In this experiment, Akiochi was studied especially on plant growth on the degraded soils. Besides, such soils were carefully examined on its character and plant body was analysed to know the difference in various mineral contents. For this purpose, paddy cultivation was done with the variety Pal Dal at Suwon, Sosa and Pyungtak. Three plots were chosen at each location as the normal and 2 levels of akiochi, a-the stronger and b-the weaker. Harvests from these 9 plots were measured agronomically and also chemically analysised. As for soil, after an observation on vertical section of soil, samples from each layer were also studied both physically and chemically. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Outer changes in rice plant and changes in yield components. 1) Rice from Akiochi soil showed remarkably shortened culm length, head length, protrusoion length, blade length of boot leaf, and coleoptile length, compared with that from the normal paddy field. 2) There was a tendency for Akiochi rice to have more heads per plant. 3) Akiochi rice showed poorer intercalary growth of upper 3 internodes. The ratio of this upper internode length to total culm length was also smaller in this case. Consquently the ratio of lower internode length to total culm length became larger than that from normal peddy field. 4) Akiochi rice showed significantly fewer first spikelets and attached grains of head at main stem. 5) Maturing rate of both this main seem of whole plant body was remarkably lower than that of normal rice. 6) Akiochi rice showed lower head weight of main stem, total hulled rice weight, total grain yield, 1000-grain weight, straw weight and straw-hulled rice ratio. 2. Physical and chemical study on soil. 1) Akiochi soil showed thinner upper layer and total thickness of upper and lower parts was smaller than that of normal. 2) Akiochi soil of Suwon was mainly composed of sand, while that of Sosa and Pyungtak was composed of heavy clay. 3) Chemical analysis indicated that content of $SiO_2$ in upper layer is always lower than that of normal. But no other common tendencies were found. 4) This analysis further lillustrates lower content of Fe, & Mn at Suwon ; of Mn at Sosa and higher content of Fe at Sosa and organic matters at Pyungtak. 5) Some differences in the content of N in each plot could be marked though irregular. 3. Chemical Composition of plant body. 1) Chemical analysis on grain, boot leaf and straw did not suggest any remarkable differences between normal and Akiochi rice, except that the latter contains less Si in boot leaf and less Mn in straw. 2) Contents of each chemical element were measured in grain and straw to calculate the percentage of element content in grain to that of whole plant body including both grain and straw. Here, Akiochi rice always showed lower value in N, K and Mn. 4. Relationship between chemical composition of plant body and that of soil. Akiochi soil at Sosa marked lower content of Mn. This caused another lower content of this element in grain, boot leaf and straw. But except that, no remarkable relationship could be found in this study.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of cerium (Ce), a rare earth, individually and in combination with lanthanium (La), a rare earth, in the basal diet on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, bone composition, breast meat composition, carcass characteristics and meat color in broiler chicks. A total of 1,600 day-old broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments with four replicates in a completely randomized block design. Treatments were T1) CON (control diet), T2) 100 ppm Ce, T3) 100 ppm La, T4) 100 ppm Ce+100 ppm La. There were no significant differences in feed intake among dietary treatments during the whole experimental period (0 to 5 weeks). Body weight gain for the first three weeks was greater in birds T4 than birds fed T3 diet. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was better in birds fed T4 diet (p<0.05) than birds fed T3 diet during 0~3 weeks, and better FCR for 0~5 weeks was noticed in birds fed T4 diet than birds fed T1 diet. Nutrient digestibility was greatest in birds fed T3 diet (p<0.05) compared with other treatments. Bone composition, carcass characteristics and meat color were no statistically different among the treatments. These results suggest that Ce supplementation, alone and combination with La could improve performance of broilers.

