  • Probability density or its derivatives may have a discontinuity/change point at an unknown location. We propose a method of estimating the location and the jump size of the discontinuity point based on kernel type density or density derivatives estimators with one-sided equivalent kernels. The rates of convergence of the proposed estimators are derived, and the finite-sample performances of the methods are illustrated by simulated examples.

  • In this paper, we give a sufficient condition for convergence in probability of weighted sums of convex-compactly uniformly integrable fuzzy random variables. As a result, we obtain weak law of large numbers for weighted sums of convexly tight fuzzy random variables.

  • Convergence to a steady state in the long term limit is established for global weak solutions to a chemotaxis model with degenerate local sensing and consumption, when the motility function is C1-smooth on [0, ∞), vanishes at zero, and is positive on (0, ∞). A condition excluding that the large time limit is spatially homogeneous is also provided. These results extend previous ones derived for motility functions vanishing algebraically at zero and rely on a completely different approach.

  • We consider to obtain an estimate of bivariate survival function for the right censored data with the assumption that the two components of censoring vector are independent. The estimate is derived from an ad hoc approach based on the representation of survival function. Then the resulting estimate can be considered as an extension of the Susarla- Van Ryzin estimate to the bivariate data. Also we show the consistency and weak convergence for the proposed estimate. Finally we compare our estimate with Dabrowska's estimate with an example and discuss some properties of our estimate with brief comment on the extension to the multivariate case.

  • In this paper, the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of a flexible structure is investigated. Any mechanically flexible structure is inherently distributed parameter in nature, so that its dynamics are described by a partial, rather than ordinary, differential equation. The MRAC problem is formulated as an initial value problem of coupled partial and ordinary differential equations in weak form. The well-posedness of the initial value problem is proved. The control law is derived by using the Lyapunov redesign method on an infinite dimensional filbert space. Uniform asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is established, and asymptotic tracking, i. e., convergence of the state-error to zero, is obtained. With an additional persistence of excitation condition for the reference model, parameter-error convergence to zero is also shown. Numerical simulations are provided.

  • We prove an empirical LIL for the Kaplan-Meier integral process constructed from the random censorship model under bracketing entropy and mild assumptions due to censoring effects. The main method in deriving the empirical LIL is to use a weak convergence result of the sequential Kaplan-Meier integral process whose proofs appear in Bae and Kim [2]. Using the result of weak convergence, we translate the problem of the Kaplan Meier integral process into that of a Gaussian process. Finally we derive the result using an empirical LIL for the Gaussian process of Pisier [6] via a method adapted from Ossiander [5]. The result of this paper extends the empirical LIL for IID random variables to that of a random censorship model.

  • We introduce two iterative algorithms for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of an asymptotically k-strict pseudo-contraction and the set of solutions of a mixed equilibrium problem in a Hilbert space. We obtain some weak and strong convergence theorems by using the proposed iterative algorithms. Our results extend and improve the corresponding results of Tada and Takahashi [16] and Kim and Xu [8, 9].

  • Let E be a uniformly convex Banach space with a uniformly $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differentiable norm, C a nonempty closed convex subset of E, and $T\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;E$ a nonexpansive mapping satisfying the weak inwardness condition. Assume that every weakly compact convex subset of E has the fixed point property. For $f\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;C$ a contraction and $t\;{\in}\;(0,\;1)$, let $x_t$ be a unique fixed point of a contraction $T_t\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;E$, defined by $T_tx\;=\;tf(x)\;+\;(1\;-\;t)Tx$, $x\;{\in}\;C$. It is proved that if {$x_t$} is bounded, then $x_t$ converges to a fixed point of T, which is the unique solution of certain variational inequality. Moreover, the strong convergence of other implicit and explicit iterative schemes involving the sunny nonexpansive retraction is also given in a reflexive and strictly convex Banach space with a uniformly $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differentiable norm.

  • Let E be a real q-uniformly smooth Banach space which admits a weakly sequentially continuous duality map, and K a nonempty closed convex subset of E. Let T : K -> K be a mapping such that $F(T)\;=\;{x\;{\in}\;K\;:\;Tx\;=\;x}\;{\neq}\;0$ and (I - T) satisfies the accretive-type condition: $\;{\geq}\;{\lambda}$\mid$$\mid$x-Tx$\mid$$\mid$^2$, for all $x\;{\in}\;K,\;x^*\;{\in}\;F(T)$ and for some ${\lambda}\;>\;0$. The weak and strong convergence of the Ishikawa iteration method to a fixed point of T are investigated. An application of our results to the approximation of a solution of a certain linear operator equation is also given. Our results extend several important known results from the Mann iteration method to the Ishikawa iteration method. In particular, our results resolve in the affirmative an open problem posed by Naimpally and Singh (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 96 (1983), 437-446).
