend play session during 20 minutes. The play session was videotaped and the videotaped data were transcribed. Each transcript was analysed according to the modified version of Howe et al. (1998)'s coding schemes. Results showed that children from middle-income families were higher in directive and responsive pretend negotiation than children from low-income families. And girls from middle-income families were higher in pretend negotiation (play role) than girls from low-income families.
This study's aim was to analyze the effect of a project activity based on role play on 5-year-olds' mathematical ability. The participants of this study were 56 5-year-olds from two educational institutions for young children located in two metropolitan cities in Korea. The experimental group (n=28) participated in a project activity based on role play, while the comparative group (n=28) did not. The "Mart Play" project activity based on role play was developed emergently by the children and teachers of the experimental group. The children's mathematical ability was measured before and after the experiment. The data were analyzed using t-test and ANCOVA. As a result, the project activity based on role play had an effect on the improvement of 5-year-olds' mathematical ability generally, but not on their measurement ability.
The purpose of this study was to explore the process of scientific thinking as it is revealed through the cases of constructive play for young children. For this purpose, the researcher observed and interviewed six four-year-olds in the Jaemi Class while recording them with a camcorder during a free choice activity class in the morning from April 23 to June 25, 2012. The observations were analyzed in chronological order according to the changes of theories and structure as presented by the children themselves. The process of scientific thinking in constructive play for young children can be divided into presentation of naive theories, the abandonment of naive theories according to repetitive experiences and the discovery of inconsistency, the representation of alternative theories, and the abandonment of alternative theories according to repetitive experiences and the discovery of contradictions. On the basis of the results, constructive play has proved to serve a valuable educational function by inducing scientific thinking processes in children. On the basis of this finding, the researcher suggests the need to provide appropriate educational support to teachers.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between young children's temperament, emotional regulation ability and mother's parenting sense of competence. Methods: The participants were comprised of 315 young children who attend a kindergarten or day care center and their mothers from Seoul, Inchon, and Gyeonggi-do Province. They completed questionnaires on temperament, emotion regulation ability, and parenting sense of competence. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: It was observed that young children's regularity/adaptability was positively correlated with sense of competence as a parent and young children's emotional regulation. Young children's regularity/adaptability was negatively correlated with dissatisfaction as a parent and young children's emotional instability/negativity. Sense of competence as a parent was positively correlated with young children's emotional regulation and negatively correlated with young children's emotional instability/negativity. In addition, it was further found that the mother's parenting sense of competence tended to play a perfectly/partially mediating role between young children's temperament and young children's emotional regulation ability respectively. Conclusion/Implications: These results clearly indicated that parenting sense of competence plays a crucial role between young children's temperament and emotional regulation.
This study analyzed the effects of dramatic play using Economic-fairy tales on young children's basic- economic understanding and the consumer behavior. The participants in this study were 42 young children who attended a kindergarten in G city. The mean age of participants was 70 months. The experimental group participated in 'Dramatic play using Economic-fairy tales' while the control group participated in a 'Discussion activity using Economic-fairy tales'. The experiment used 'The Basic-Economic Concept Test' and 'The Consumer Behavior Test' in the collection of data and T-test was used to statistically analyze the data. Significant differences were found between the experimental group and comparison group in both the post-test score of Basic-Economic Understanding and of Consumer Behavior NOTE. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that the technique of dramatic play using Economic-fairy tales which was developed in this study are probably effective in developing young children's basic-economic understanding and consumer behavior.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of shyness of 3 to 5-year-olds and the teacher-child relationship on peer play behaviors. For this purpose, a survey was conducted targeting 33 teachers working with 277 three to five-year-olds at child care centers located in Chungbuk, Korea. SPSS 19.0 was used to implement exploratory analyses and hierarchical regression analysis. It was found that children with low sociability and thoes with close relationships with teachers indicated the least play disruption. Children whose assertiveness and sociability were low and whose relationships with teachers were close were likely to do the most play interaction. However, regardless of the level of the lack of assertiveness and of the lack of sociability, children with close relationships with teachers had a higher level of play interaction. Children with a higher level of lack of sociability and in conflict relationships with teachers had a higher level of play disconnection. Findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the interplay of children's shyness and teacher-child relationships in the development of peer play behaviors.