Lipid peroxidation is one of the main manifestations of oxidative damage and has been found to play an important role in the toxicity and carcinogenesis of many carcinogens. This study was carried out to determine the effects of vitamin C on lipid contents and fatty acid compositions of serum and liver in male rats treated with radiation or aflatoxin $B_1\;(AFB_1)$. Six week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 7 groups; control group, radiation exposed group, $AFB_1$ treated group, X-ray and $AFB_1$ co-treated group. Three groups, except control group, were each further divided into vitamin C administered group and not administered groups. For this study, vitamin C was injected with 10 mg/kg of body weight by intraperitoneal injection and 1 hr later, 0.4 mg/kg of $AFB_1$ was injected by the same method. These administrations were repeated every 3 days over a period of 15 days. Only one time, X-ray was irradiated on whole liver with 1,500 cGy. Then vitamin C and AFB1 were administered by the same level and same method described above. On the 16th day of treatments, the animals were sacrificed. From the analysis of the serum lipid patterns, significant decrease (p<0.01) in triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol levels were observed in X-ray and $AFB_1$ co treated group administered with vitamin C (group 7). In liver lipids, the levels of free cholesterol and total cholesterol were also decreased in X-ray and $AFB_1$ co treated group administered with vitamin C (group 7). The levels of serum free cholesterol and hepatic TG were not significantly different among all groups according to vitamin C administrations. The high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level of serum was significantly (p<0.01) increased while the low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol level was decreased in X-ray and $AFB_1$ co treated group administered with vitamin C (group 7). In the phospholipid fatty-acid compositions of serum and liver tissue, group 3, 5 and 7 showed an increase in polyunsaturated fatty-acid (PUFA) but a decrease in saturated fatty acid (SFA) when compared to the control group. The composition ratio of fatty acid varied according to vitamin C administration. These results suggested that vitamin C has partly suppressive effects on lipid contents and fatty acid composition of serum and liver in rats treated by radiation and $AFB_1$.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing a corn-soybean meal-based diet with an enzyme complex containing amylase, protease and xylanase on the performance, intestinal health, apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids and nutrient digestibility of weaned pigs. In Exp. 1, 108 piglets weaned at 28 d of age were fed one of three diets containing 0 (control), 100, or 150 ppm enzyme complex for 4 wks, based on a two-phase feeding program namely 1 to 7 d (phase 1) and 8 to 28 d (phase 2). At the end of the experiment, six pigs from the control group and the group supplemented with 150 ppm enzyme complex were chosen to collect digesta samples from intestine to measure viscosity and pH in the stomach, ileum, and cecum, as well as volatile fatty acid concentrations and composition of the microflora in the cecum and colon. There were linear increases (p<0.01) in weight gain, gain: feed ratio and digestibility of gross energy with the increasing dose rate of enzyme supplementation during the whole experiment. Supplementation with enzyme complex increased the digesta viscosity in the stomach (p<0.05) and significantly increased (p<0.01) the concentrations of acetic, propionic and butyric acid in the cecum and colon. Enzyme supplementation also significantly increased the population of Lactobacilli (p<0.01) in the cecum and decreased the population of E. coli (p<0.05) in the colon. In Exp. 2, six crossbred barrows (initial body weight: $18.26{\pm}1.21$ kg), fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum, were assigned to three dietary treatments according to a replicated $3{\times}3$ Latin Square design. The experimental diets were the same as the diets used in phase 2 in Exp. 1. Apparent ileal digestibility of isoleucine (p<0.01), valine (p<0.05) and aspartic acid (p<0.05) linearly increased with the increasing dose rate of enzyme supplementation. In conclusion, supplementation of the diet with an enzyme complex containing amylase, protease and xylanase improved piglet performance. This is likely a result of improvement in nutrient digestibility, volatile fatty acid concentrations and bacteria ratio in the large intestine.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate dry pellet on growth of juvenile Korean rockfish (sebastes schlegeli) by comparing with moist pellet and raw fish-based moist pellet. In the first experiment, three replicate groups of 40 fish averaging 4.7 g were fed one of the following three experimental diets for 11 weeks : d교 pellet (DP) and moist pellet (MP) diets containing $56\%$ white fish meal (WFM) + $3\%$ soybean meal (SM) + $5\%$ corn gluten meal (CGM) as protein sources, or raw fish-based moist pellet (RMP, $50\%$ frozen horse mackerel+$50\%$ commercial fish feed). No significant differences were found among fish fed different pellet types of diets in daily weight gain and whole body composition (P>0.05). In the second experiment, two replicate groups of 140 fish averaging 10.9 g were fed one of the following three experimental diets for 8 weeks : DP and MP diets containing $38\%$ WFM+$15\%$ SM+$10\%$ CGM as protein sources, or RMP. Daily weight gain and feed efficiency from fish fed RMP were significantly (P>0.05) higher than those from fish fed DP diet. These different growth responses between two experiments may be due to dietary protein sources and nutrient content. findings showed that DP can be used as a practical diet for juvenile Korean rockfish.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of spirulina (SPI) and asthaxanthin (AST) on growth performance and antioxidant activity in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in low temperature season. Total 180 fish ($27.8{\pm}0.3g$, average weight ${\pm}S.D.$) were randomly divided into 12 groups, and 3 groups were fed one of four isonitrogenous (52% CP) and isocaloric $(18.3\;MJ\;kg^{-1})$ diets containing no SPI and AST, 0.5% SPI, 0.5% AST, and 0.5% each SPI and AST (designated by diets Control, SPI, AST and SPI+AST, respectively). After 6 weeks of feeding trial, the growth performance, feed utilization, whole body composition and survival of fish were not significantly affected by the experimental diets. There were no significant differences in hematocrit, hemoglobin, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase of fish fed all the experimental diets. The DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay indicated numerically increased antioxidant activity in liver of fish fed the SPI diet compared to that of fish fed the control diet, even though it was not significant. The present study shows that a low level (0.5%) of dietary supplementation of SPI and/or AST does not affect growth and feed utilization and intake of juvenile olive flounder in low temperature season.
