To drive the high-image quality plasma displays of XGA and/or full-HD, we must effectively improve the driving waveform, which get the reset period for the stabilized control of wall charges, the address period to select discharge or non-discharge, and sustain period for luminance in 1 TV-frame, and also the display quality. To accomplish them, the development of the technology for the fast address discharge is required. In this paper, the correlation between the sustain-electrode gap and address discharge characteristics for the high-speed addressing was analyzed using the measurements of dynamic voltage margins. Results showed that the narrower the gap between the sustain electrodes, the narrower the with of the scan pulse became and a dynamic margin of data voltage of 29.2 V was obtained at scan pulse width of $1.0{\mu}s\;and\;V_{ramp}$ of 240 V for driving 4-inch test penal, which the gap between sustain electrodes was $65{\mu}m$.
A relationship between discharge delay time and the aging method were investigated: A-Y (Address electrode - Scan electrode) aging and conventional X-Y(Common electrode - Scan electrode) aging with the variation of sustain voltage beyond self-erasing discharge. Although A-Y aging decreases discharge delay time, it has several drawbacks like non-uniformity of discharge, degradation of luminous efficiency and a color temperature. In a conventional aging condition which is carried out near the mid-margin voltage, discharge delay time is short in low voltage and high frequency condition. As an alternative to conventional voltage aging, high voltage aging is suggested which is carried out at self-erasing sustain voltage region. High voltage aging shows lower discharge delay time and fast aging speed than conventional voltage aging.
We have developed a new PDP cell structure called MARI(Multi Anode for Reduction of Ionic effect) and new driving scheme achieving a high luminous efficacy. The MARI PDP has middle electrode inserted between X and Y main electrodes. In the MARI PDP, reset and scan voltage is applied to middle electrode and sustain voltage is applied to X and Y electrode. Using a long gap sustain discharge we accomplished a high luminous efficacy. And we developed 42"full panel adopting MARI structure and new driving scheme and attained luminous efficacy of 2.35 lm/W.

One of the most important issues in AC PDP is the improvement of luminous efficiency. One possible method for achieving this aim is by increasing Xe partial pressure in discharge gas mixture. The increase of Xe ratio, however, causes the driving voltage to rise, even if brightness is increased. In this study, a new electrode shape is proposed. A test panel fabricated by using a new electrode shows that efficacy has improved by 25 % and sustain voltage has decreased by 20 % compared with the conventional structure.
To improve the luminance and efficiency of AC PDP, the effects of a square pulse applied to the address electrode during a sustain-period is investigated. Through this experiment, we confirmed the improvement of luminance and efficiency. We performed the temporal behavior measurement for the light emitted from AC PDP at floating state of the address electrode and at various auxiliary voltages (including ground state) applied to the address electrode using the scanned point detecting system. In the case of using an auxiliary voltage pulse, emission starts at the inner edges of the anode and cathode simultaneously. Also, we obtained the larger two discharge volumes compared with the normal sustain discharge where address electrode is floated.

This paper proposes the new narrow erase method to erase wall charges formed in an AC plasma display panel (PDP) cell. In the proposed method, pulse timing of switch at the sustain period is adjusted for inducing, a weak discharge. Then, after the narrow erase, the voltage of the X electrode is set to differ from that of the Y electrode. For the proposed method, the measured maximum address voltage margin was 38.3V at Y_Rest voltage of 100V and sustain voltage of 180${\sim}$185V. However, for the conventional method, in which the X and Y electrodes are set to be of equal voltage after the narrow erase, the measured maximum address voltage margin was 31.3V at Y_Rest voltage of 150V and sustain voltage of 180V. This result shows that the measured maximum voltage margin for the proposed method is about 7V(22%) higher than that for the conventional method.
This paper proposes a real-time wall charge measurement circuit for three-electrode AC PDP. It includes a charge-compensation network, current-integrating capacitors, initializing switches, and an op-amp. With this equipment, we measure the wall charge variations for the effects of sustain voltage, sustain pulse width, sustain frequency, and neighboring cells.
We have developed a new PDP cell structure called MARI(${\underline{M}}ulti$${\underline{A}}node$ for ${\underline{R}}eduction$ of ${\underline{I}}onic$ effect) and new driving scheme achieving a high luminous efficacy. And we developed 42”full panel adopting MARI structure and new driving scheme and attained luminous efficacy of 2.35lm/W.

In this paper, we investigated effects of ITO electrode geometry and dielectric layer thickness on the discharge Characteristic of AC PDP. As the dielectric thickness is decreased ($30{\sim}12{\mu}m$), firing and sustain voltage is decreased. Luminance and discharge power increase with decreasing dielectric layer thickness because of increasing capacitance between plasma and electrodes. Reactive power decreases with dielectric thickness due to reduced capacitance between sustain electrodes. For the high Xe test panel with small ITO electrode, luminous efficacy as well as luminance increase with decreasing dielectric layer thickness. This result suggest that high power density and small plasma volume is beneficial for high efficacy discharge.

Breakdown voltage model and expertiments are compared for discharge cells of AC plasma display panel. In the model, discharge paths are assumed to be initial electric field lines and the one-dimensional continuity equation is applied to the charged particle transport at each field line. The comparisons are performed in the wide range of gas pressure (50-600torr), Xe partial pressure over total pressure (1-6%), sustain electrode gap(100-1000$\mu\textrm{m}$), wall height(130, 300$\mu\textrm{m}$), and voltage pulse width(2-6${\mu}$s). The presented breakdown voltage model well agree with experiments in the above wide range. The increase of breakdown voltage with the decrease of the width(L) of protruding electrode is also described by the model.