The purpose of the study was to find the effect of play-using assertion training program on elementary school children's self-expression, interpersonal relationship and self-efficacy. For the purpose of the study, the researcher sets hypotheses as follows. Hypothesis I : The play-using assertion training program has significant effect in elementary school children's self-expression. Hypothesis II : The play-using assertion training program has significant effect on elementary school children's interpersonal relationship. Hypothesis III: The play-using assertion training program has significant effect on elementary school children's self-efficacy. To verify these hypotheses, the researcher selected 10 students of 4th grade in C elementary school as a experimental group, and 11 students of 4th grade in O elementary school as a controlled group. Both schools are located at Boryoung, Chungnam. In the experimental group, the researcher administered the play-using assertion training program once a week for ten weeks. The play-using assertion training program are made by the researcher based on Jeon(1985) and Byoun and Kim(1980). To measure self-expression, the scale of self-expression made by Byoun & Kim(1980) was used. To measure interpersonal relationship, the scale of relationship change made by Schlin and Guerney(1971) was used. The scale was translated by Lee and Moon(1980). To measure self-efficacy, the scale of self-efficacy made by Han(2002) was used. The scale is based on Kim and Cha(1996) and Kim(1997). The result of the study is that the play-using assertion training program gives positive effects on students' self-expression, especially in physical area. Second, the play-using assertion training program gives positive effects on students' interpersonal relationship, especially in satisfaction, communication and friendliness. Third, the play-using assertion training program generally does not give positive effects on students' self-efficacy, but give significant effects on confidence and self-control efficacy which are sub-areas of self-efficacy.

The purpose of this study was to compare communication and mother-child interactions of reactive attachment disordered children with normal children. The subjects were 24 children and their mothers participated in this study'12 reactive attachment disordered children and mothers, 12 normal children and mothers. The mother and her child were brought into a p]lay room and the mother was instructed to play with her child as she normally would at home. The play situations were videotaped. Tapes were transcribed and transcribed data was analyzed with 13 mutually exclusive categories encompassing pragmatic functions represented in communication form the early stage of multiword speech in childhood. The tapes were analyzed with 10 behavioral mother-child interaction patterns. As the statistical method, t-test and correlation was calculated. The results of this study were as follows : 1) Reactive attachment disordered children used significantly fewer 'filler', 'information', 'requests', 'describes' and 'disscus self'. 2) Reactive attachment disordered children's mother used significantly fewer 'filler' and 'names'. 3) Reactive attachment disordered children used significantly more 'independent play', fewer 'intiates interaction', 'responsiveness' and 'answer' Reactive attachment disordered children's mother used more 'control play', 'observe' and fewer 'initiates interaction'. 4) Children's communication patterns were related lo mother·'s communication and mother-child interaction types. Children's 'filler', 'information requests', 'describes' and 'disscus self' were consistantly related to mother's 'filler' and 'names', (Children's 'filler', 'information requests', 'describes'. 'disscus self' and mother-child's intiates interaction 'responsivness' were significantly positively correlationed and 'independant play', 'control play', 'observation' were significantly negatively correlationed. The results of reveal that communication and mother-child interaction pattern of reactive attachment disordered group was different from normal group and children's communication pattern were influenced by mother's communication and interaction patterns.
The purpose of this study is to elucidate how two young children understand force in rough-and-tumble play. For this purpose, a form of microanalysis(Forman, 2006) was used. They regarded black as the strongest color due to their daily experiences. They assumed that a structure made of black Lego-color-bricks would be strongest and made an experiment of beating it against blocks of other colors. Such repetitive behavior ultimately led them to realize that color had no correlation with strength. They also understood mechanical energy by which a boy's pushing power moves against an object. They tried to strike a bigger or protruding structure and understood that parts might be broken more easily by striking. This experience enabled the boys to realize the principle of resistance. That is to say, in the process of rough-and-tumble play, their misconceptions were gradually removed and they obtained scientific knowledge, including understanding of mechanical energy and the principle of resistance. This study found that two young children constructed knowledge together through the process of tool making and in contending for victory in rough-and-tumble play.