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in nutritive quality of fermented wheat bran prepared by culturing with a microorganism, Aspergillus oryzae, in an attempt to improve the quality of protein in feedstuff. After incubation of wheat bran with Aspergillus oryzae, the contents of chemical composition, including amino acids, riboflavin and amino-nitrogen were increased, but the level of nitrogen free extract was reduced. The effects of supplementation of fermented wheat bran on the rat diets were evaluated by measuring growth rate, feed efficiency and biological values, such as NPU, PER and NPR. Sixty four male Sprague Dawley rats of 5-6 weeks of age were adopted for the feeding trial for 10 days period, and levels of dietary protein were set at 10%. The %contribution of protein from casein, wheat bran and fermented wheat bran for the other dietary treatments were, in the order, 50-50-0%, 50-30-20%, 50-20-30% and 50-0-50%, respectively. In the result of this study, no significant difference were observed in the amount of feed intake body weight gain and feed efficiency. On the whole, the values of NPU, PER and NPR of all the fermented wheat bran groups appeared to be higher than those of the group whose half of the protein was from wheat bran.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the utilization of various types of fish meal as dietary protein sources in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). In the first experiment, averaging 5.7 g fish were divided into two groups and fed one of diets containing $55\%$ steam-dried white fish meal (SWFM) or $55\%$ brown fish meal (BFM) for 45 days. Weight gain and feed efficiency from fish fed SWFM were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those from fish fed BFM diet. However, daily feed intake, protein retention and lipid retention were not influenced by the two different diets. In the second experiment, averaging 86.6 g fish were divided into six groups and fed one of diets containing $56\%$ SWFM, $28\%\;SWFM+31\%$ flame-dried white fish meal (FWFM), $62\%\;FWFM,\;28\%\;SWFM+31\%\;BFM,\;56\%\;BFM$, or $28\%\;SWFM+29\%$ hydrolyzed fish protein (HFP) for 21 weeks. No significant differences were found among fish fed the six different diets in weight gain, feed efficiency, condition factor, whole body composition, and relative liver weight. Results of the present studies indicated that fish size should be considered in selecting feed ingredients and also feed cost could be lowered by replacing SWFM with FWFM or BFM in growing Korean rockfish diet.

The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of dietary fermented by-product of mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, (FBPM) as a fish meal (FM) replacer in juvenile Amur catfish, Silurus asotus. A total number of 225 fish averaging $5.7{\pm}0.1g$ ($mean{\pm}standard$ deviation) were fed one of the five experimental diets formulated to replace FM with FBPM at 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% ($FBPM_0$, $FBPM_5$, $FBPM_{10}$, $FBPM_{20}$, and $FBPM_{30}$, respectively). At the end of eight weeks of the experiment, average weight gain (WG) of fish fed $FBPM_0$ or $FBPM_5$ were significantly higher than those of fish fed $FBPM_{20}$ or $FBPM_{30}$ diets (p<0.05). However, there was no significant differences in WG among the fish fed $FBPM_0$, $FBPM_5$ or $FBPM_{10}$, and between fish fed $FBPM_{10}$ or $FBPM_{20}$, and also between those fed $FBPM_{20}$ or $FBPM_{30}$ diets. Lysozyme activity of fish fed $FBPM_0$ or $FBPM_5$ were significantly higher than those of fish fed $FBPM_{10}$, $FBPM_{20}$ or $FBPM_{30}$ diets (p<0.05). The chemiluminescent response of fish fed $FBPM_5$ was significantly higher than those of fish fed $FBPM_0$, $FBPM_{20}$ or $FBPM_{30}$ diets (p<0.05). Broken line regression analysis of WG suggested that the maximal dietary inclusion level for FBPM as a FM replacer could be 6.3% without any adverse effects on whole body composition and on serological characteristics. Therefore, these results may indicate that the maximal dietary inclusion level of FBPM as a FM replacer could be 6.3% in juvenile Amur catfish.
In this study, we investigated the changes in the physiological and histological traits of a sea squirt (Halocynthia roretzi) with the emergence of the soft tunic syndrome induced by the water temperature control (6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 and $27^{\circ}C$). It was observed that the induction rate of the soft tunic syndrome was highest at $15^{\circ}C$, but lowest at $24^{\circ}C$. Based on the tunic color condition and contraction strength, the whole process were classified into 4 stages as S0, S1, S2 and S3. Interestingly, there were significant differences in oxygen consumption and filtration rate were observed during S0-S3. The most distinctive aspects were change of blood cell composition at stage S3, whereas multi-vacuole cell ratio was decreased by 1/2 and morula cell ratio expanded about 10 times during S0-S3. Further, change of organ structure started following the syndrome such as degeneration of epithelial cells, microfilaments, increment in hemocytes and damage in muscle fiber have been detected in tunic, siphon, branchial sac, body wall musculature and pyloric gland. Briefly, our study results indicated that the normal physiological functions of the sea squirt can be affected due to the soft tunic syndrome induced by water temperature.
